New 3-D Printer Makes Ladies Panties by the Millions

By ALAN FARNHAM

In what undergarment observers call a first, a 3D printer has produced a pair of lady's panties—in three seconds, no less. The day when you'll be able to walk into a store and, minutes later, walk out wearing a custom-made, 3D-printed suit is not far off, says one expert.

Melba Kurman, co-author with Hod Lipson of "Fabricated: The New World of 3D Printing," tells ABC News she thinks there's no reason why in five years a man couldn't walk into, say, Brooks Brothers, get scanned by a computer, and then come back in a few hours to pick up a bespoke 3D-printed suit.

"But that's not pushing the limits," she says of 3D printing technology, which already is being used to make everything from shower heads to key chains.

The real sea change comes

The real sea change comes when those workers can get their own 3dprinters and print their own stuff.

Great

..as long as all those slave shops making clothing go under in third world countries.

I'm sure the workers will not agree with you

Pretty heartless of you.

Your best option was to work in a sweat shop. So guess what, we're taking that away too.

Mr. Ludd, is that you?

Asked and answered 3 inches down.

It's one thing to be pro technology, accepting that there will be economic dislocation as a result of it, because capital stocks will be enhanced thereby.

It's quite another to cheer on the misery. It's also ignorant to think that in a highly regulated and planned market that these people will simply be able to find another income stream. They don't live in a free market. Nor do we for that matter. If you lost your job today you would not be free to simply get another job. You would have to beg permission from the state to be able to work in some other field. For them it;s worse.

I didn't say 3d printers are a bad thing. I said it's heartless and ignorant to cheer people losing the best jobs they had available.

Yep

Just want the people there to be free.

You sound like a Luddite.

donvino

To you, making their lives worse makes them 'free'?

I'm always pro technology, and inasmuch as a market is free, productivity advances will help everyone over time on net.

But there are dislocations that are felt, and it will be hard on people whose best available option was working in a factory to have that swept out form under them. Losing those jobs won't make them any more or less free, but it will certainly make them poorer.

It's also not like they have a free market. They have a very regimented economy and they can't turn around and be entrepreneurs in market with any real profit potential without state permission.

To them these are good jobs.

It's economically naive and heartless to cheer on the situation where they lose them, just as cheering when anyone gets put out of work. In the scheme of things their privation will likely mean everyone is better off on the whole.

We don't keep people making buggy whips just because.

But it will be privation, and a lot more so than buggy whip makers who lived in a much more free economy.

Then how...

...have they lived and survived in those areas for hundreds of years before those sweatshops appeared there?

They probably lived longer and healthier than they do now imo. If they lose an arm or foot they probably get the equivalent of a basket of fruit.

Btw the child labor is not a good situation either.

Perhaps they will cultivate some kind of crop or other product that will be much more beneficial and more lucrative to trade.

donvino

Just like you survived before the internet

And who cares about your opinion? You certainly don't seem to care about THEIR opinion as represented by the choice they actually made.

Sure they can do whatever they did before, maybe. But this was their best available option in THEIR opinion.

Child labor isn't good, except compared to child starvation or child prostitution. Which become their best options when you deny them ability to work. You think their parents don't give a crap? Did Americans not give a crap when children had to work on subsistemce farms to survive? Or when they sent them to factories because they could earn more in a factory than they could produce on a farm?

They cared. They just weren't productive enough yet NOT to have to have their children working. You would keep them in the situations they are trying to avoid and thus impede them from building the capital so they can have successively better off generations.

Birth of the Replicator?

In Star Trek a replicator is a machine capable of creating (and recycling) objects. Replicators were originally seen used to synthesize meals on demand, but in later series they took on many other uses; spare parts, Starfleet uniforms, as well as everyday objects such as toys and souvenirs.(wiki)

Edible?

On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.
