WASHINGTON — Republicans rallied around a budget plan Saturday to keep the government open but delay the new health care law for a year, storming toward a showdown with Democrats that looked increasingly likely to shut down the government when the current fiscal year ends Monday night.

Republicans in the House of Representatives showed unusual unity Saturday in endorsing the plan, then took it to the full House for expected approval. Their proposal would keep the government funded through Dec. 15, delay the health care law, permanently repeal a 2.3 percent medical device tax that helps fund the health care plan and assure military personnel would be paid if the government shuts down.

The Senate is not scheduled to return to session until Monday afternoon, 10 hours before the fiscal year ends. Democrats who control the Senate said they wouldn’t negotiate or consider the House proposal, leaving no apparent path to compromise on either side in the waning hours before money runs out for many parts of the government not on automatic spending such as Social Security or considered essential such as the military.

Well, I saw mail deliveries today,

But it seems all the National Forest ranger division numbers I tried around here are out of service. I tried about 7 or 8 numbers. Not even a message. Just "disconnected or no longer in service."

What is the reasoning behind closing the Lincoln Memorial?

Over here in the UK they keep showing interviews with disgruntled tourists on TV, but why completely close it down and upset all those people who may never get the chance to see it up close again?

If the Memorial is normally open 24hrs a day but only staffed from 8:00am until midnight, that means it is open even when there are no staff for 8 hrs out of every 24.

I wonder why they spent all that money on barricades, specially printed signs and security personnel?

Why not leave it with the same access as they do when it is not staffed from midnight until 8:00am?

Although, it makes a great show for the media, don't you think?

Am I missing something?

It's made headlines abroad. That's why.

The more this is covered around the world, the more it will scare people who do business with the U.S. Could it be that that's connected to some goal? I agree with Jill Booth's comment above. There is way more to this orchestrated plan than meets the eye.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

To be fair

Some wacko did recently spray paint on the Lincoln Memorial to try to deface it as well as some places elsewhere in DC.

But they are paying security to patrol it anyway, despite the "shutdown".

Because no services are

Because no services are really shutting down, they are just doing a show for political gain. There is no "government shut down," it's a myth and only highly public things will be affected, because the ONLY reason they're doing it at all is for political gain.

'cause he's a war criminal

and the monument has to be protected from vandals

I can only hope there is no compromise

and the government shutdown drags on for a long time....forever.

This will be one great way to deal with the budget cuts... shut the over bloated bureaucracies.

Shut down big government (beast) shut down...shut down forever.

I guess I'll call my congressman and congratulate him for staying the high ground, and urging them to keep it shut down.

update: Called my Congressman's office

The recording indicates that staffers are not there to answer the phone, due to gov shutdown. please leave a message & they will continue to check them.

The recording also suggests that people call harry reids office and ask him to negotiate.

I left a message thanking my congressman for doing the right thing, no matter how long it takes.

I hope you will take time to thank your legislator for doing the right thing. Let then know we support them.

Something smells really bad!

Just like the shutdowns of the ME embassies.
Now would be a good time to DEMAND control of your government back, after all they have bankrupted it..it BELONGS to you.
Your National Parks BELONG to YOU, they are yours to use and enjoy as you wish...the "government" has no right to close them down, or will the UN now tuck them under its collective wing and take control?
This "shutdown" seems to be more of a backroom deal to me, and I am deeply suspicious of it.

Human Nature

In the event that the parks our "finally ours" who the hell is going to take on the responsibility of keeping those places not only safe for people to visit, but clean of all the inevitable trash that we as an American society seems to plague the world with.

It's hard not to believe that a majority of people have the "someone else will do it" attitude and I think if we allow places like these to not be ran by a Gov't agency, they will go to shit.

The only option is to make it a Free Market alternative where parks now become a business model and no longer free. The cost of enjoying them would ensure that they are clean, safe and devoid of disruptions to the natural ecosystem.

Probably a much more efficient model, but I'll take Parks and Recreation still, for now.

President or not, the Revolution is happening and it grows at the local level.

You should be on the ballot for your local Republican Central Committee.

The parks are not "free".

Our tax dollars pay for them. Competitive bidding by private contractors would cost less as you say, so why would you want the government to continue to run them?

who needs these parks anyway ?

There's a lot of vast wide open spaces out there for everyone to enjoy.
I would rather go out and enjoy the solitude than go to one of these places any day.

Do we really need some smelly goverment maintained toilet when we go out in to nature...or just common sense. don't poop in the streams.
bury it.

The question you asked has a dark answer.

Neglected parks will be deemed "Underutilized" by Local Authorities, so they will be sold off at fire sale prices to (most likely non contested)"developers" for 21st century Pack 'em Stack 'em Residential Communities, as per UN Agenda 21.
These dog kennel "apartments" will come with all the "Smart" technology and will spy on your every move, "smart" meters will track your consumption of electricity and water usage. If you use more than what your local Gestapo deems fit, you will be charged accordingly. You will be penalized for having a car, all transport will be "provided" for you, you will be herded to your destination...or not.
Please read the following piece titled Your Money=Developers Profits.
It is eye watering!

I like that you question things....but

very few people have their house in a national park.

I don't live there, and I think it is a waste of tax payer money to pay park service people to maintain them.

Look around there is a lot of nature... wide open space... Thats where I'll be 'if and when' they try forcing people to live in Agenda 21 communities.

Sorry, I"ll clear that up.

I didn't mean Yellowstone type parks, I meant the parks and green spaces in cities.

The answer to your questions, is in your subject title.

Ill just leave this right here:

The stock market doesn't seem to care

At least not yet:

It is trying to act all nonchalant. I bet it panics right at 3:30 though.

Gold on the other hand - that's another story. Big gap down today. Ugly.

He's the man.

Gold dropping is GOOD.

It means the market thinks the government might actually start to tighten its belt in the long term and thus reduce inflation.

It's only a small change compared to the last couple years of runup, though. I bought in at $930 or so and it's still around $1250.

Loved the "ending remarks"

Obama said "Thank you" and immediately someone asked "Mr. President (sic) if you won't negotiate, how can you get a solution?"

Hopefully that woke up the people that his droning had put to sleep.

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

Absolutely everything

you need to know about how the government shutdown will work:

"It’s not pessimistic, brother, because this is the blues. We are blues people. The blues aren’t pessimistic. We’re prisoners of hope but we tell the truth and the truth is dark. That’s different." ~CW

Why are democrats so petrified of and embarassed by a brief

government shutdown, but seemingly unapologetic and unembarassed by a 17 trillion dollar debt?

I would be embarassed to have to tell someone, "Hey, I only make X per year, but I have run up this huge debt of Y that I can never hope to pay." I would feel an embarassment and fear that people would believe that something was wrong with me. i would fear that people would see me as immature or irresponsible at the very least, and maybe even mentally unstable or manic depressive (many manic depressives run up unpayable debts during the manic stage). If in the next breath, I mentioned to that very someone that I was about to buy a very expensive shiney brand new vehicle (Obamacare), the I would most certainly expect them to consider me ill.

Why the lack of shame or self awarness by these seemingly rational and intellegent people?

Because power corrupts if you don't have a solid moral core,

(as Ron Paul did) and they have been corrupted .

Yawn again...

It's laughable how the

It's laughable how the democrats parrot the same words as those Republicans have been trying to tell us for months. The stand off is real...but the shutdown is not real enough! They stand to gain a lot of revenue with lay off of non-essential workers. The (Democrats) refuse to tackle items singularly. They only want the whole package (whatever is buried in there) accepted first then discussed. Get real REID. Who could possibly believe you or Obama. Your words have no value. I don't trust the Republican either but I feel they are playing "the political game" with more finesse. The democrat regime is an embarrassment to themselves...The more they fling the vitriolic insults, tantrums, whining at individual republicans for doing their job as elected the more it detracts from any Democrat credibility under Obama's regime. Their intransigence to non-negotiate Obamacare is nothing more than an ego trip regardless of all the backlash, complaints, problems, inequities surrounding this highly controversial and flawed law.

I awoke and found that

I awoke and found that nothing has changed. Wtf? I thought there was going to be chaos.

The NSA needs to shut down as they are clearly non-essential.

Throw in the BATF***s and a few others no one cares or knows about.

I put my country first.

Thats why I think this shutdown is outrageous. The Congress barely does anything as it is. Now they are leaving those with whom they made a social contract with out to dry. The bottom line is that I have to continue hoping a plausible third party candidate will gain steam. This is completely irresponsible and sends a message around the world that we are in a weakened state. This should be a last resort when the president has truly lost his mind and tries to usurp the Congress; not an argument over healthcare coverage. You'd think they would have shutdown over:

NSA Scandal
Iraq war scandal
Gulf of Tonkin scandal

No, And it was the NSA that told the public the Gulf of Tonkin incident was fabricated by LBJ. So some decent people were at the wheel at that point. Both parties are going to pay a heavy price for leaving millions of Americans out to dry. I don't want to hear any fairy tales about how this is libertarian utopia right now. Ron Paul called for a transition - this is not a transition it is just reckless and crying over spilled milk.

so what?
"This is completely irresponsible and sends a message around the world that we are in a weakened state."

What do you mean you put your country first? You put me first?- Thanks I guess.
