People Like To Believe BullshltSubmitted by BILL3 on Thu, 11/07/2013 - 00:05
People like to believe bullshit for all sorts of reasons. Well then, let's look at them.
People like to believe bullshit when it allows them to attach their own personal ego to a greater ego. By affirming the lies of the greater ego they feel puffed up and bigger.
For example, many people melded their own small ego into Obama's giant ego, for whatever base reason (god knows there are many). After that, they were committed to his lies. For his part, he lied for his own reasons without regard for their squalid reasons. He's a sociopath, after all, and lies for his own reasons.
People like to believe bullshit if they feel it ingratiates them with someone in power above them, or if they think it will redound to their benefit. The initial act of dishonesty may be conscious, but it is often immediately transmuted into the subconscious and bullshit becomes truth for them.
In a hierarchical environment, people will often adopt the official line of bullshit out of sheer fear and insecurity at the idea of being at odds with authority. In other cases, it is a more cynical and malicious investment in bullshit to "toe to line," knowing what side one's bread is buttered on.
People like to innocently believe bullshit about themselves, if it plays to their vanity. Some people merely appreciate bullshit about themselves because it is a polite gesture, and know it to be bullshit. That is merely good manners. But some believe the bullshit about themselves even though they knew beforehand it was bullshit and didn't believe it themselves. But when someone says positive bullshit about them, they then believe it because their vanity is actually the "modesty that dare not speak its name." Not knowing what they are, or having any firm bearings, they adopt the beliefs proffered about themselves by others, positive or negative.
People like to believe comforting bullshit, about particular things and or in general. This is wishful thinking. For example, if someone lies to their parents, telling them what they want to believe, like "everything is fine" even if it isn't, the parents will often be inclined to believe the lie as long there is no overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Bullshit is often the path of least resistance.
Likewise, when it comes to ideology, religion, or otherwise, the belief most congenial and comforting is often the one adopted, because all things being equal, why not?
Some truths are just too horrific and discomfiting to be adopted, absent overwhelming evidence and a sizable cohort of peers adopting that same awful belief. That is part of what revolutions are made of. Those too are often built on the bullshit fabricated by others to implement a consciousness phase shift to augment the revolution.
Revolutionary bullshit is often adopted as a belief when a tottering structure that is no longer capable of supporting the interests of a its myriad hangers on topples and all the rats need to scramble for a new truth to hang onto for their daily bread.
In all honesty, devotion to truth against all other considerations is more of a malady and pathology than anything else. It may be a guilty little pleasure and a vice, a self indulgent pleasure, but it offers little in the way of practical advantage or utility to real people. We're really messed up!
People also like to believe bullshit if they have a negative self image, they like to think the worst of others' attitude toward themselves, accurately or not. Thus, paranoia about others' opinions, motives and intentions toward oneself.
People like to believe bullshit about factual notions like history, science or math to stoke their intellectual vanity, imagining they know or understand more than they do. They will watch Nat Geo or the history channel, or youtube, where some bullshit was hawked in a 30 minute travesty and will thenceforth fancy themselves experts on whatever bullshit subject was treated.
People like to believe bullshit if they've devoted themselves personally to a particular ideological commitment which gives them a sense of value, uniqueness or superiority.
Hell, everything I just said is probably bullsh1t.
