I drove the Beijing to Shanghai Antique Car Rally...

I just finished driving the Beijing to Shanghai Classic Car Rally. It was quite amazing and I posted daily (almost) comments about it on the Freetalklive BBS.

http://bbs.freetalklive.com/general/in-beijing-for-antique-c...

There are not many westerners who can say they have driven in China much less to say they have driven a rally there. I have to say that I consider myself very lucky to have had this opportunity and my wife (my navigator) and I had a really great time doing it.

Here's a link to the LA Times coverage of the Beijing to Shanghai Rally. On the 6th image you can see me getting out of the 58 Volvo I was driving.

I'm still in China and

I'm still in China and haven't had time to sort my pictures. I also want to put some video on my "Christian Anarchist" youtube channel. What picture sharing site does everyone recommend?

As far as the border and customs people I've only had one issue in 19 years of traveling back and forth (maybe 25 trips). Our son loves swords and fancy knives and so we had one carved Mongolian knife in our CHECKED bags and when it went through the x-ray it set off an alarm. The little cop guy was called over and even though the knife is only illegal if you are carrying it on your person (I believe that's the law here) and even though on our last trip home we had a full-sized sword in our baggage, this jerk decided that he had to "confiscate" it and of course he said he was doing us a favor because he could have written us an infraction. The customs people in the USA are much more stern and have almost a hateful attitude towards travelers. I have noticed this trip that the "authorities" are getting more and more like ours and getting that "attitude". They are still nicer by far than ours. Even my wife's parents have stated that the Chinese authorities are nicer and the US authorities are rude and offensive. Here sometimes when they see an old person come to the x-ray machine trying to life their bags up onto the conveyor, they will just tell them to forget it and pass through.

Unfortunately the RP Corvette

Unfortunately the RP Corvette is too new to participate in this classic car rally. Cutting off a local police car in the Ron Paul Liberty Corvette would have been sweet...

wow. talk about reversal of perception, eh?

thank you for sharing that.

the customs story sounds just about right; from everyone I know who travel regularly and saw the progressive uptick in authoritarian attitude among govt terrorists, especially more so, post-9/11 policestate.

it's truly insane, and shameful that people can now factually state that the Chinese communist govt employees are far more courteous, than 'ours!'

talk about falling off the morality rails...

but as you state, if the Chinese themselves are also beginning to 'adopt our -tude' more, or in their case, backwards toward how they used to be... well, it almost sounds like 'our' policies are like some tyranny virus or something! yikes!

that Mongolian knife story... and you know that douche probably sold yours off on eBay or something; if the piece was unique (will certainly be more easily spottable), I wouldn't be surprised if it turned up somewhere online for sale!

you truly wonder what these tinpot Banana Republic dictator wannabes would be, or be doing, without govt jobs...

as far as pictures, seeing as how I personally try to limit visual digital signatures as much as possible, I haven't used that many online picture sites. but I have seen many use these:

even Twitter.

good luck!

PS. did you guys drive off road a lot by the way? can't wait to see the photos .D

thank you for sharing!

We drove national highways

We drove national highways for the most part. They are similar to our Route 66 etc. We did drive some tollways, but they tried to limit those because the whole idea is to expose the drivers to China and China to the classic cars...

I have been twice to China

More recently, I spent eight months in 2012/13. Though I traveled to many cities, most of the time I lived in Guilin Guangxi. It is in the south central part of China; a city of about 6 million souls.

It is exceptionally clean. The air is very breathable and the people are wonderful.

But, let's face it, the Chinese people are AWFUL drivers. I wondered how thousands of people were not injured or killed, on the road, each day.

If you are interested about some other impressions I had from my time there, I wrote this article at the request of Lew Rockwell, upon my return in the fall of 2011. If you read it, I hope you like it: http://www.lewrockwell.com/2011/11/skip-cook/china-chaos-and...

Congratulations on

your Best Driver award! It sounds like it was a lot of fun. Loved your description of "flexible" driving.

Sounds like fun

I just moved to Shanghai in August and am not sure I would be able to drive here as it is so congested lol, enjoy your time in China.

The last event of the rally

The last event of the rally was to drive "The Bund" which is the street along the river with all the western buildings from the late 1800's. It was quite a view with the Oriental Pearl and all the tall buildings. The parade made quite a spectacle and on both sides of the street people were taking photos and making videos of us driving by. Enjoy your time teaching English, the Chinese people really like Americans and have quite a distorted view of what life is like in the USA. I'm sure you can give them an education in much more that just English.

lol... yeah...

Some things occurred along the way and now I'm in China.... Thinking of South America next, but man... I would hate to be abroad to miss anything big as far a revolution goes. I already feel like I might be missing out on some things over here.
I am glad to see ya around again though, it was weird for a while a lot of the regulars disappeared for a bit, but people are making their way back over there.

as Ron said

"they can never un-hear what we say"
sometimes i try to forget.
coupled with a relentless work schedule, i just needed to unplug for a bit.
thought a week of kayak camping would do it, not this time. total unplug was needed.
any other surprises? like you moved to china with your husband?
maybe we can continue this in the jam session? i feel bad hijacking the thread.

"Flexible" Chinese Traffic

I had the pleasure of an unexpected port-call in a large port city on mainland China in the summer of 1998.

All the people I encountered there were exceedingly friendly and helpful.

One moped taxi driver happily encouraged me to inform all my American brethren that the Chinese really are free there ... free to drive on any part of the road they desire! (Flexible!)

Awesome food, night life and curio shopping back then in 1998.

Thanks for posting the link to your rally adventure. I've had a yearning desire to be a rally driver for a long time. How did you get involved with this rally to begin with?

I have visited China many

I have visited China many times in the last 19 years due to my wife being from there so I watched many changes over those years. One of my interests is classic cars and as the "car culture" grew in China I observed the lack of old cars (since almost no one owned a car 10 years ago). I did a search for classic cars in China and pretty much the only hit was this classic car rally so I met with the guy last December and my wife and I decided to try it out. It's sad that I did not get my Corvette shipped in time because I really would rather have driven that...
