Day-Long Lockdown & Shelter-in-Place for Whole City - Crank Call or Police Drill?Submitted by fightapathy on Tue, 11/26/2013 - 11:54
Yesterday morning, at 9:38 a.m. Tuesday November 26th, a call from a public phone on Yale's main campus reported "a man carrying a long gun", with no further details.
Instantly, New Haven police across the city went into Red Alert mode. SWAT was mobilised. Yale Alert ordered shelter-in-place for all persons on the campus and Hospital, a full mile from the alleged sighting. Schools up to two miles from the alleged sighting were also locked down.
Heavily Armed soldier-cops patrolled the campus for four hours or more. Their patrols extended far beyond the campus perimeter. Inside the campus, Yale police conducted room-by-room searches all day long.
Repeated phone calls from Yale Alert gave status reports. In the late afternoon, my children came home from their elementary school two miles from the alleged sighting with notices reporting the school's automatic lockdown. Three messages gradually lifted the shelter-in-place during the evening. We received a total of ten messages from Yale Alert, the last around 9:00 p.m.
"It now appears that the man the Yale employee saw may have been one of the early responding police officers carrying a rifle," Yale Vice President Linda Koch Lorimer said in a statement posted on Yale's website.
So, was this a case of knee-jerk reaction of a hyper-moronic militaristic idiocracy gone haywire? Or a coordinated police drill designed to test alert and reaction systems? Personally, I feel it was a small version of the Boston Marathon Bombing drill.
