Daily Paul Followers. English is the Language, Not Spanish. No One's Free Speech is Violated. Any Questions?

There was a time that when immigrants came from Europe to have a better life in America. The kids would learn English at school and the parents were eager to learn the English lessons taught to their children so the parents can better their lives learning the language. If it were left up to me. I would shut down all Spanish speaking radio,TV stations and print media because it does not help no one. It is a disincentive for a person not to assimilate into the language and culture. It is has nothing to do with free speech or freedom. If a person does not want to learn English, they should go home to the land they came from.

the school principle has every right to have English only spoken. in story:

My employer who is the foreman who is here legally from Columbia has a policy. His rule is no Spanish spoken on the job and English is the only language in the work place among co-workers. No English, no hire.

People speaking Spanish when they can speak English well breeds mistrust among those who do not speak Spanish. Many times these people who can speak English speak Spanish behind people's backs because they are not man enough or lady enough to say it in English is an act of cowards.

The school principle's policy prohibiting Spanish in the classroom stops these insults made behind the teachers or students backs. If they have a problem with someone. They should say it in English. Insults in Spanish is an act of cowards if they can not speak do not want to speak there minds in the proper language. It has nothing to do with free speech or individual liberty.

I plan on visiting Russia hopefully next year. I am learning the language so I can communicate with the Russian people. I know many Russians can speak English well. I will learn to speak the language because as a guest in their country. If I make the effort to speak there language. I know I will earn their respect for making the effort. I do not expect the Russian people to accommodate me if I refuse to learn the Russian language.

If I make a honest effort to learn Russian and make a mistake speaking. It is a different story if they use English to correct my Russian.

It is my responsibility to learn the Russian language. It is not the Russians obligation to accommodate me if I refuse to assimilate.

I like to see Spanish people try this in the Russian Federation with this press 1 for Russian and 2 for Spanish. It would never fly in Russia. Learn their language or go home. Their way or the highway is the right policy of Russia if they refuse to learn the native language.

So you Daily Paul people before you talk about free speech. Better learn history first. It is noting to do with free speech. The language of the people is a major part of the strength and unity of a nation.

English is the Language of America. Not Spanish. Any Questions?

Soon or will be the Americans way for the Highway if a person does not assimilate to learn English and learn our history or culture. There is no room for those who will not assimilate to be Americans and not have duel loyalties to their native country. There is only room for one American flag and one Language and that is English.

Rome wasn't like any other nation on earth, too

And guess what, they had a common language, the lingua Franca, Latin, and Greek. Greek was more academical, while Latin was more for administration purpose. In either way, there has to be a mean of communicating through out the empire. So the US, too has to have a mean for the people to communicate with .

The free market should pick the language.

Otherwise you're trying to dictate what language people should use and that's not liberty.

Honestly, this doesn't even seem like a pressing concern to me. English is still a prominent language of the world and I suspect it will be long after my death.

Tower of Babble redux

Businesses should have that right and even the right to refuse to speak English if they so choose. Government, however, should not be discriminating in favor of a specific second language. Where I live, the second most common language is an Amish German dialect. In the next county, Hmong is by far the most common second language. However, government forms and publications show up with English and Spanish. That is sort of an insult to the Amish and Hmongs who are obviously not considered as politically important.

I've read and noticed that multi-culturalism is positive but that bi-culturalism can destroy nations. "Di" or "bi", take your choice, as in divide and bisect. Ways around divisiveness include English only which is the cheapest and puts the responsibility of translation on people who choose to move here, having government print second language publications in whatever second language is most used in a given county or city, or requiring government to provide language help and publications in all languages to eliminate its ongoing discrimination against non-Spanish second language resident.

You do realize

There is a difference between printing documents in X languages and forcing people to only speak a language you prefer, right?

I don't agree with the government printing documents in multiple languages while at the same time I don't agree with the government dictating which languages I can speak.

3 better than 2

I didn't say anything about government telling people which language they have to use. I do have relatives in Canada who are burdened by bi-lingual requirements. one cousin lost her government job. She was allowed three months to learn french when a different government came to power. She didn't ad lost her job. Another cousin did great at all his engineering classes but couldn't master French. He wound up being hired as an engineer but he never graduated. On the more positive side, one of my uncles married a French-Canadian. He and two of his brothers were buying a cow herd from a retiring French speaking couple. They conducted their discussion in French knowing that the purchasers spoke English. My first mentioned uncle just translated their french conversation into Norwegian to his brothers. I guess the moral is that speaking three languages is better than speaking two but that having just to languages is divisive and a pain in the rear. It looks like it is our government's policy to proceed to that unnecessary conflict.

Western culture

The US thrived under Western traditions. People want, or wanted, to come here because of the opportunities created by Western traditions. There's an IQ average associated with Western traditions as well. Nothing in known history is equal to Western thought and accomplishment.

We may "host" all kinds here, but when it gets to where they're not adapting themselves to Western traditions, when Westerners are adapting themselves to third world standards, the point of the whole enterprise is lost.

a correction

Chinese civilization has been more developed than most of Europe though most of history. Or read about King Sejong's reign in Korea before Columbus.

China stopped developing as a society as early as 221 BC. For the next 2000 years from 221 BC, nothing much of importance came from the Chinese society. Most if not all the current inventions are here because of the western civilizations or things build upon the western civilizations. So the results is easily comparable.

Chinese superior civilization through most of history

Europe was mostly inhabited by barbarians for much of that time period and then graduated into the dark ages. Europe woke up with the Protestant reformation and the likes of Columbus and Cortez. They were hardly civilized either from the standpoint of Indians China had already traveled to the east coast of Africa before Columbus and there was the silk road by which Chinese fineries travelled to Europe. I would put the parity between Europe and China at about 1450AD So for most of the time since the last ice age until about 1450, Chinese civilization upstaged that of most of Europe. Silk, rockets, gunpowder, cuisine, spices, clocks, a system of defensive roads - all this was going on while most of our European ancestors were wearing animal skins, painting themselves blue, and living on dirt floors.

How about papermaking, the compass, gunpowder, and printing, just as a start?

Here is some reading for you:

“Although it was the middle of winter, I finally realized that, within me, summer was inextinguishable.” — Albert Camus

No doubt

But Europeans pulled ahead and ran circles around the Chinese for several hundred years, and most importantly they--we--laid out principles and formalized rules for free societies, which unleashed the energy of the marketplace and created the modern world.

As far as I know Spanish is a

As far as I know Spanish is a language with Latin roots. In fact Spain is a little bit more to the west than Britain. So what do you mean by "western"? Part of the IQ generated by western traditions is to use the language correctly.

Western is a commonly used term

Culture and traditions developed in the western part of Eurasia. Europe. Things originated by white people.

Spanish in North America is associated with Latin America, which is the third world, dominated by indigenous indians and former slaves.

you do not know history well.

you do not know history well. ssk the Russian immigrants and others from eastern Europe. No one accommodated them. They speak the language fluently. Why should Spanish speaking people be treated any different than immigrants from other countries?

Here is what President Theodore Roosevelt Said about immigration:

We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an

American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn't doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people.
