Up in Smoke: 52% of Californian adults want to legalize marijuana

The new Public Policy Institute of California poll found that Democrats and Independents favor making pot legal in the state, while Republicans want to keep the laws as they are.

Support for the legalization of marijuana has never been so high in the Golden State.

Fifty-two percent of adults surveyed by the Public Policy Institute of California said they thought marijuana should be made legal in the state, a new record level since the group began polling residents.

The pro-pot sentiment was especially robust among Democrats, who favor legalization by a margin of 64% to 33%. Independents give legalization the green light by a margin of 60% to 36%. California Republicans, on the other hand, would prefer to keep the drug from becoming a legal commodity, with just 45% saying they would legalize it and 53% opposing doing so.

Mirroring nationwide trends, a clear majority of Californians said that the U.S. Department of Justice should not enforce federal marijuana laws in states that have voted to legalize its use for either medicinal or recreational purposes. Of those surveyed, 61% of adults and 68% of likely voters said that Uncle Sam should let state marijuana laws stand, even if they are in conflict with the federal prohibition.

While just two U.S. states — Washington and Colorado — have passed measures legalizing the recreational use of marijuana for adults, several more, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont could soon follow suit.

A national poll taken this spring by the Pew Research Center found that, for the first time in history, a majority of Americans now favors the outright legalization of marijuana.

Seems like the republicans are infinitely more interested in spending the country down the drain with military and other spending while trying to subjugate people in foreign lands.

Right wing socialism/fascism or left wing fascism/socialism. But if I did not have my weed then my intake of pharmaceuticals would triple within 24 hours. Some choices huh?

I hate the divisive wording of this article.

"Democrats" are not for it! "Republicans" are not against it!!!

Another airhead who can't

Another airhead who can't read, face facts, do the right thing etc.

Funny really.

I know democrats who oppose

legalization and I know registered Republicans who are for legalization. I would venture to say that most people here either are or are former Republicans and a majority of them support legalization.

So the blanket statement that Democrats and Independents are for it and Republicans are against it is false.

Airhead? Makes you look like the pot who called the kettle black. You can't even comprehend your own post.

I wish the same 52% would DEMAND to reinstate the Constitution!

P.S.

P.S.
I don't care who smokes or eats or drinks what, when, why or... whatever.

It's just mind boggling for me that people in the 21st century - the "Google age" you know! - keep striking at the branches of the evil that took their freedoms away, and not at the roots of the same evil.

And tiring.

How is it not higher than that?

When I lived in CT last, there was a Quinnipiac poll saying that 79% of CT wanted marijuana legalized.

Don't most of these polls

only survey people with landlines? Younger people generally use cell phones exclusively so that could have skewed the results.
