ADHD/ADD: The War On Children

This is in response to FreedomLover2012's post.

I love to learn! As a child as well as a teenager, I didn't like school. The last thing I wanted to do is sit in a room and listen to someone cram information into a structured time frame. I wanted to investigate the world and build things. Hike in the woods and learn about nature. Take a lawn mower or a VCR apart and see how it works. Like lots of people, I have a creative and curious mind.

I am also a victim of the public school system and ADHD.

As a kindergartener, I remember the teachers claiming that I had horrible vision and that I need glasses. Their proof was that I squinted to see the chalk board. Every time I went to the eye doctor, they said I had perfect vision. This is still a fact today. I do not wear or need eye glasses for short or long distance sight.

What was that? That was the public school system claiming they knew what was best for me. This is the reason why I believe that the public school systems are the salespeople for pharmaceutical drugs.

When I was around nine years old and in fourth grade, the same thing happened. The teachers and the public schools claimed to know that I had ADHD and that I needed to be looked at by a doctor. I was put through academic tests as well as medical tests. I remember them taking my blood a few times. I felt like a test animal. I was put on Ritalin and I had to take one pill in the morning and one during school at lunch. The school made a big deal about taking medication. It felt like a psych ward. I was segregated from class to take tests and the teachers made it public that I was "special" and often sat next to me to read the questions out loud like I was not capable of doing it myself. It was a horrible experience.

When I reached the age of eleven and in sixth grade, I decided that the medication was not for me. I first try to explain why by saying "I don't feel like myself", but it got nowhere. The doctors and the public schools insisted that I continue taking it. At first, my rebellion against the medication was quiet. I would grab the pills in the morning and throw it down the sewer while waiting for the bus. I'd pretend to take the medication at lunch but then throw it away. The constant class segregation and being treated like I had no intelligence got to me. I started to speak up and rebel against the schools and the doctors. I made it clear that as long as they demanded that I take the medication and as long as the treat me like I had no brain, I would not participate in any school activities. That is exactly what I did. I did no schoolwork, homework, class projects, etc.

At first, they came down on me like a ton of bricks. After a few years, they gave up. I left the public school system at age sixteen with four high school credits. Those credits were in classes like gym and art.

Do not be mistaken, I do have a high school diploma. I graduated at age sixteen. I went off to a school that did all their classes on computer at your own pace. I earned eighteen credits in eight months. I graduated with twenty two out of twenty one required credits. They were not in the business of forcing people to take drugs.

My parents were very understanding in the decisions that I made through this tough time.

According to PBS:
There's a suit going on right now in three states. It alleges that the major pharmaceutical company that makes Ritalin, the Novartis Company, along with the American Psychiatric Association, the main representatives of organized medicine in the ADHD movement, and the self-help group CHADD have conspired to dupe the American public into believing that there's such a thing as ADHD, and then thrust upon innocent children a potentially dangerous drug.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/medicating/exp...

What is CHADD? They handle plans for schools with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD. I was on a 504 plan:
Section 504 - A great place to begin, this page will help you understand what Section 504 is and how it may help your child.
https://www.chadd.org/.....

My thinking as an eleven year old in sixth grade was correct. Take a look at these charts from the CDC:

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db70_fig2.png

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db70_fig1.png

These charts show a uptrend in children diagnosed with ADHD. Ask yourself, who is to benefit from an increase of sales of medication for ADHD?

Some kid who just started

Some kid who just started working at my work and has ADHD, thats what I was told anyhow by his family. His dad owns a multimillion dollar boat building company and does not want him working there so he came to work for us.He is one of the best workers I have seen in a while and very polite. adhd is a scam by doctors and lazy parents who dont know how to teach.

What Are You Doing Differently With the Kid ?

Sounds like he's doing well with you. Does he like working there ? How is his confidence now ? I bet your attitude that ADHD is b.s. and that there's nothing 'wrong' with the young man has helped him tremendously.

A friend of mine (who has passed away) was diagnosed as 'slow' when he was young. This was quite a few years ago. He felt bad as a kid, but he was a mechanical genius. He ended up working as a machinist at the Experimental Aircraft division at Boeing. The engineers would come to him when they couldn't figure out a difficult problem. He was also an inventor and worked as a consultant for many companies. He was a master machinist, welder, millwright, inventor, designer of electronic equipment, and programmer of computerized manufacturing tools. Thankfully, he was in school before the time when ADHD/ADD pill pushing was in style. He told me that they likely would have put him on medications because he was bored silly in school. He could hardly stand being stuck in a classroom.

(In Full: http://www.americanpatriotparty.cc/Locke_Civil_Government/lo...)

John Locke #118. "But it is plain governments themselves (APP: in 1698 and as it should be) understand it otherwise; they claim "NO POWER" over the son because of that they had over the father;

NOR look on children as being their "subjects" (i.e, citizens), by their fathers being so.

If a subject of England have a child by an Englishwoman in France, whose subject is he?

Not the King of England's; for he must have leave to be admitted to the privileges of it. Nor the King of France's, for how then has his father a liberty to bring him away, and breed him as he pleases;

and whoever was judged as a traitor or deserter, if he left, or warred against a country, for being barely born in it of parents that were aliens there? " (i.e. "NO ONE")

"It is plain, then, by "the practice of governments themselves",

as well as by "THE LAW OF RIGHT REASON", (COMMON LAW)

that a child is born a subject of "NO COUNTRY NOR GOVERNMENT."

He is under his "FATHERS" tuition and authority till he come to age of discretion, and then he is a FREE MAN, at LIBERTY what government he will put himself under, what body politic he will unite himself to...."

Question for home schooling parents with ADHD kids

Did your child's ADHD symptoms go away once you started home schooling?

Ours didn't.

Public school is not the cause. Kids still exhibit similar behavior even in the much better home school environments. I think public school highlights the issues more and makes the symptoms more difficult to deal with. At least that's how it worked for us.

We also tried diet changes (gluten free, etc.). The results in our son's behavior/symptoms were very minor compared to the relatively large impact on the family budget and routine for the dietary changes.

His prescribed meds (Intuniv and Focalin) however do help and do not appear to affect his personality, inquisitiveness, imagination, etc. They do affect his appetite though, but lately his appetite has been awesome so we're happy he is finally adding some pounds (he'll still always be very small for his age though). He also shows signs of OCD, sensory, and anxiety disorder symptoms too so we deal with many issues beyond just ADHD symptoms.

I used to discount ADHD as a pharma/psych over-diagnosis thing, but after having lived with a child who obviously has many of the symptoms the evidence tells me it is a real disorder. The cause of which I don't know... but it's not imaginary.

For those who say there is no measurable physical test for ADHD I understand. I will give an anecdote about my daughter - it took many doctors about 2 years to finally diagnose my daughter's disorder. She went through all kinds of tests for Hershbrung's (sp?) syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, etc., etc. Only after they finally gave up and did a $30k genetic screening did they find she had pneumococcal immune deficiency. The lesson I think is that our ability to test and find root causes often lags behind identifying the symptoms. The ADHD meds affect brain chemistry and are shown to relieve symptoms... that indicates that the symptoms are caused by some kind of physiological chemical imbalance... does it not?

I'm sure I'll get bashed as usual on this topic, but I just wanted to get our experiences out there as another reference point.

Long Run

I dont question that there is such a thing as ADHD. My question is what is better in the long run?

Stimulants are habit forming. The long term effects are also incompletely quantified. They do raise blood pressure. Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of people in this country. What happens when the kids grow up and develop high blood pressure and then have a medical contra-indication to stimulant use?

How will they be able to function then as adults who have never learned how to cope without stimulants flowing through the blood stream?

I feel for you. it is difficult. but I question whether giving stimulants is best in the long term.

Youre a parent - no bashing from this quarter

You're trying to do what's best for your child.

Where some of us have a real argument, is with the so-called 'professionals' in this field. In our opinion, their whole approach is suspect. The following article gets into this broader concern that not only impacts 'ADHD' but the entire range of psychiatric 'disorders':

All the best to you.

Federal government is the root of problems for ADHD kids

Treubig,

Congratulations on striving to make the best of a bad situation. As a psychologist who specializes in ADHD, I can tell you from personal and professional experience that ADHD is real, but the Federal government screws things up for these kids.

1. High-stakes testing in Bush's No Child Left Behind have created an incentive for school districts to push for more kids to be diagnosed and put on meds in order to increase test scores.

2. Busy pediatricians who are paid by government-inspired healthcare plans often over-diagnose based on teacher ratings without a thorough history or testing.

3. Special testing of which you complain is ostensibly designed as part of the 504 plan to increase the child's chance of success. In reality, however, schools often are more interested in increasing test scores by altering test administration for these kids.

4. Government-inspired health insurance pays for medication, but Congress has long ignored Ron Paul's pleas for tax-exempt alternative healthcare. Consequently, middle class kids tend to receive pills and little else.

5. In contrast, ADHD kids from wealthy families learn coping skills, obtain working memory training and attend sophisticated special needs schools where the curriculum is designed to meet their needs. These kids struggle with ADHD just as middle-class kids do, but the system works for them, so their lives are often less stressful.

Daily Paul members should never forget that the Federal government is the root of many problems in our society. Diagnosis and treatment of ADHD is only one small example.

I don't know if you were diagnosed correctly. However, your horrible experience with the public schools is similar to that of many ADHD kids.

It really does get better after you leave school. I wish you every success as you move forward in your life.

‘Each individual is separated from others by a "taboo of personal isolation"...this "narcissism of minor differences"'
--Sigmund Freud

You're not a physician so your diagnosis is by committee . .

DSM listing of behaviors.

What physical lab test is there for ADHD ? Where does it manifest in an X ray or other physical instrument ? Answer - 'it' doesn't.

ADHD is 'real' because the psychology biz defines certain behaviors that way ? The profession needs a course in physical evidence & logic.

There are many reasons why children might manifest certain behaviors - including being locked up in a mind numbing 'education' system, diet, allergies, physical environmental factors, life at home, etc. This does happen to people. That does Not mean they have a 'condition' 'illness' or 'malady' that requires chemical 'medications', however. It doesn't mean that they should be labeled as 'ADHD kids' or look at themselves that way. - Look broader than the borders of your own profession's paradigms.

Psychology/psychiatry is in Big Pharma's back pocket and now they're pill pushers.

Hopefully, you're one of the good guys and don't follow in lockstep with the rest of that gang. Your post suggests that, to a large extent, this may be the case.

Thank you for the compliment.

Thank you for the compliment.

For physical evidence, consider the PET scan studies done during the last 20 years. For additional evidence, try Google Scholar. Russell Barkley does a nice job of explaining the reliability, validity and explanatory power of ADHD; underlying mechanisms and multimodal treatment.

Always remember that in issues as diverse as fiat dollars, foreign affairs and the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, the federal government is often in there messing things up.

‘Each individual is separated from others by a "taboo of personal isolation"...this "narcissism of minor differences"'
--Sigmund Freud

Wrong . . . PET scans are inconclusive (to be kind) & not even

used for 'diagnosis' on a day-to-day basis anyway.

There is far too little space to get into all the flaws regarding the use of PET scans for numerous mental 'disorders'.
It is a matter of cause and effect. IF PET scans show certain types
of activity, is that due to a 'brain disorder' or is it another cause which may show up on a scan ?

Do you homework . . . outside the box.
I wasn't giving you a compliment - - - rather holding back judgement.

You point the finger at the federal government, but don't look into how the psychiatry/psychology field changed when Big Pharma came into the picture ?

Excellent post

I had a horrible time with school and can relate to what you went through. I would NEVER want to go back and do it again.

Legal warning in Ritalin packaging: Methylphenidate...

There is an important distinction between cocaine and methylphenidate (branded as Ritalin ™) :: Cocaine, when given intravenously, gives a very quick rise in the blockade of the dopamine transporter and then a very quick de-blockade of the dopamine transporter. In contrast, methylphenidate, when given intravenously, there is a very slow tail off of the medication. It does not unblock the transporter as quickly as cocaine. It is very important in terms of abuse liability because the cocaine user can get another high very quickly by taking another hit of cocaine. The methylphenidate abuser ca not do that because they have to wait until the dopamine transporter is unblocked before they can re-experience that rush of blocking the dopamine transporter. ...

A Different Opinion.

I work with ADHD teens and young adults and am the step parent of an ADHD 8 year old.

My work entails bringing our students into the wilderness for 3 week adventure trips. Some use medication others do not.

ADHD is very real. It is also very over diagnosed and the medications are over prescribed and abused.

If our son was not taking his ADHD medication he would hate school, be in trouble constantly, and then turn into a depressed mess lacking any positive self-esteem.

By using his medication he is able to be quiet long enough for other students to answer, have the ability to sit still for more than 2 minutes and the ability to actually focus on his work to get it finished.

He loves to learn both at home and at school. He is not anywhere near a "zombie" and his teacher just told us she is so glad the medication helps him in school and he still has all of his personality.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

And you got lucky

My brother not so much. His three months on the drug caused him to stop doing any type of physical activity and opt to sleep instead. To this day he is the same way. When necessary chores are done he sleeps. The change was night and day from the first day on the drug.

ADHD is not real . . . .

like most of the 'maladies' defined by psychiatry/psychology and declared in DSMIV and now DSM 5. They vote on what they want to include. Homosexuality used to be on their list, now it is not - the political & cultural climate changed. Doesn't that strike anyone as a bit strange for a so-called 'science' ? Psychiatry was losing the respect of people around the 1970s, and losing patients. Big Pharma told the psychiatrists that they would provide money to support their publications and conferences and rebuild their prestige - if they agreed to remake psychiatry (which used to be based on talking on a couch) with a pharma approach. So that's what happened.

The indication of real disease in the body is that there is physical evidence for it - not just that they were voted in by a committee. There is no medical test for ADHD. No lab tests can give a positive diagnosis as with pneumonia, for example. A doctor can't look at a slide of a culture through a microscope and say "Yes, the patient has ADHD."

Some young people respond rationally to the mind and soul numbing environment of public 'schooling'. They want nothing to do with it. They can't sit still (an un natural state for a youngster), while they are being crushed by that system designed to dumb them down and destroy their natural independent thinking and creativity.
Just because a child displays certain behaviors doesn't mean he has a 'disease' or 'malady'. Only physical diseases respond to physical substances such as chemical medications.

If you're a product of this 'schooling' system its very likely that you've been indoctrinated to believe what 'authorities' tell you. Teachers & parents don't mind at all that the kid (usually a boy) is much easier to deal with now that he's been put on 'kiddie speed'. That later leads to other meds to counter the effects of those given earlier. The 'adults' think the kid used to do X and now he doesn't so the 'malady' must be real and the chemical they gave him must have 'cured' him. False logic. - They don't teach real logic in the 'schools' now. [Note: anyone reading this that cannot see the false logic should think carefully through it. What makes it false ?] Its also natural to defend what we've done in the past. This is even more true if we were part of the system that did this to people.

Look up the book "The Myth of Mental Illness" by Thomas Szasz and other books on this topic. Look up the articles of Jon Rappoport on the nature of medicine and the psychiatry/psychology industries. Look up NY state and NYC Teacher of the Year John Taylor Gatto and his interviews and writings on the history & true purpose of public 'schooling'. There is much more information on schooling & psychiatry out there to research for yourself. If you have the courage and independent mind to look at these things, it will shock you - and make you very angry. (Genuine justified anger is another emotion that is attacked.)

Young children are naturally curious and creative. They ask a million questions and play 'make believe'. Yet after being subjected to at least 12 years of the current 'schooling' model - most Americans don't read another single book after high school and 42% of college graduates don't read another single book after leaving university. Their intellect and natural curiosity have been smashed down. Some kids have the heart to fight that with all their might and against great odds like the young person who wrote this article. All the best to him and to all the kids and parents who have been victims of this scam.

ADD = TV, ADHD = online video gaming. Pure n simple.

ADD = TV, ADHD = online video gaming. Pure n simple. GenXers have ADD more because they did TV more than video games. GenY/millenials have ADHD because they do video games and internet more than TV. More boys have it cause boys play video games more than girls, but girls are increasingly ADHD because of iPhones.

"Cowards & idiots can come along for the ride but they gotta sit in the back seat!"

My 5 yr old son *would* be ADHD

One of my sons, who's 5, would be diagnosed with ADHD, if he were in public school. My 2 sisters, both former teachers, said as much, "If he were in kindergarten, his spirit would be beaten out of him."

THAT'S why we homeschool. To let his spirit grow and "be." It saddens me to think of all those kids whose spirit is beaten out of them through the process of public schooling or with the use of medication.

It took my 9-yr-old boy two years of homeschooling to rekindle his adventurous spirit he lost in 2 years of public school.

It does make for a somewhat chaotic household, however... ;-)

Thank you for this extremely important information. Everyone

needs to know about this!

Debbie

Great post!

And this is yet another reason why it is beyond me that any person who claims to love liberty would choose something other than homeschooling for their kids. Yes, it's a big commitment and a lot of work, but if you want to raise children who are not merely state-conditioned drones, I don't see how anything other than homeschooling will work.

The “public” school system is the most immoral and corrupt insti

"I begin with my conclusion: The “public” school system is the most immoral and corrupt institution in the United States of America today, and it should be abolished. It should be abolished for the same reason that chattel slavery was ended in the 19th century: Although different in purpose and in magnitude of harm to its victims, public education, like slavery, is a form of involuntary servitude. The primary difference is that public schools force children to serve the interests of the state rather than those of an individual master.

These are—to be sure—radical claims, but they are true, and the abolition of public schools is an idea whose time has come. It is time for Americans to reexamine—radically and comprehensively—the nature and purpose of their disastrously failing public school system, and to launch a new abolitionist movement, a movement to liberate tens of millions of children and their parents from this form of bondage." There is another side to this

There is another side to this that many have not seen. ADD medication use has become an epidemic on college campuses. I knew kids that took Adderal to cram and would stay up for days straight. I even saw a kid crush a pill up and snort it like coke before a party. What is really dangerous is that you can drink 5x as much as usual on Adderal then when it wears off you crash really hard. Its pretty messed up to see your friends so strung out. One time my buddy was tweaked so hard he was trying to smoke the resin out of a bong piece backwards and inhaling all kinds of butane just so he could calm down a little. Or when you walk in a room at 5:00 in the morning and your buddies are playing Guitar hero and grinding their teeth with glossed over eyes and huge dialated pupils. I actually met a guy that took so much adderal he never slept during the week, he would stay up 24/7 and sleep all day Sunday. This kind of thing is happening everywhere too.

Usually a kid would have "ADD" and have his parents pay for the prescription and the doctor will give him as much as he wanted. The kid would then turn around and sell them for $10 to $20 bucks each and make a killing during finals and midterms.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.
