A black box in your car? Some see a source of tax revenue

The devices would track every mile you drive —possibly including your location — and the government would use the data to draw up a tax bill.
Tracking mileage

WASHINGTON — As America's road planners struggle to find the cash to mend a crumbling highway system, many are beginning to see a solution in a little black box that fits neatly by the dashboard of your car.

The devices, which track every mile a motorist drives and transmit that information to bureaucrats, are at the center of a controversial attempt in Washington and state planning offices to overhaul the outdated system for funding America's major roads.

The usually dull arena of highway planning has suddenly spawned intense debate and colorful alliances. Libertarians have joined environmental groups in lobbying to allow government to use the little boxes to keep track of the miles you drive, and possibly where you drive them — then use the information to draw up a tax bill.

"Big Brother Is Coming To Your Car"

"This is a topic that has been on my radar screen for a while, but one that very few Americans seem to be paying attention to despite the egregious revelations concerning NSA spying that have emerged recently."

"This is simply idiotic. There is already a tax per gallon on gasoline, so people are already being taxed based on how much they drive. Only a control-freak, moronic government bureaucrat would come to the conclusion that the solution to this problem is to install Orwellian tracking devices in people’s cars."

First animals chipped, then homes & appliances, now cars.

See where this is going? We're next. We're the only things left that haven't been chipped. With the implementation of Obamacare, there will be even fewer of us to chip, which will be an additional cost-savings on production of the number of chips needed to do the job. Slippery slopes are real.

Doesn't bother me...

Doesn't bother me, anything electronic can be hacked and a work around can be found in no time. The iphone fingerprint scanner was hacked 2 days after it hit the market. I found it hilarious that some people were using their nipple instead of their fingerprint. Hahahahahaha!

RickStone

Except you wont pass emisssions.

They look for that now during your emissions test.

Here in PA exempt (antique/classic) cars

Don't go through any inspection - safety or emissions.

Not to mention ....

...they are e m P proof as well. I.e. when the roadblock points their directed e nerg y we apon at you to stop you, you'll just keep going! :)

Simple...

Simple, remove before test , replace after test. Cars with hydrogen generators make the exhaust so clean that the testers don't believe the co2 levels are correct. They say that there must be a hole in the exhaust system and flunk them. So remove before test, replace after test. Everything in life has a work around. Have you watched political corruption or police corruption lately? They have a work around for everything.

RickStone

Someone needs to try it.

The assumption you are making is that emissions testing is about emissions, kind of like Obamacare being about health care.

Is it possible that another assumption could be made that emissions testing has very little to do with emissions and more to do with downloading the data from your cars computer to hand over to you know who?

And further that if something is not in order with their ability to do that that you will "fail" emissions with a failure code indicating that you need to go to your dealership for repairs and then come back for another emissions test?

I.e. someone needs to try your idea before you say that it will work.

Necessity ...

Necessity is the mother of invention, it's always has been. If life was left to naysayers we would still be living in a cave and hunting with sticks. I have confidence in human nature to overcome people who would inflict authoritarian rule. The solution may not be available now but it will come. If you give up without trying, you have already lost.

RickStone

I don't disagree, but one needs to start with the facts.

Without the facts, you can't map from A to B.

It is illegal for dealerships to alter the computer. I would LOVE to find a liberty mechanic with the skills.

One other thing, Rick, everything you state is true if there's a profit motive. Is there one for this?

You pay about $10 a week in gas tax for highway maintenance.

That's about $500/Year from each car on the road.

The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. On average, as of January 2013, state and local taxes add 30.4 cents to gasoline and 30.0 cents to diesel, for a total US average fuel tax of 49.5 cents per gallon for gas and 54.8 cents per gallon for diesel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_taxes_in_the_United_States

All 2014 models, Toyota since 2010

All new cars made or sold in the US eff 2014 model year have these.

Additionally, they broadcast and are readable by roadside monitor-readers, not just downloadable by cops or emissions or insurance companies or dealerships or people who want to rob your home.

Drive exempt vehicles

A quote from Mr. Jefferson

All experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

So have we had enough yet?

Sovereign Forever, I used your quote to reply on LAT site

Evan Halper,

"Libertarians have joined environmental groups in lobbying..."?

~ Really Evan?

"All experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."--Thomas Jefferson

~ I don't think Libertarians are looking to increase government oppression beyond the "Hope and Change" we now suffer Evan.

~ This is not about taxes. Government could easily raise the gas tax without any infrastructure expenses to track vehicles.

~ This is about expanding the real time, beast grid and meta data footprint to keep track of the "guilty-until-proven-innocent-Americans".

~ And you Evan are so eager to lend a helping hand. Where is your brain?

Thank you

nice to know something I say gets past the MSM filters

Reprehensible

The quote that "Libertarians have joined environmental groups in lobbying to allow government to use the little boxes to keep track of the miles you drive, and possibly where you drive them — then use the information to draw up a tax bill" is also ideologically false

...as per UN Agenda 21.

Eventually you will be taxed for every mile traveled.

Lest not forget .

All those bicycles. That think they own the road. Taxes on mileage stinks. And they would still tax gas. Might as well get a horse and buggy. I,ll pay in road apples.
