Rand Paul WILL place hold on Yellen nomination over Audit the Fed

Sen. Rand Paul said on Tuesday that he plans to place a hold on Janet Yellen’s nomination to be Federal Reserve chair to try and force a vote on a bill he argues would increase transparency at the central bank.

“I don’t think technically you can file a hold until she comes out of committee – but we’re putting people on notice that we will,” Paul told POLITICO.

...

“We’d lift it if we can get a vote,” Paul said of the hold. “We’ve been waiting two years on a vote on the Audit the Fed Bill. It passed overwhelmingly on the House and we’d be happy to lift the hold if we do get a vote.”

Here's the letter Rand wrote to Harry Reid today requesting a vote on S. 209:

Reid MUST find 60 votes to break the hold. There are 44 Senators ON THE RECORD of supporting the Audit the Fed bill. We can force a vote but everyone needs to call their Senators.

feeling this alien invasion in the guise of human proclamation?

because that's the feeling they want you to have when they attempt to nip this whole libertarian strain in the bud.

They will swiftly attempt to proclaim such govt rights over money equal to FDR but scaling the Globe. They will take your concept of consitution and judicialize it in the courts to a point so prehistoric the courts will become at the whim of the public over night. They will reform SCOTUS yet again to achieve even greater progress towards effecting the status of 21st century citizens in the rhelms of commercial activities and into household activities; seizing commerce power over the individual in ways no longer checked by representatives of the people, but rather enforced by the department of justice.

Did this hold give way to political expediency?

Rand was fighting this battle alone. He was hoping for additional support, which seems to have never materialized. He must have thrown in the towel figuring why take on this additional risk of being further ridiculed and marginalized as a troublemaker for the status quo. It's also dangerous to single-handedly battle a cartel of the most powerful bankers in the world. People and family members can be found dead when going up against trash like this. Rand correctly thought better of it.

What does it matter?

Damage is done. By the time OBAMA gets out of office. The debt will be closer to 23 TRILLION. You people are now in the last phase of becoming a corporate fascist state

Well?

What happened to that "hold" thing?

Michael when Harry Reid

Michael when Harry Reid changed the Senate rules, and invoked the nuclear option (requiring only simple majority for nominees), 51 votes can end Paul's hold.

SteveMT's picture

Was this all that this "hold" would have been? A filibuster?

All that a Rand-invoked filibuster against Yellen would have done would be to delay the vote for 24 hours at the most. That would not have done much anyway.

I've been wondering the same

I've been wondering the same thing. Did he mention in any news interviews that he changed his course of action?

BMWJIM's picture

A hold is the short form fillibuster. Harry

Reid eliminated the possibility of that from happening when he implemented the nuclear option in the Senate. There can be zero holds on any appointees other than Supreme Court Nominations.

When will we get this chance??

When will we get this chance again??? This is huge we can get bipartisan support on this make the calls, fax in, emails, whatever it takes! Slam the phone lines! Lets win this!

Thank you Rand!

This is the best opportunity in the near future

If it doesn't happen now, we'll have to wait until Republicans take control of Senate which may not happen til 2016.

Daily Paul used to keep Ron's bill stickied as the first post on the front page. I'm not sure what's changed. Rand is pushing a bill Ron has been trying to get passed for decades and we are VERY close to getting a Senate vote but it seems like the enthusiasm for this has been completely lost.

2 questions

1. Where is it in the rules/parliamentary-procedue listings that Rand can put the hold on this?

2. I would have also thought that a bill passed by a previous congress would not still have bills on the desk of the Senate?

Answers

1. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senate_hold

A hold just requires Reid to find 60 votes to invoke cloture (end debate). 44 Senators are on the record of supporting Audit the Fed so we have enough support to force a vote. People need to call their Senators though and make sure they stick with Rand.

2. The House passed bill from the 112th Congress is not on the desk of the Senate. If the Senate passes Rand's bill, the House will need to pass the Senate bill or the House's own bill (HR 24).

Letter Rand wrote to Harry Reid today

Nice Letter

I wonder whether it would have been too much to bring up Reid's debate promise, to his constituents when running for re-election, that he supported a Fed audit.

This will be a good move.

Brings attention to the issue and forces a vote to see where the Senate stands. I don't think the Senate ever got to vote on Ron's proposal.

It runs an end around the leadership of both parties.

Read the comments. Why would

Read the comments. Why would anyone not want to audit the fed? I don't get it. Who are these people?

Yah, they make me sick as well. Either they are loyal water carrying statists, or paid to fight any sort of conservatism or transparency. I think likely both scenarios.

Isn't it the same as Ron

Isn't it the same as Ron Paul's HR 459?

see here

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2013/10/rand-paul-grand...

"It should be noted that Rand Paul's audit of the Fed is not a call for an audit by a major accounting firm for an audit conducted under GAAP rules, or anything close to GAAP rules, but an "audit" by the Comptroller General to the Congress. This is like having Bernie Madoff's brother audit his brother's accounts. Who knows what crazy and wild directions such an "audit" would go? I'll tell you where it won't go. It won't look into the detail of the gold holdings listed as part of Fed release H.4.1 The H.4.1 section 1, fraudulently lists "Gold stock" as $11,041 million (The gold stock is valued monthly at $42.2222 per fine troy ounce.), but the Fed owns no gold. As later stated in section 8 of H.4.1, the Fed holds "gold certificates," not gold."

Yes

and it's something Ron has been advocating for over 30 years.
