The Wife and I Traded in Some FRN's Today for Some Real Wealth (Updated)

I couldn't take it any longer, spot price has been below $20, the FED is going to carry on its QE to infinity and beyond in 2014, so I had to go get some more silver coins from my local dealer. This is what he had in store for me today....

Here's a listing of what you see:

- 1 oz 2013 Canadian Wood Bison
- 1 oz 2013 Canadian Pronghorn Antelope
- 1 oz 2012 Canadian Moose
- 1 oz 2012 Canadian Cougar
- 1 oz 2011 Canadian Grizzly
- 1 oz 2011 Canadian Wolf
- 1 oz 2013 Mexican Libertad (x2 front and back shown)
- 1 oz Ron Paul Campaign For Liberty
- 0.86 oz 1879 US Morgan (x2 front and back shown)
- 1 oz 2014 Australian Lunar Year of the Horse

Today was a good day. Peace and prosperity to all.

Update:

I thought I would add some charts that compare FRN's, gold and silver. How are you going to retain your wealth over your lifetime?

silver price trendline 2000 2012

gold price trendline 2000 2012

us debt gold price 2000till2010 1024x697

major currencies decline 2000till2010 1024x730

declining value of the dollar. to 2012

Please tell me why you prefer

Please tell me why you prefer to visit your local dealer instead of purchasing online? From what I have seen, the premiums on purchases online are MUCH less. So why do so many want to buy from a local dealer? If I use a money order to purchase silver from an online company, will the IRS still be able to see that transaction? Is that why you buy from local dealers? To avoid the IRS? Please educate me. thanks

DJP333's picture

Its just a personal preference

The more I get to know my dealer, to more random discounts/freebies I get. I also like looking through their selection and picking what I want, and having a discussion with them about certain coins, the future of the market and which coins have gone up in value more than others etc. I am not sure what the IRS can see in regards to money orders, however in the age of the NSA every transaction which isn't cash is recorded, so I prefer not to leave a record anywhere. If I wanted to buy just non-minted bullion, my dealer has them for $1-2 over spot, is it really much cheaper online?

I like the local idea better.

Not only do you establish a personal relationship, you are also supporting local brick & mortar, as well as saving the cost of shipping.

Hopefully others who go into the store will overhear you preaching the message of Liberty as you attempt to convert your salesperson :-)

Exactly PAF,

and every time I have been to buy some coins, I have purchased all of their Ron Pauls, so pretty sure they know where I stand there! And they are already well aware of the crappy US monetary policy and manipulation of the markets so talking liberty, less government and free markets is easy there. Its just all round a more fun experience to go into the local dealer, buy and then bring the coins home that day, rather then just a few clicks online and waiting for the package to appear in the mail.

I really must

get in the game. Those sliver pieces really do look awesome.

I've been reading up on Canadian vs Eagle gold, I'm finding out that the Canadian is actually .9999%, which is slightly higher than U.S.

May you live long and prosperous, DJP :-)

I read an article that says...

there's not much difference in .999 and .9999. Look it up. I was going for .9999 also till a read that article. Cant recall now but its out there. Here's something though...

Thanks for that link.

On a side note, some places are selling Canadian a shade cheaper, if that makes any difference in long term...?

Get in the game PAF!

Right now silver is affordable, however with all the printing and possible next crash coming up, who knows for how long. You should just ask for some coins for Christmas or something to get you started. When you have them in your hands you realize right away that this is REAL money. My wife was skeptical to begin with, but now she loves going and picking up coins when we have some extra savings to convert. May you live long and prosper too PAF!

I would suggest

going to you local dealer and starting a relationship with them. Just google "gold and silver seller near (name City you live in)". I don't like putting a record of my transaction online or with a credit card. Straight cash purchase without them getting any information from me.

I've bought from most the past several years. For a combination of price, selection, speed of delivery, website ease, etc...I like Apmex.

Check out https://comparesilverprices.com/ . Right now, some other companies have slightly lower prices on silver eagles, but Apmex is the lowest on $100 90% bags. You can also find lower prices than Apmex on Monster Boxes. Apmex though has some of the lowest prices on kilo coins. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Apmex also has a new Platinum Club for frequent buyers. Shipping is free over 5K and anything under is a flat $9.99.

Comment on US Silver Dollars

Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars are wonderful, and extremely widely collected (Morgans are probably the second most collected coin, second to the Lincoln cent). The ones that you bought look to me to be real Morgan dollars, not modern privately minted rounds with Morgan dollar designs

If they are real Morgan dollars, keep in mind that they are NOT 1 troy ounce of silver. Their pure silver content is .7734 troy ounces (they weigh about .86 ozt and they are .900 fine). If you sell them to a legit coin dealer, you will generally get a little under or a little over melt value. I don't even pay attention to melt value when I buy them in my store because they have a wholesale market value that I go by, which has commonly been a few dollars over spot.

If you paid $4 over spot for them (20+4) you are paying 8 dollars over melt and $11 over spot per pure ounce of silver (unless you paid if you paid (20+4)*.7734 that's a good deal- paying melt at spot +4, which is about $3 over melt). That said, $24 is a decent price for a Morgan dollar. That's about what I can wholesale them for right now. Just keep in mind that if your goal is a pure silver play, classic US silver dollars are not the way to go.

Awesome stuff though overall, and I loved that you were able to snag a Ron Paul round.

DJP333's picture

Thanks for the info

Yes actually I was told that the Morgans were .77 oz of silver, however I just like them because they are so old! And this dealer always has a few Ron Pauls when I visit him so I love picking those up.

Q:

How come the person who gave you those coins traded real wealth for crappy FRN's?

Did he not realize what he was doing --- OR

Are FRN's wealth and you just don't realize it ??

DJP333's picture

FRN's are wealth of course,

however, the value of each FRN is decreasing at an alarming rate, while the value of Silver is rising. So hopefully in the future (as I am holding on to these for a long time) I retain and increase my wealth, rather than it plummeting because I keep it in the bank or the stock market. I am not converting all my cash to silver. Just some savings.

I would think the person who sold those to me uses some of the FRN's to buy more coin and some to use on living expenses.

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”
"Gold is the money of kings; silver is the money of gentlemen; barter is the money of peasants; but debt is the money of slaves."

So the person who sold it to

So the person who sold it to you needs FRNs to use on living expenses and he can't use the "real wealth" silver coins for his living expenses.

This means that FRNs are more useful and more desirable to him. And in order to make himself better off, he got rid of the useless silver coins.

Wake up people.

DJP333's picture

That dealer's been there

a while, because he decided to invest his money in real wealth over the years and not just FRN's. I am sure that he has made a lot of money on precious metals in the last 10 years. Gold and precious metals is a hedge against inflation and financial panic.

makin' money

I am sure that he has made a lot of money on precious metals in the last 10 years.

He's made a lot of money -- yes what he made was federal reserve notes, by buying silver low and selling high.

You just called federal reserve notes "money".
