What has the Federal Government Done Successfully?

Just curious about anything they have done successfully, where in the process they didn't have to steal or kill?

taking credit for other

taking credit for other peoples work, and deflecting blame when they screw up, or what's commonly known as, being found out

They've been pretty successful at stamping out morality.

The hallmark of civilization is removing violence and threats from human interactions, and facilitating peaceful trade and other voluntary transactions, such as love and charity.

Government institutionalizes violence and threats, turning morality on its head. "Right" and "wrong" change into "lawful" and "unlawful." Obedience to politicians replaces obedience to individual conscience. Welfare replaces charity. Taxation and inflation replace voluntary trade with institutionalized extortion rackets. Statist indoctrination/obedience training replaces education. "Affirmative action" replaces tolerance. Social Security, Medicare, and Obamacare replace self-responsibility and thrift.

Authority replaces freedom.

This is a favorite book from my childhood...

He goes into this question with a lot of examples which would have most likely been accomplished more cheaply and efficiently by the free market, such as rural electrification and the postal service.

Interesting and humorous perspective.

Actually, the national

Actually, the national highway system. Well, I wouldnt want to write off the by products that came from space exploration either, but thats more of an indirect thing.
I suppose the highway system could have come about because of the states, but there is no way to know.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

I'm all for...

...privatization of space exploration, but would you consider anything like Hubble or Apollo to qualify as successes?

How about the Lewis & Clark expedition under Jefferson?

Considering that the Hubble telescope was launched with

a faulty lense and required a very expensive fix before it could see clearly, I would not say that it was exactly an example of efficiency or success.

As far as maned space flight, even some in NASA argued against it as being only a publicity ploy, diverting funds from more productive unmanned missions.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

Commercial...

...projects can have setbacks like that, too. I guess it's debatable whether or not totally private efforts would have had any similar failures on the way to overall success in the case of Hubble -- success in terms of the ultimate scientific return on investment.

How about Lewis and Clark? :)

Oops: that's a link to your wishlist.

The Most Dangerous Superstition is at this one. :)

Inflation. They are pretty good at that.

Also, turning market corrections into decade long depressions. And dropping bombs on people in other countries. They are pretty good at that too.

Oh, you were looking for something positive that they have done successfully? You got me there.

Pass gas?

Liberals always say...

Roads and the internet. It's a pretty standard response I've found.

They're pretty good at creating terrorists

They've successfully created the best propaganda the world..

has to offer.

They've successfully destroyed constitutional (inflation free) currency.

I could go on.

Dude, that's an easy question to answer

They have grown!

You consider the growing govt a success? I sure don't

.

I was being facetious

But you must admit, it is the one thing they do best. Oh you wanted to hear of a good thing they do well, that's a thought provoking question, I really can't think of anything.

I know... So was I

In hindsight it looks like maybe I was just being a Dick. Sorry. :)

Good question.

I asked a room full of people, all with various political views, this exact question. I didn't get one good answer and actually it was quite eye-opening for some.
