World War One studies show mankind's instinct is for peace

this is the piece worth reading:

(The "BlackAdder" of the title was a UK BBC Comdey show centered on WWI trenches .. but is pretty much irrelevant to the content of the piece.)

What the piece shows is that, without the dedicated manipulations of central power, war would vanish. Somehow, we've been indoctrinated with the idea that war is due to some fundamental character failure of mankind. But, evidence shows the opposite. The fundamental character of mankind is Live and Let Live. Central Power has succeeded in projecting it's psychopathic character onto the whole of mankind.

Hatred of the enemy, so strenuously fostered in training days, largely faded away in the line. We somehow realized that individually they were very like ourselves, just as fed-up and anxious to be done with it all[3]

- The view from the front-line late in the war, a Tommy reminisces…

About four weeks ago about 10,000 men had a big racket at Etaples and cleared the place from one end to the other, and when the General asked what was wrong, they said they wanted the war stopped.[4]
