At age 4 I taught myself to read and do rather advanced mathematics. I tested out of reading class in kindergarten and was excused during reading exercises. At this time I was reading the daily newspaper and the dictionary by choice (I know, what child would choose to read the dictionary?...but there I was). During reading class I was not obligated to study with the other children, but was not given anything of value to do. I was given books like the little engine that could rather than something that matched my usual intake of much more advanced literature. As a result I became "Disruptive", "Distracted" and a host of other blanket terms all leading to my eventual diagnosis at age 8 of having a "Learning disorder". I was promptly put on Cylert (aka Pemoline), a powerful stimulant. For 6 years I was forced to take this medication daily, causing me to suffer insomnia (Which persists to this day. I am now 30), hallucinations, symptoms often associated with schizophrenia such as perceiving taunting or hostile gestures and expression from those around me, and a complete emotional disassociation with my family and friends. I honestly believed that love was a myth used to control people until I was 17 years old, being as my emotions had been turned off at the source.
It is a sad fact that more and more children are being diagnosed with "Attention Deficit Disorder" and forced to take medication to dampen their learning ability simply because they are MORE INTELLIGENT than those who are supposed to be teaching them. I think the ADD issue is one of the biggest tragedies of our time, and is being escalated rather than corrected.
