5 off-duty officers among bikers in SUV incident ~ Now it all makes sense!

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Eyewitness News has learned that among the bikers on the Henry Hudson last weekend, were five off-duty NYPD officers.

Sources say at least two detectives witnessed the attack on Alexian Lien and did not directly intervene. And investigators are still working to determine what role, if any, was played by the other three officers.

What is clear, sources say, is that the men did not begin to come forward until late Wednesday, four full-days after the incident.

And detectives are also investigating reports that several others in the group may have been off-duty New York City correction officers.

An undercover detective has informed Internal Affairs that he was present at the time of the confrontation.

The undercover narcotics detective, himself a motorcycle rider, was off duty. Official sources say he did not get involved because he did not want to blow his cover. Internal Affairs is now investigating. The undercover detective is being advised by an attorney.

Also Friday night, 38-year-old Reginald Chance of Brooklyn turned himself in to police and is in custody. Detectives believe he used his silver helmet to smash the driver's side window of the victim's SUV. However, his role in the actual assault of the driver is unclear.

Earlier Friday, the biker who allegedly opened the SUV's door at one point during the chase, is now in custody.

35-year-old Robert Sims, grabbed the SUV's door at 5:05 seconds into the YouTube video, surrendered to police in Brooklyn earlier Friday.

Detectives are also looking at about a half dozen other bikers who may have had a role in the assault of the driver. Some have already been interviewed by investigators after being identified by video and photographs that have been coming in. Investigators are interviewing as many motorcyclists as possible to determine their roles before filing charges.

"This is a complex investigation with a lot of people involved," a source said.

I'm glad I have 4WD at the touch of a button. I'd be putting the blazer in reverse and everything else to protect myself from my attackers.

Are off duty cops bound to enforce the law?

Do they even have the right to do so? For example, should they be able to make traffic stops while not on the job using their own vehicles?

All the riders had the same moral responsibility to stop this crime.

But if the cop was worried about blowing his cover, that indicates that he may not have been off-duty at all.

We have to wait and see how many were off duty

as opposed to undercover.

During the rides, bikers at the back of the pack often slow down to delay traffic. The move allows bikers at the front of the pack to take off, go fast, and perform stunts — but can lead to frustration for motorists.
In the video, some of the bikers are seen getting off their motorcycles and approaching the car. That was when police said some of the bikers begin damaging the Range Rover, though it’s not clear from the video.
“They take their helmets and they start to dent his car and apparently his tires are slashed there,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
Police said Lien panicked and the video shows the SUV suddenly accelerating, plowing over some of the motorcycles.
For the next several minutes of the video, the bikers can be seen chasing the Range Rover for about two miles. At one point, the SUV stops and one of the bikers is seen in the video ripping open the driver’s side door as the Range Rover speeds off.
The SUV eventually gets off the highway around West 178th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, police said.
As Lien gets stuck in traffic, the bikers surround him again, police said. One of the riders is seen in the video jumping off his bike, ripping off his helmet and using it to bash in the driver’s side window.
A second biker is also seen running up and hitting the driver’s side rear window with his fists.
At this point the video stops, but police said the attack continues.
Kelly said Lien is taken out of his car and assaulted.
Witnesses described what they saw.
“He got off his bike and started attacking the person in the Range Rover with his helmet, breaking the windows and after they got him out of his car, they beat him up,” said witness Christopher Quinones.
Lien was taken to the hospital where he needed stitches to his face. His wife and child were unhurt.
Police said one biker suffered two broken legs and other severe injuries when the SUV ran over him while another suffered a leg injury.
He was with his wife and infant daughter, and police said his fear they were in danger influenced his actions.During the rides, bikers at the back of the pack often slow down to delay traffic. This just confirms that:

You can never trust anybody but yourself to save your skin during an incident.

And that 911 police protection myth is just that, a myth.

And that cops are like priests. They take an oath to uphold the law yet break it constantly. Like priests take an oath to be sulibent yet are constantly having sexual relations with little boys. Running red lights, taking over highways, reckless driving, etc. etc... and cops participated.... yet, they will give you fines for the stupidest things when they are on duty. The system is RIGGED against good people!!!!!

Which leads me to believe that the best leaders are those who ACTUALLY LEAD and put their assess on the line even when it's not considered the "cool" thing to do.

These "off duty" cops could have helped stop this violence and instead have decided to do nothing. They should be fired. To consider your "cover" more important than the lives of innocent family in a car is a failure to perform their duty even if they were off duty! Any "REAL" cop who was on or off duty would have quickly intervened. These "off duty" cops in the pack should be fired immediately... They proved that they are not worthy to enforce anything!

And, I'm NOT shocked that they were apart of this biker gang. And for me, just goes to point out further that I DO NOT TRUST COPS!!!! They are a legal gang of thugs and bullies.

Cops whether on duty or off duty are people. And we all know the nature of people is corruption. And I can only imagine the stuff that goes on with these cops on and off duty. Stuff that would shock the "sheeple" because the "sheeple" actually believe cops are good and that having guns for self defense is bad. And all you have to do is dial 911... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ... yeah right... Dial 911 and die!

Cops are just another gang that carries guns and badges and we as taxpayers get to pay the bill. Why am I not surprised?

Law Enforcer vs Peace Officer

"They proved that they are not worthy to enforce anything!"

That is worth noting. If they had been Peace Officers, they would have immediately attempted to Keep the Peace.

Since they are 'Law Enforcers', they had to make a judgement call on whether to Enforce the Law regarding Assault, or Enforce the Law regarding Possession, Trade, or Use of Narcotics.

This is the problem with Arbitrary Law. We all know that implementing Arbitrary Law makes necessary Laws weaker, and this is a perfect example. In order to prosecute an Arbitrary Law, one must overlook a Necessary one.

What was the initial cause of the incident???
How did the SUV get caught up in the group???
I live on a major highway and biker groups (in the hundreds) go though here all the time, (usually for a benefit of some kind) but it doesn't take more than a minute or 2 for them all to clear.

They are stunt bikers

from what I've read. They are called the Hollywood Stuntz and they film themselves doing stunts on various roadways. They were in NY to film themselves doing what they hoped was a major stunt event.

To answer your questions:

The initial cause is that the SUV was in the way of this group shutting down the highway for their own fun.

The SUV was just travelling down the highway minding their own business until this swarm of idiots i mean bikers came upon them. The bikers didn't like the SUV where it was so they decided to "screw" with the SUV. Only it didn't turn out so well...

SUV did NOTHING to deserve this, bikers were the aggressive thugs who caused all the chain reactions that lead to the end result....

If that's the case then the asses that were involved should have their licenses taken, at the least!!
This is the kind of news that give ALL bikers a bad name.

Oh, and I ride too...

But I would never have been part of these types of bikers... they clearly have serious issues and a disregard for truth and what is right.

This is an interesting piece of information

I have heard it reported two different ways, that there were off duty police and police working under cover. Off duty is off duty, is this what the police do for recreation? Terrorize the locals and break traffic laws when not enforcing the law? I think there will be a whole lot more coming out if this does go to trial.

One thing that did not make any sense, was how could this group ride through the city for hours (as per the Vid), breaking multiple traffic laws and not attract any law enforcement? That brings up the question, were the police aware of this group and intentionally did not engaged them? Was this because they knew the group was being investigated by under cover cops or because they knew their buddies were riding in the group and they decided to give them a pass?

Just maybe if the police had done their job and turned their blue lights on when these hooligan "stunt riders" were hot dogging through the streets this incident would never have happened?

huh... imagine that:

state actors behaving exactly the same whether in or out of the uniform.

Guess what they say is true: some love their work so much, they can't help but to bring it home, with them.
