I'd recommend using Krazy Glue instead of twine...

Twine could break or loosen and cause you to trip. Krazy Glue poured all over the bottom of your feet sticks good and last a long time. Besides, who wants to spend all their time tying twine?

How about both?

You could use some kind of intermediary material. Something flat and durable, like leather. You attach the leather to the rubber all around the edges with the Krazy glue, then weave the twine into the other edge of the leather, then use that weave to tighten the remaining edges of the leather over your instep.

on hot days you can stand on some hot asphalt and it will stick

to your feet forming a protective layer that lasts for weeks.

LOL...Reminds me of how the Maya

are said to have coated their feet with rubber. Made by mixing rubber tree sap (latex) with morning glory vine sap, for pliability.
