A western Ohio woman charged with petty theft for allegedly stealing $2.87 from a courthouse fountain says she is jobless and took the change to buy food.

WBNS in Columbus reports the woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday. A police report alleges she stole the change Oct. 7 from the Logan County Courthouse fountain in Bellefontaine, and an officer asked her what she was doing and found change in her pocket.

Seems to me that she was just

Seems to me that she was just cleaning up litter and pollution that people threw away on public property.

Pitched in!

Here is 10.00 I took from our local fountain. I've probably threw 10.00 in there over a life time. In a true free society, people voluntarily help others in need out of their heart. Not by force or by decree. Hang in there sister! Things are gonna get easier.....

For Freedom!
The World is my country, all mankind is my brethren, to do good is my religion.

Someone once told me that it not a crime to clean out a wishing well of coins. This person had a lot of coins.

It may be more common for ponds because the cleaning out of coins helps the fish and birds that use them. So it is seen as a service and the reward is the loot.

If you are on privately held land with public access than I could hardly think you have stolen anything. They may have the right to kick you off the property though.

Ask them for the oath of office, put it as Exhibit A for the record.

Comment:

My faith in the compassion of people has been restored by what is being accomplished here. While the donations will be helpful, I feel that to prosecute Ms. Romine is an injustice. I have emailed the mayor of Bellefontaine and city safety director and if anyone is interested in doing the same the mayor's name is Adam Brannon and his email address is abrannon@ci.bellefontaine.oh.u s and the safety directors name is James Holycross and his email address is jholycross@ci.bellefontaine.oh .us. Wishing Deidre health, happiness, and security!!!

I hope this is being done in a way that

makes this contribution a "gift," and not "income," so that it is not taxable.

Coins in the courthouse fountain: One woman’s wish

Dierdre Romine_opt

(By Brian Evans)

It’s a bit of an urban phenomenon that dates back to Roman, British and Celtic mythology: For centuries, people across the world have tossed their shiny coins into fountains all around to make wishes.

In so doing, many people wish for love, wealth and happiness.

Deidre Romine’s wish, however, is a pretty basic one — it was a wish for something that so many of us take for granted.

This past Monday, Romine’s wish was for food, for herself and for her four cats — only Romine wasn’t casting a coin into the fountain to make her wish come true — she was taking coins out.

What kind of LE arrests someone for this?

I'm ...

Flabbergasted...

Apoplectic...

Beside myself...

For the love of fuck!

I am so glad I live amongst humans and not cock-smokers who arrest someone for picking up change discarded by others ... to buy FOOD!!

I'm going out to plant another two packets of veggie seeds today, I'm THAT pissed off!

My first reaction was Why didn't he just give her 10 bucks?

But as it worked out the charges were dropped and now thousands of people who want to help know about Deidre Romine

$2,155 raised by 84 people in 1 day.

So, in a perverse way, the LE did her a favor? Huh.

I know very little about the extenuating circumstances surrounding this incident, just the information available at the links you posted.

I don't really have enough information to back up my initial rant, but I still stand behind it, because it makes my main point: the dehumanizing aspect found in large populations where anonymity is the rule.

I am very encouraged at the outpouring of support for Deidre. It's another one of those moments when we are 'reminded of what it is like to be human'. I just hate to see my fellow humans reach the point of desperation before they ask for or receive help from neighbors.

Romine’s husband of six

Romine’s husband of six years, Daniel Rae, she said died of cancer around this time last year.

Picking up $ people throw away is stealing?

I always thought throwing coins in a fountain, WAS FOR THE HOMELESS.

Really!

When you think about it this gal found a non-violent way to just pick up discarded money without 'stealing'.

Thousands of as-s-h-o-l-e-s rob banks and stores when they get desperate. She didn't bother anybody.

But thank God she got caught because now she's tapped into a network of good people who want to help her.
