the US public is largely asleep.
The reason that Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are appealing to everyday Republicans is that there is a demand for those cardboard cut-outs. It isn't just the media or the political parties that are at fault. The PUBLIC at some point has to buy into their sound bites and their nice neckties, and discard the truths they hear from the Ron Pauls and Gary Johnsons and Rand Pauls and Justin Amashes.
The public has to decide to accept or reject the two party system, and all of its problems. The public could well decide political parties just get in the way of things, but they are too lazy. They want a football game to watch and to root for the blue or the red.
The public has to decide when there is too much regulation and minutia management. The public has to decide when the government gets its hands in too much and they are no longer free. If anything, the way people have responded to the patriot act and the economic great recession is prooving that opinions and prejudices held by the common man are more weighty than the facts they are based on.
In one sense, our system does function more democratically than we give it credit for. But that is the problem.
Waking people up is key. Outreach is key.
