Joining the School Revolution! Congratulate me!Submitted by tasmlab on Mon, 11/25/2013 - 13:35
My family is joining the School revolution and are effectively unschooling/homeschooling starting December 10th. We're very excited!
My 8 and 5 year olds are currently in public school. A nice enough one with kind teachers and good services, but it is still a public school. My two year old will hopefully never step into one.
I've recently read Ron Paul's "The School Revolution". In it, he says that political activism is useless (ha!) and that all meaningful change for liberty must start with the family (you'd think he was sneaking in some Molyneux podcasts).
In the book, he believes that if even a minority, but large, portion of parents retake their children and homeschool instead of public school that the institution can be 'end around'-ed, i.e., we'll stop funding the schools and it will eventually spell the end of our style of government. Fascinating!
If kids learned liberty early, they won't be accepting wars, glamorizing soldiering, they understand corporatism and fascism, they won't think that ethics comes at the point of a gun, etc. I became libertarian around the age 30, I'm 43 now. I can't imagine if I had a 25-year head start.
Paul's book is decent enough - kind of simple and folksy. What I REALLY feasted on was John Taylor Gatto's "Dumbing us down" and "Weapons of Mass Destruction". They may have been some of the best liberty books I've ever read. I'm now reading Llewllyn's "Teenage liberation handbook" which is pretty good so far.
It took a while to convince my wife. We were both public schooled after all. But I got her to come around, esp. after turning her on to the books.
BTW the term "homeschool" is a term for the benefit of school administrators and neighbors. There doesn't have to be schooling that actually takes place.
Anyways, congratulate me and my family. One step at a time. Onward! Upward!
