Ha Ha.

Sounds like the South Harmon Institute of Technology. Sorry but I couldn't resist.

We home schooled our kids with curriculum but we let them work at their own pace and let them work a lot of things out for themselves.

We also had friends who seemingly didn't teach anything who's kids seem "normal" though maybe less knowledgeable. I know one who didn't know oranges came in segments until she was 17 but I also talked to a public schooled woman who was surprised to find out that I was butchering a "bull" for beef. Go figure.

I also knew some kids that desired to go back to public school for the structure and interaction because they were bored at home.

I think it is good to have choices instead of one state mandated answer for everyone.

I agree. What we need is

I agree. What we need is competition. So what are the rules if I wanted to build a school anyway? must I teach government propaganda!? How does that work?

I love this! When I have kids they will go to this school, or else. Jk, but I really do love this.

Montessori is not precisely the same as unschooling.

this school

is based upon upon the works of Maria Montessouri
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Montessori

Developped in the late 1800's

"Montessori had many accomplishments with one being the Montessori Method which is a method of educating young children that stresses development of a child's own initiative and natural abilities, especially through practical play. This method allowed children to develop at their own pace and provided educators with a better understanding of child development. In Maria's book, The Montessori Method, she goes into further detail about the method. Educators in the field set up special environments to meet the needs of the students in three age groups: two and a half years, two and a half to six years, and six and a half to twelve years. The students learn through activities that involve exploration, manipulations, order, repetition, abstraction, and communication. The teacher is to encourage children in the first two age groups to use their senses to explore and manipulate materials in their immediate environment. Children in the last age group deal with abstract concepts based on their newly developed powers of reasoning, imagination, and creativity"

Sort of, but not really. It's actually based on the work of its founder, developmental psychologist Jay Feldman, and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky.

You can read more about it in this book by another psychologist, Peter Gray (his son went to the original Sudbury school in MA):

My niece works for a preschool in northwest Arkansas that uses the Montessori Method. It's amazing what those kids can do and and if they enter a government ran school 85% are way ahead of their peers.

Thanks for the info

Very interesting.

I had heard the name Montessori Method, but I didn't really know anything about it.

Seems that your niece is very happy with this method?!?

She loves it. With the toddlers/ preschoolers a lot of it has to do with independence and helping the younger ones like the four year old will help the three year old learn how to tie their shoes or the three year old will get their own juice. If they spill it they must clean it up. It really is amazing watching them (secretly) :)
