Newsweek: What's the NSA Going to Do With Your Data?

By Kevin Maney / November 08 2013 10:05 AM

We are all Angela Merkel.

Today, the National Security Agency can tap the German chancellor's phone, monitor her electronic activity and use computer analysis to attempt to figure out whether she's plotting to undermine American monetary policy at the next EU Summit or just planning to go home to make Mettwurst and cabbage.

Soon, Walmart or Amazon, or another large entity is going to be able to vacuum up large volumes of data about you, spin it through predictive analytics, and know with great certainty that because you just bought Pop-Tarts, light bulbs, and paper towels you are about to have a baby - before you know. They'll send you an offer for Pampers before the dot on the pregnancy test turns blue.

You should see the stuff that

You should see the stuff that Big Data Analytics can do. Crazy stuff. Plus the things that government agencies and contractors have the private Big Data companies do. Some of it is very useful, relevant scientific analytics; other projects- not so much. Then when you get into the private sector data mining, it's just insane. The other notable part of this industry is that there are many Big Data companies that do most of their analytics overseas. I wonder constantly, is this potentially a security breach?

The tech industry is rapidly growing where I live, and many of us work for these kinds of companies, or our tech employer does business with them. I constantly encounter situations that make me think about the bigger picture... Is this a good thing? Will this potentially violate privacy? Do people know what information about them is out there?

Overall, I think that it is a great technology, but we are going to have to learn how to keep it in check and protect privacy. And there are just some things (like peoples' private lives) that should just be left alone. This will not happen until more people become aware of what information they are giving away and how it is being used.

So far I have found the ads I

So far I have found the ads I get to be rather lack luster. In a few cases I get suggestions for stuff I have already bought which doesnt do me much good since I already bought it. Other times, I get suggestions for stuff that really doesnt concern me very much and isnt anything I care about.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

I find the same, but just

I find the same, but just wait. This technology is still in its infancy in the private sector. They have been finding new ways to utilize the data in elections as well. 2016 will be very interesting.

Rest assured that there are deals in the works to get the GOP up to speed on this technology. They have a lot of ground to cover to make up for lost time, but we are all trying to light a fire under their arses' over here.
