Will any of Paul's policies help with unemployment?

0 votes

I was talking to someone tonight about Ron Paul and he mentioned that he felt that Ron Paul wouldn't be good for jobs and that a lot of jobs would be lost if he became president. I really didn't know how to respond to this. I looked for information when I got back home but have been unable to find anything. Any ideas how Paul's views on smaller government or any of his other policies would affect American jobs?
Also he was concerned with the military personnel losing jobs if Paul brought our troops from all over the world back home. Has Paul mentioned what he would do with the thousands of overseas troops and military personnel once they were back home

American Jobs

A rational immigration policy along with tax cuts, reduction of business regulation, real free trade and elimination of the minimum wage (not sure if RP has supported but it is a libertarian position) would all provide enough jobs to employ all of the ex-military, ex-government bureaucrats and probably many legal, tax paying immigrants.

food for thought

I understand your confusion on this issue. I am still learning about RP's positions and try to look at at least one of his writings every day on http://www.ronpaul2008.com/articles/. From what I've gathered to this point, I would say that RP could help to stimulate our own economy by decreasing the amount of military spending on other nations--either by wars that we create or by nations already at war. In the most recent Republican debate, he made this point when the issue of spending came up; RP said that reducing overseas military spending would help us to refocus our efforts on rebuilding the tenuous American economy. He also wants to secure our borders and to create a more restrictive immigration policy. In addition, one of his writings from March 2007 estimates that our national debt is 8.2 trillion. A little over a month ago, I read in the New York Times that the war in Iraq has cost us over 3.5 trillion dollars. Some food for thought, anyway. Thanks for your thoughtful question, and I will continue reading and inquiring with your words in mind.

Freedom changes everything!!

My family recently celebrated the 105th birthday of my grand uncle. He's been an entrepeneur since childhood, selling vegetables from his mother's garden to neighbors. My sister and I compiled a book for the whole family from memoirs he had written back when he was 95 years old. My contribution was to retype his memoirs into "Word" so my sister could insert the text into the Ancestry.com program she was working with for the book. In retyping his memoirs it struck me how much this country has changed in the last 100 years, how complicated we have made things for ourselves, and there by placing limits on ourselves.

My grand uncle had observed a popular orange juice stand in California, and thought it would do great business in the Midwest, where he was from. In those days it was a matter of negotiating your rental space, buying or financing your equipment and you were in business. No licenses, hidden fees or bureaucratic hoops to jump through. A few years later he brought soft ice cream to the Midwest, having seen it in Florida. Tallest man in the world, Robert Wadlow was one of his customers. This time he bought the building, and sublet the space during the winter when people weren't buying ice cream.

He faired well during the depression, because he had most of his savings in "Postal Savings Accounts". I thought this idea was particularly interesting, and had never heard of these. But for smaller towns that didn't have banks, the Post Office served as a place for people to set up savings accounts, and these accounts weren't affected by the crash.

What Ron Paul's economic plan does for America is it unleashes imagination and removes the obstacles for entrepreneurs. Instead of penalizing success, it encourages and rewards productive behavior. Ron Paul really does have a Prescription for Prosperity. How I wish this could be introduced on the floor of the house tomorrow, instead of this witless, pay now/pay later "stimulus package".

Print copies of Ron Paul's economic plan and start putting it on the windshields in parking lots, insert it into restaurant menus (highlight "tax free tips"), leave it on the seat of the bus you ride, leave it in the back seat of a taxi you take, leave it in waiting rooms at your doctor's office, dentists office, and definately bring it with you to caucuses. This is the policy every republican has been waiting for! Regardless of how they feel about foreign policy, Ron Paul's economic policy is more Reagan than Reagan!

There's no limit to this freedom campaign, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!!

Thanks for sharing that. It

Thanks for sharing that. It made me think of my Grandma and how she had all kinds of businesses and stores, eventually becoming a real estate tycoon by the time she passed away. She only had a 4th grade formal education, but a lot of entrepreneurial spirit at a time that rewarded such people.

Thank you all so much

I don't know how to express my astonishment at the number of responses I received when I checked this thread this morning. In only 12 hours after posting this question I have received close to 60 responses. I'm all my years of posting on online forums (over 10 years) I have NEVER seen this number of responses come so quickly. I'm used to getting 3 or 4 responses over days, but this is amazing. We really do have a great number of supporters and believers that seemed to be well educated in the subjects of economics and foreign affairs and that is really encouraging, REALLY encouraging.

ALL IN GOOD TIME

If things were to go the way we would like them to go, RP becomes the next Commander in Chief and begins to set in motion the correction of the major issues that have create this mess we are in. In short order, It would eventually work its way down to the small business owners and even help others that want to start small businesses, hire employees, and all in good time would right the things that are wrong and ill in our markets. The young people that would be leaving military life would have the chance to use their imaginations and get going in their own way into the economy and daily business. We have become a service country and history shows that won't take us far. We will need to get back to an industrial base and have others buying products and commodities from us instead of the reverse. We all know that the younger generations have dreams that have yet to be squashed and the energy to implement those dreams. My dream is to make sure they have the opportunity and a country that will allow them to realize those dreams. Run RON Run!!!

I love my country
I am appalled by my government

The only jobs government can create

are government workers or government subsidized jobs.
In the private sector the government can only suppress jobs.
The first class of jobs only exist because of taxpayer money.
In the second, the only solution is less government intervention.
less government = more (productive) jobs.

Only the economy will help with unemployment

however with all those troops and spending coming back to the good ol USA, the economy ought to get one heck of a boost. Much greater impact then the "stimulus package"

I believe he will help a lot

I believe he will help a lot with Self-employment by getting rid of the IRS

Everyone who WANTS to work will have a JOB!

The freedom to think and imagine yourself as a business owner will know no limits.

"What the mind can CONCEIVE, and BELIEVE, it can ACHIEVE! "Napoleon Hill

Believe in yourself and visualize your success, and it will happen.

Been raised, taught, and educated to DEPEND on others, the govt., parents, etc.. Imagine the prosperity which freedom alone will give you.

Problem is, most people do not know they've lost all their freedoms. They won't know until "they" are ready to use them.

"They" seem to feel imbolded these past couple years, so is easier to point out!

I like the one man who tells potential Paul supporters, "Are you tired of having the government telling you what you can and cannot do?" Those are lost freedoms that EVERYONE can see!

Yup

Deregulation, cutting taxes, and getting out of people's business will spawn creativity, investment, and competition. Many more companies and entrepreneurs will enter the market and thus create more jobs. Existing employers will have more funds and less risk to take on more employees and keep the ones they have. Further, HB1 visas may be halted or revamped since they are currently displacing many high tech jobs from citizens with immigrants who will work for low wages.

Plenty of jobs and very quick

RP wants the troops home and they will need a place to stay. This will create an imediate need to build or expand existing bases. This will be high paying construction jobs. Every base will create jobs and improve the economy around them. This is just day one and nobody could stop him from doing it. He also wants to get rid of SOX and other regulations. SOX is the number one reason for the decline of new companies in America.

There are many ways to address this

"Free market...'

Look at PC's...no regulation. In a free market the companies compete thus benefiting you and me. In 1968 my school had a computer with a link to MIT in Cambridge. This computer was a Fortran "card machine." This and the MIT computer combined cost $1,000,000 in 1960's dollars and had about 2% of the computing capacity as a Dell that costs $400 does today. The examples are endless for the benefits of the free market. Government regulation stifles these markets and worsens our quality of life. Think about it. What if the government was responsible for making sure everyone had a cell phone?

Have you ever been to the DMV?

The next approach is "oh my God, I won't be able to get my grants and student loans..."

What would happen with the deregulation of the college financing business is thousands of entrepeneurs would rush into the market and compete the sh%$ out of each other trying to get the business. Also, do you really think the University of Illinois isn't going to bust their ass to get students financed? All of this would result in a better borrowing environment for students and parents. Would here be scams? Of course, do your research. That is what freedom is.

The thought that government creates jobs is a wrong thought. I have been in business all of my life. Business people create jobs based on their ability to invest capital and get a return. If an industry is heavily regulated only rich men who own congressmen can get "in."

Finally, I like to throw this in. I have friends and family with children/soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr.Paul will bring them home and then I say "their safety and their families are really important to me..."
Then I shut up and let them listen to their conscience. A person's heart will do a better campaigning job than I can.

I have been trying to find

I have been trying to find an article I read in the Canadian Financial News, it said that the Canadians were worried that if Ron Paul was elected President that it would make the United States SO COMPETITIVE and the economy SO SOUND that Canada would have to totally revamp the way its economy works.

Don't forget

The enforcement of import tariff's on U.S. companies that outsource manufacturing overseas and bring it back into the U.S. market, tariff free.
When RP axes NAFTA and unfair trade treaties, U.S. companies will find it more expensive to outsource manufacturing and services overseas for the U.S. markets.

R U KIDDING?

Ron Paul's economic program would stimulate this economy to grow jobs like you have not seen in a long time. He wants to stop regulating local banks so they will be allowed to lend money to small local businesses which they can't do now. Can you imagine all the business that will be drawn back here to the us when they eliminate the capital gains and speed up depreciation of business assets. Bringing back sound money will increase our purchasing power as well as further stimulate personal and business growth. Then eliminating tax on savings accounts and Social security will further speed up the growth of our econmy. Finally stop rewarding businesses for moving off shore or to China and other third world countries would bring back and keep our jobs here.
If you have yet to get this then I think you better start educating yourself about Ron Paul Economic plan.

Yes !!!

Free market economics is the only thing which can produce real jobs and prosperity - Ron Paul is the champion of free market economics !

The globalists who are pushing for an NAU want to bring down the health of the US economy (and value of the dollar) to make it easier to blend the US, Canada and Mexico together - Ron Paul will stop this nonsense. The reason they are trying to build a giant freeway from Mexico to Canada (Trans-Texas Corridor) is so multi-national corporations bringing Chinese goods into America can bypass US tariffs and strong labor unions at US ports - Ron Paul will put a stop to this nonsense !

Ron Paul will reduce taxes and regulations, Ron Paul will reduce government spending, Ron Paul will promote liberty and self-responsibility, ALL of these things will stimulate job creation and prosperity. Yes, Yes, YES ! A Ron Paul presidency will create jobs ... LOTS of 'em !

Easy cuting the IRS will

Easy cuting the IRS will give people more money to spend and invest. What will create alot jobs.

Gov't job versus real job

When you go to the store to buy a product, you do so because you want the product more than the money you will need to exchange to pay for it. And the people who have produced, transported and sold the product to you want your money more than they do the product you are buying. The result is that everyone involved in the transaction is happier as a result of the transaction. Everyone gets what they want, within the limitations of the real world in which "wants" are infinite and resources scarce. This is the nature of REAL jobs - they satisfy the needs and desires of all those involved. In this way, the wealth of the nation constantly increases because each exchange in the market leaves everyone wealthier - BY THEIR OWN TERMS - than they were before.

Jobs created by government, on the other hand, take money by force through taxes from people who have other things they would rather do with their money. So the taxpayer is less wealthy. The person producing the goods or services the taxpayer would rather have spent his money on is also less wealthy because the taxpayer could not afford the goods or services he wanted to sell. The government skims off some of the taxpayer's money for administrative costs, which only makes bureaucrats wealthier, and then pays out the rest for someone to do a job that the public really doesn't want done. How do we know the public doesn't want it done? Because if the public had wanted it done, the public would have paid for it directly out of their own pockets. So when government creates jobs, what it is really doing is thwarting the people's choice about the goods and services they want most and instead substitutes a forced allocation of resources toward goods and services that are not a high priority for the people. So government jobs actually reduce national wealth.

By allowing people to use the fruits of their labor as they wish, the invisible hand of the market guides us all toward greater wealth and happiness. Government interference can only disrupt and impede this process.

His policies will help more than anyone elses

I would point him to RP's economic plan first off.

I used to own/operate a small business. What stopped me from continuing it was gov't regulations and taxes. This is something RP will address. Larger government = less jobs. He will reduce the size of the federal govt. Eventually he would get rid of the income tax. Regarding the military after most wars the economy gets better. Look at after WW2, and more recently after the first Iraq War. Also, bringing the troops home does not mean cutting the size of the military! I have not heard him say he would cut the size of the military. Which means all the bases that are running on reserves here in the US now will actually have troops stationed there again. There are many reserve people out there fighting in Iraq and they could go off of active duty to reserve again.

Ron Paul's plan to allow competing currency's would also help the economy. The competing currency would be backed by gold or silver. This would stop inflation. This would bring down oil prices which would keep more money in the US.

Ron wants to end NAFTA. NAFTA is responsible for lots of jobs leaving the country! Most of these jobs are blue collar jobs. Ask anyone in Michigan if they think NAFTA was a good idea.

The main thing to realize is more govt regulation = less people in business, which clearly hurts jobs. Good question..

Amen

my 2nd year in business I made $300,000. 2/3 went for costs and payroll. The last $100,000 went to taxes and mandated insurance and fees. I made NOTHING that year. Otherwise I would have had a six figure income. This is a true, but sad example.

Depends

There are some people in this country, like it or not, who just do not have either the mental capacity or ethics to hold down a job. They are just un-employable for some reason or another. Immaturity, Drug Addiction, etc..

Dr. Paul's policies will setup the ideal environment for jobs to flourish, it is still up to the people with the money to create the jobs and the people who want to work to go out and work the jobs that are available.

Another point you have to look at is what goes into those unemployment numbers. If I made a huge windfall profit from an investment and decided to take a year off of work, guess what, I am included in the unemployment numbers as I did have a job last year but do not this year etc..

The point of Dr. Pauls policies is no to cure a bunch of things directly but to create the environment to where the people will cure them themselves.

Less taxes create jobs. Take

Less taxes create jobs. Take the tax burden away from businesses, large and small, and they have the ability to grow.

Plus, what would happen if you removed property tax? People would become more self reliant and start to use their property for a living. Local farmers would sprout up everywhere and you'd see more and more small businesses sprout up on the street. Farmers markets would be "farmers markets" again instead of the 2nd hand junk sales that they've turned into.

Yes it will.

This is an awesome article of a country that has recently done what Ron Paul is trying to accomplish:

What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen

The jobs lost in the government sector, will get opportunities in the private sector.

There will not be (hopefully) [there will be less] government hand out of contracts to favorite corporations, the people will and should start their own corporation with the expertise they have when working in government.

This private sector will create a boom in job market.
