WASHINGTON — Republicans rallied around a budget plan Saturday to keep the government open but delay the new health care law for a year, storming toward a showdown with Democrats that looked increasingly likely to shut down the government when the current fiscal year ends Monday night.

Republicans in the House of Representatives showed unusual unity Saturday in endorsing the plan, then took it to the full House for expected approval. Their proposal would keep the government funded through Dec. 15, delay the health care law, permanently repeal a 2.3 percent medical device tax that helps fund the health care plan and assure military personnel would be paid if the government shuts down.

The Senate is not scheduled to return to session until Monday afternoon, 10 hours before the fiscal year ends. Democrats who control the Senate said they wouldn’t negotiate or consider the House proposal, leaving no apparent path to compromise on either side in the waning hours before money runs out for many parts of the government not on automatic spending such as Social Security or considered essential such as the military.

I understand your

I understand your frustration. But unfortunately, the "transitions" that Dr. Paul wanted I don't believe can be achieved now because of the reckless behaviors of Congress and the Federal Reserve. There just is too much corruption. I certainly didn't want a dollar collapse but that is what we are heading towards very quickly. My thoughts are that the the Keynesians and neocons couldn't get their major war (at least not yet) to "fix the economy" and they won't be able to avert disaster. The Federal Reserve has already shown it's hand. I mean just the talk of a taper causes the markets to go crazy. And then they lie about tapering just to keep the markets sort of "stable" then continue to print money. We're at the cliff's edge now. I believe what is going on is a show to put the blame on something else when the collapse comes. We already know Obama's folks in the Dept. of Agriculture were telling an official in one state (NC or SC I believe....correct me if you remember the state) to make sure the cuts caused the most pain. They obviously have no intentions of taking care of the veterans which is a SAD state of affairs. They probably can't wait to cut welfare so those people "rise up" for their socialism goodies because they believe they are "entitled to them" for some odd reason. Ron Paul said that if things didn't change drastically years ago (a transition that would be painful), it would end very badly. Unfortunately, I believe it's going to end badly. Unfortunately, we have to go through this though for our posterity's sakes. Hopefully, people will ask the real reasons why it happened so they can enjoy freedom again.

Social contract? Which

Social contract? Which enumerated power is the federal government utilizing to fulfill its end of the bargain that is not reserved to the states or the people? Illegal contracts are void.

There are many reasons to shut the government down. I'm not convinced there are enough people in congress who care about the constitution that it is being shut down for my preferred reasons. The shut down tool actually being used tells me there's still some potential voters not dependent on federal this/that. For now. I wonder if a shut down will be possible 10-20 years from now.

Why are you panicking anyway?

The rest of the world

is starting to see our country as a failed experiment. Because of the HMOs, do your homework and you will find who established them. Richard Nixon. Go back and find out how the AMA found a way to charge $10,000-$20,000 for a MRI. It sends the wrong message to everyone - the uninformed, the apathetic, and those who had synergy at a grassroots level to change politics. It damages the Republican Party by shutting down. Its not a badge of honor. Yes, the US is obligated to continue medicare payments for the poor and elderly. It is obligated to send those social security checks because it promised to do so. The government must be accountable to the people and the rule of law. The opt-out option for everything, which Ron Paul proposed, was the right idea. Give the next generation a chance. Ours has successfully doomed this nation.

sorry double post

Odd how I just hit the button once.

One arm of the government didn't shut down and is Reporting

how angry and afraid Americans are that the government did shut down. It's the propaganda arm of government known as main stream media. And we will hear every sob story they can find and every poll they can rig until the government "does what the people want" and come together to rape us some more.

This is the first thing I saw when I logged on.

We have work to do now!

Go to the main stream media sites and make sure to post how the MSM is a propaganda device. Support the people in govt. who are holding the line on Obamacare funding to be strong with phone calls. Call those trying to fund Obamacare and chastise them for not following the will of the people or the constitution.

Now is the time to be active.

I just have this gut feeling it is all show. They are all good actors.(Like WWF or WWE wrestling)They know what they are going to do.I do not trust them at all, they have failed at everything. All of them should go home without pay.

They should just actually

They should just actually shut down indefinitely. I'd be fine with that.

ok can somebody explain what

ok can somebody explain what happened exactly. the government shutdown...but we still pay all the taxes, the cops still work, the fbi CIA NSA all still work. COngress goes home and gets paid for it. IS that about right? I dont have the time this morning to read through everything i gotta go to work

Some federal employees get a

Some federal employees get a paid vacation. And national monuments are closed.

The Government Shutdown.....

...... will be short lived and is just a dress rehearsal for the debt ceiling showdown. Failure of Congress and the White House to make a deal on the debt ceiling does not mean default. More likely it means the economy relapses back into recession.

Nominal US GDP is growing at an annual rate of about 2.5%. US federal spending currently weighs in at roughly 23% of GDP, in contrast to the historical average of 19.6% from 1946 to 2008. If the debt ceiling is not raised, the government will have no choice but to go COLD TURKEY to a balanced budget by cutting 18 cents out of every dollar it currently spends. Sudden elimination of 18% of the federal budget would bring US federal spending down to roughly 19% of GDP and by extension cut the annual GDP growth rate from a positive +2.5% to a negative -1.5% in a New York minute.

The only way this scenario could avoid triggering another recession would be if private sector credit expanded enough to fill the vacuum and make up the difference. The question is whether the private sector in aggregate has de-leveraged enough since 2008 to make private sector businesses and households feel comfortable enough to go out on a borrowing spree.

After following all the Cspan

After following all the Cspan debates, speeches and positions and because my mind now operates on a different level of consciousness (or paranoia)...I have leary thoughts that this was indeed a planned shutdown and the Republicans are the target to take the blame. Pelosi is a Bad Actress...and Reid is an intransigent Neanderthal. This whole endeavour is so Chicago and so Obama. The democratic regime will save scads of money with non-essential worker lay offs.It is too unreasonable that any congressperson would again accept holus bolus any bill before the fact based on Obama's word. REALLY! How stupid do we all have to be? In the aftermath of Obamacare analysis..and with all the complaints, problems and inaccuries surrounding this Bill...what has Reid or the Democrats done to make it "better". Nothing! I'm not sure where Boehner really stands on all this but the political opening to go after the Bill was there due to democrats amateurish incompetence and bullying to demand their way and then claim to be victims ("hostages") of Republican manoevering with insults, whining and tantrums. This WH REGIME must go!What an embarrassment they are to themselves.

Gonna rock out to some

Is it April 15th??

I don't want to send my check to an empty office.

Besides that who will deliver the check?

How will they get it there without constant road maintenance?

What if I'm too ill to write out the check and can't afford insurance?

And it is still too hot outside with all the global warming.

I would deliver it myself except for all the uneducated, starving, sick, and unregulated children on the streets.

Please, help me Government.

Wait a minute! This 100 dollars now buys 400 dollars worth of stuff.

Without government I have twice the money and vendors can offer goods at 1/2 off without their taxes and regulations.

There is no good to shutting down

It's not a real shutdown.

Under Republican control, from 2000-2008, the United States doubled the national debt. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security also saw the largest expansion of the federal government since the New Deal.

Under Democrat control, from 2008 to 2013, the United States doubled the national debt.

Two sides of the same coin. I'll give you a Republican House, a Republican Senate, a Republican President, and a conservative judiciary. You will get George Bush v2.0.

Similarly, I'll give you a Democrat House, a Democrat Senate, a Democrat President, and a liberal judiciary. You'll get Obama 2.0.

If the government is "shut down", 800,000 federal employees will go on furlough, but many areas of government will continue, including attacks on Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other Middle Eastern countries. Only the poor will suffer who are on disability or need to get federal aid. The credit rating of the United States will begin to suffer again.

As far as "consequences" from the Affordable Healthcare Act, there are none. No part of the law other than the existing preconditions clause has been put in place.

Delaying its implementation for a year is stupid, since it needs to be implemented incrementally. This means one step at a time. This is a large overhaul. Whether or not the bill can be afforded by the people is undecided, since its implementation is not complete. Any other statement is simply subjective and not factual. If no one can afford it, no one will use it.

People will never be treated like "Congress" with their exemption, because Congressman are corrupt multi-millionaires and 90% of the rest of the population aren't. Multi-millionaires do not need comprehensive health insurance coverage. They may want it, but they do not need it. They provide it to their employees, through their corporations, because they were required to under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. If more people work less hours for more money, this may actually be good for purchasing power, and would be the free market working around a government imposed problem.

On face value, whether or right or wrong, shutting down the government is pure politics. The political analysts on both sides have likely looked at the risks. The Democrats will see a small uptick in popularity during this time period, and the Republicans will rally their base, but lose some populist support. Members of Congress talking about special interest groups being exempt from the law are total hypocrites. They are being funded almost directly by the AMA and other healthcare lobbies. The long term impact of the shutdown could be disastrous for the working poor, far more than the Affordable Healthcare Act.

There are no proposals about working across the aisle. There are no discussions about bargaining. This is a false argument. The only goal of the House Republicans has been to defund the entire law to force the Senate's hand, which is never going to happen.

These are mostly the facts, like it or not. Two arms of the same body, two sides of the same coin, two appendages of the same creature.

Man, why not give it a rest. You are wasting your time.

Try these simple minded "arguments" on your simple minded collegues in the "gime gime gimee" party.

"Gimme" a break

While you continue to toe the Republican Party line you fail to realise I'm a registered independent. Also, if you want the government to act like a business, it wouldn't shut down all non-essential operations when its board of directors is in a gridlock. Considering the United States has the largest economy in the world, perhaps you can imagine a world watching this country plunge into mayhem, instead of reiterating the talking points of the minority leadership. If this government were a business today, there would be a fire sale on its stock by institutional investors, primary because the shareholders would lose confidence that such a large corporation had suspended most of its operations. Any rational investor would conclude it was unable to carry out its duties due to mismanagement.

Mismanagement for 100 years at least

IF you think the mismanagement began at midnight, you are sadly mistaken.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. usually swoops in at the end of the business day Friday to seize a bank.

What happened to irresponsible Detroit? An Emergency Financial Manager is appointed over the objections of city officials.

What happens when a federal government proves over 100 years that it is reckless and irresponsible? You shut that mother down! And you keep it shut down until the entitled, cowardly so called "representatives of the people" regain their senses.

I would agree with you on most points

But it is important to remember that these programs were set up for well intentioned and good reasons during the time that they were set up. Most of what is suspended under the "shutdown" is 90% of what Americans consider social programs, i.e. the New Deal. I never agreed for the government to spend trillions of dollars when it was at or near budget surplus to go on a spending spree militarizing the police force of every county in this country after 9/11 or set up a crazy bureaucracy to monitor everyones phone calls and I don't think you did either. And I never authorized the social security trust fund to be raided and I don't think you did either.

At the end of the day (week, or month), the end result is that a lot of elderly people won't get their social security payments. A lot of poor people who are stuck, unable to opt-out of the system, which is a brilliant idea I might add, may be unable to buy food to feed their children.

There is an underclass in our society and it didn't start during the depression or after these laws were passed, but politicians did exploit these laws, or "social safety net" to line their own pockets. Large banks, health insurance lobbies, and even the unions are hedging their bets on which way this law will go.

But ultimately I do not think it is appropriate to shut down the government at this time, especially when we lost triple A credit rating and instead banned the credit rating agency. The entire world still recognizes Standard & Poor's and so does everyone in the entire country except for the Treasury Dept and the Federal Reserve. So with that being said, we are also supposed to be on some "war on terror". Now I never agreed with the idea of going to war with a verb or adjective either, but anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 soldiers are stationed in the assh*le of the earth in Afghanistan, and what kind of signal are we sending to them that the entire government is being shut down for political purposes.

We should bring them back as soon as possible.

I suppose I'm an "idealist"; well I would count my ideas as among the sane ones. Like pass a budget before you deal with a disagreement with healthcare, and start reducing the deficit by ending the empire building at once. I also believe these "entitlements" are obligations that have been made to the poor, sick, and elderly, and must be maintained until such a time that a transition is made possible to opt out.

Retirees should not be denied a single check, but they will be, while Congress continues in recess with full pay. I suppose they will collect interest on SSI. What is it, 0.0001%? This nation has failed the people as long as it is closed down and unwilling to take the steps necessary to fix the problems that are leading to a major economic collapse down the road.

Who says compromise can't be good?

Why don't Boehner and Barry compromise -- amnesty for illegals if they get a hysterectomy funded by ObamaCare?

Celebrate good times, come on!
