What is so interesting about you that you're worth spying on?

Serious question. I stole it from the first chapter of Jaron Lanier's new book, Who Owns the Future?

We all know that the NSA is spying on us. But he's not talking about the NSA, bur rather the cookies. There are as many as 17 trackers on this site alone, as an alert DPer pointed out. This is news to me. It is not me who is doing that tracking, but likely Google, and those other guys - the loathesome bikini advertisers. They're all watching you from the Cloud. They are the eye in the sky, wherever you go, across the World Wide Web.

But why? To return to Lanier's question, What is so interesting about you that you're worth spying on?

Lanier continues:

The cloud is driven by statistics, and even in the worst individual cases of personal ignorance, dullness, idleness or irrelevance, every person is constantly feeding data into the cloud these days. The value of such information could be treated as genuine, but it is not. Instead, the blindness of our standards of accounting to all that value is gradually breaking capitalism.

I could continue typing, but I would risk copyright infringement, and further, it would blow your mind / bore you to tears / make you scoff at how ridiculous you think it is, depending on how you are predisposed toward thinking about the current technology revolution that we're living through.

So let's wait on that for now and ponder the question: What is so interesting about you that you're worth spying on?

I'm just gonna assume the question is for someone else not me.

I mean if you have to ASK....

I actually gave thoughts about this, besides my main counter argument against the reckless opinion of some apathetic people, i.e., that one which usually goes along the line of "meh, I don't mind to be spied on, because I have nothing wrong to hide anyway, etc"

(... to which my take is naturally "Oh, yeah, really? Well, problem is, what makes you think you will always have your word to say and to be considered about what is deemed 'wrong' or not (regarding anything about you) once you've allowed that to happen 24/7 against you, fool?")

It's of course quite speculative, but knowing a bit the nature of the collectivist plunder, I seriously suspect that a likely main motivation is most simply about the immoral gathering of data for that single, very trivial purpose:

their comprehensive knowledge of every single individual's actual income, spending habits, and business acquaintances (not to mention everything related to one's health status, issues, ...) readily available to be entered in the tyrants' spreadsheets of centrally planned, organized, future plunder.

As simple as that, I'm afraid.

LoL! Michael it is because I have

the answers.

Now they and everyone else need to ask the right question.

Want domination, love, a great sex life. It is ALL about the right questions. TPTB are looking. Just like each of us. They are looking, but also, have NEVER asked the right question!

The answer will be given soon. But NOT before being given the right question. This is where our world is, at this point in history. It is not the answer but the QUESTION that is important!

A thought just occurred to me

A good way to test the new stealth email and browsing systems will be to type in certain specific things multiple tes and see if ads relating to those things pop up. Just don't use bikinis or Kaley Cuoco because those seem to show up regardless. Maybe keep googling or emailing about Newt Gingrich and see if you get ads for Geritol and Depends.

Anything "They" can use against you.

would do the same. Sad part is I had that look back in the day. Along with 7 inch platforms and bell sleeves. Damn, still have nightmares. My mother, bless her at 75 still has the platforms in the attic.

I love this "game"

and I'm sure that if we all played along we could really screw with "their" heads.
I have never bought into facebook, nor any smart technology. I ditched my credit cards years ago and pay cash for everything. I never buy on line, or do internet banking. I write letters, and hardly ever e-mail. I hardly ever txt on my old mobile phone, and don't keep contacts in my phone.
I don't fill out questionnaires, censes forms or give any personal information.
If "they" search what I google "they" will find the UN, World Bank, IMF, ICLEI, Worlds water, Vaccinations, Zionism and other things of that ilk.
"They" will also know that I am a member of the Daily Paul, something I am proud to be associated with.

I now know an awful lot about you...

What samadamscw said below.

WE are not what's interesting, the power over us that spying/tracking/recording gives them, that is what is so interesting. Information that can be used against you to manipulate you to alter your decision making process and actions. They are the strings the puppet master uses to make you dance. Without those strings of information, what power does he have over you?

One word Advertising.

Advertising of the targeted kind. I am going to block all the ad sites on here as I noticed when I responded to a post about solar power, every site I visit now has an ad for solar power. The advertisers are not only setting cookies here I suspect their embedded scripts are also searching our content we post. I would suspect if I did a search on google I would be hit with such targeted advertising but not based on a post I made.

That's amazing! I pick my nose with my toes.

Sometimes other peoples toes also, when they are sleeping. Maybe this is why the NSA is spying on me!

Just kidding. I don't really pick my nose with my toes. That's what elbows are for.

If you love and spread truth of any kind you are a target to watch for those who want you deceived.

The most valuable information

is probably everyone's political persuasion, or possible political persuasion.

God forgives always. Man forgives sometimes. But Nature never forgives.

The value in spying on you has nothing to do with you.

It has to do with power over you.

It is all about power.

The purpose of mass spying is to engineer voluntary compliance with every dictate they dream up each morning.

All they need to do, is be able to pull up any fact on you they want, retroactively declare that fact evidence of illegal activity, (or merely suggest you being 'subversive') and BLAMO! You will comply because if you don't, you'll be an example to scare the shit out of everyone else into complying.

You don't need to be "hiding" anything, or be interesting. In fact, the more "mundane" and "normal" you are, the more otherwise "legal" you are, the better. Because that way, ALL of the mundane and normal people, when they see YOU being beaten, tasered, tortured, renditioned, and even executed on live television, will be scared to the point of empty bowels - because if that happened to you and you were "normal" that means it could happen to them too.

THAT is how you get full voluntary compliance with tyranny.

It works EVERY TIME.

America will be no exception, and already is proving it is not.

There will be no revolution. It already happened and we lost.

You will comply, or you will die, and your death will be used to engender more compliance, not more resistance.

i disagree with your last statement

i think their abuse of the abuse of power will ultimately be their undoing.

I use private msg. a lot in facebook

I can talk about motorcycles or cake and then ads show up for local bakeries and motorcycle shops.

I also know that some of the people I msg. with are being watched by FBI. Someone I was msg. with was talking about family pictures a certain person was talking about and later that night the FBI came to that person's home (the one with all the family pics) and took their computer. Nothing serious is on their computer, but FBI is trying to intimidate these people. This happened this past week. The person is very upset that they may not get these pics back again. It may be a long while before they get the computer back, if they ever do.

A few thoughts:

Firstly, to answer your question: I'm so predictable and boreing I must be hiding something ! Right ?

Secondly, how can Google and it's counterparts trace or gather data if their code isn't located on your servers to do so? I find it difficult to believe that such data transfer can be accomplished off site, or through third party coding. To me, and I openly admit I'm not a techie, it only makes sense if they have a means in place through code on the DP servers: perhaps John should do a line by line examination of the architecture here and purge them?

Thirdly: have a wonderful day, and thanks for birthing this forum.

It's a double edged sword

Needed to chime in about this situation. For a domain and website owner all these 3rd party links can be actually good for the direct website it's self. The more links and meta tag words floating in the cloud from your site, the more the spiders, crawlers and search engines will see it.

For example I was searching the other day for something totally irrelevant to what is discussed here at the DP. To my surprise the DP came up in my search engine as number one. Someone had uttered the keyword a few times in a page that received a lot of hits so it ended up ranking first in the search.(no it was not in my cookies)

So for this reason all these links and ties to the cloud can be a huge booster for a website or domain's ranking. And and as we know ranking is an asset of value for the owner. So in a way they do indeed pay off in the long run even if you don't actually click on the ads themselves.

If I disappear from a discussion please forgive me. My 24-7 business requires me to split mid-sentence to serve them. I am not ducking out, I will be back later to catch up.

Individually, most of us are

Individually, most of us are not very interesting at all. We are just humans, with all the standard imperfections. From a central planners perspective, each of us could be considered an economic unit. Detailed analysis of each component allows you to optimize the whole for maximum output.

Consider the problems from a dairy farmers perspective. An individual cow is pretty dang boring, a herd of cows is a cash machine. If you can gather specific data on each cow in a herd, head off problems before they get too bad, you can optimize and tweak for best output.

Of course humans are far more complicated than a cow, so you have to scrutinize them a lot more closely in order to properly "manage" them. You need to get in their OODA loop. Run predictive algorithms and really get to know what makes them tick. Can't just let the cattle wander around aimlessly after all...

The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. - Heinlein

Great question!! (edit)

From an objective perspective about what is so interesting about me is what I do with my money.

I just read the posts below and had a thought, about when people meet, one of the first things people want to know about each other is "Where do you work" IOWs "what is your source?"

What's so interesting about

What's so interesting about you or me? Money! How any given product or service might connect with a buyer at the exact time it is needed. I've never found an advertisement alone incentive enough to purchase something...beyond food.
