Ron Paul Channel:Impact of the New NSA Center: 1.7 Million Gallons of Water a DAY Used. (Recycled QCSR?

1.7 Million gallons a day of water, just to cool the cursed computers that are spying on everyone! Because the video did not make clear whether the water was recycled or not, that question is up for debate. However, I still affirm that it is a tremendous misuse of water either way.

The violation of the Fourth Amendment is the "Marie Antoinette" cake, Ron Paul explains the 'burnt cake' of the environmental impact.

NOT recycled most likely

I'm a mechanical engineer with data center design experience. It is not out of the question that this million gallon per day number is "non recycled" make up water for the cooling towers. A data center of this size most likely has an open loop cooling tower rejecting heat from closed loop chillers. Evaporative losses can easily be over a million per day.

Misleading

A closed-loop water cooling system on a personal computer can pump over 3 gallons per minute -- which is meaningless since the water is being reused just to transfer heat. Somebody who had a closed loop system like this might impress his friends by saying that "my computer is cooled by 4000 gallons of water a day." It doesn't mean that you have a swimming pool worth of water dedicated to cooling your PC. The NSA center is cooled by 1.7 million gallons, which is equivalent to 425 personal computers, which is not that impressive.

Not Quite

The closed loop cooling systems cooling the data center are much more than 3 gpm. Common evaporator coil flow rates are 2.4 gpm per ton of cooling, and this building will require 10s of thousands of tons of cooling.

But this water is not part of the evaporator side of the cooling, its on the condenser side ( the side which rejects heat from the inside closed loops to outside into the atmosphere). Without getting too technical, the condenser loop is most likely open to atmosphere with a cooling tower utilizing heat of vaporization for more efficient cooling. That evaporated water needs to be replaced by fresh water. And it can get substantial.

Thank you for the information:

this was linked from the Ron Paul Channel. I agree, if the water is being recycled, Ron Paul should have made this more clear.

What a crock! Very misleading.

What do they do after 1.7 M gallons of water cool the computers for a day... toss it out? It is most likely recirculated from its 1.7 M gallon holding tank. This post gets one big down vote from me for pure unadulterated sensationalized BS.

I believe it's 1.7 Million a day and the water is not

recirculated. Kind of how nuclear power plants have cooling towers, it goes into the air.

Looks like liberty lovers ought to start monkeywrenching!

So you think computers get hot enough to vaporize water?

I have a hard time believing that the water isn't in a closed loop and that it would get hot enough to even come close to boiling. I'll bet it's a 5000 gallon holding tank and the 1.7 million figure is the total daily volume run through the pumps. Besides, water doesn't go away or go bad when it's used.
In fact, somebody should liven up the report and say, "NSA uses 1.7 million gallons of billion-years-old water"

Sure, I believe water evaporates.

We're not talking about 10,000 personal computers being used here. This is a massive data center with lots and lots of equipment that most likely get a tad bit warmer than your typical laptop.

This water could also be used to cool the facilities. Out West here we use "Swamp Coolers" to keep our homes cool. When I was living off the grid and had to haul water to my property, my swamp cooler was using 150 gallons of water a day to cool my 100 Sq. Ft. RV

I don't believe this is a closed loop system, but I could be wrong. If it is, it's going to be a lot more than a 5000 gallon holding tank!

My money is on cooling towers like nuclear power plants use, LOTS of evaporation

They could set up a botteling plant right adjacent to the NSA

facility and make NSA water. LOL

thanks for the enlightenment on that one, MikeLawson

I may just edit the post for this!

Without a lot of rain or a major river nearby

The NSA must be tapped into an underground source that is drawing up a HUGE amount of this very limited, vital element. How is the aquifer for that entire desert region affected? Will they burn themselves out for lack of foresight on this one thing?

I am on a well and live near

I am on a well and live near the center and during the summer the water table drops to the point we ran out of water for a week and they had to send out a crew to blow everything out and put in a deeper pipe. For people on city water they were handing out notices that residents are not allowed to water their lawns during August becuase the water issue is so bad.

But this center is somehow allowed to use huge amount while us serfs pay the price for it...

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

Water, Water everywhere...but not a drop to drink....

What a tremendous waste of water, actually a criminal misuse of ti.
