Obama arresting catholic priest over the Government shutdown.

The U.S. military has furloughed as many as 50 Catholic chaplains due to the partial suspension of government services, banning them from celebrating weekend Mass. At least one chaplain was told that if he engaged in any ministry activity, he would be subjected to disciplinary action.

“In very practical terms it means Sunday Mass won’t be offered,” Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services told me. “If someone has a baptism scheduled, it won’t be celebrated.”

John Schlageter, general counsel for the archdiocese, said any furloughed priests volunteering their services could face big trouble.

“During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so,” he said in a written statement.

*Update* Congress votes to maintain chaplains

After the vote, Congressman Collins, himself a U.S. Air Force chaplain and Iraq war veteran, said:

“We have a Bill of Rights for a reason—that no matter the fiscal condition of the federal government, the rights of the people are guaranteed. This is a week that has seen veterans denied their right to assemble at our national monuments, travelers denied access to roads their hard-earned dollars have paid for, and now chaplains ordered to stop providing religious services to those who are selflessly willing to lay down their lives for ours… Congress is duty bound to act as quickly as possible to protect the rights of the American people, and I am proud that we did so today.”

Even to minister without pay?

It isn't disciplinary action, it's tyranny. It isn't being arrested, it is kidnapping. It isn't military authority, it is criminals.

Who is your final authority? When you go without pay to minister, then pray for the government but go ahead and do what your ministry calls for. So what if you are kidnapped? Let them do as they wish just like everyone who is without hope. Your authority is God, not a tyrannical government.

why are tax dollars being used

to promote any particular religion to begin with?

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

On the other hand, the military might not allow civilians access to military facilities. Which makes sense.

It would be difficult to allow full religious practice if soldiers had to leave base at various times to attend Mass- impossible if the military was deployed.

But I agree- let the diocese pay.

Hey Reverend Jesse, what say y'all?

headline lie

another headline lie brought to you by the DP...

not that this is good but the article doesnt say the priests are being arrested. It says they could face disciplinary actions including losing their job if they minister during the shutdown.

"The source told me the chaplain was told that if he violated those orders he and his supervisor would be subjected to disciplinary action – with the possibility of being fired."

No pay ok.

But banning them from volunteering sounds like persecution to me.

From the article:

"I find it odd that the military was able to find enough cash to let their football teams play this weekend – but they can’t scrounge up enough cash for weekend church services."

Google is government.

Where are the religious leaders? Can you imagine the press?

American priests arrested for holding mass. This is a perfect time for civil disobedience.
