San Francisco Chronicle Endorses McCain - WTF?

0 votes

The San Francisco Chronicle opined that McCain is the best choice for Republicans in its editorial section today. The Chronicle is usually a far-left mouthpiece, but I can just feel the invisible hand of Hearst in this one.

Here's my letter to the editor (not that I expect it to be printed):

Editor,

I was disappointed to read your endorsement of John McCain.
Republicans have a leading candidate available who not only opposed the war in Iraq from the outset, but has voted against funding it at every opportunity. No Democratic candidate can say the same. He also supports gay marriage unequivocally. No Democratic candidate can say that, either. He has repeatedly out-polled Rudy Giuliani in the primaries, and has beaten out all of his rivals in fund raising in recent months. His name is Ron Paul.

Your support for a warmongering enemy of gay rights over Dr. Paul
mystifies me. One wonders if the Chronicle is worried that, in a race
between Hillary and Dr. Paul, voters might choose the anti-war
candidate.

The SF chron/examiner has

The SF chron/examiner has always been an elitist rag. Its been a bizarre mix of uber-liberal news and pompous parading of the local ultra-rich, high society debutant types in their local and community coverage.

Keep in mind that...

All major newspapers in large markets are owned by one of the few media giants in this country. This is how the MSM is able to decide who is president in the United States of America. We need a President who will enforce the Sherman Anti-Trust laws and start breaking up all the monopolies that now exist in America.

Thanks

Not surprised

The New York Times also endorsed McCain over all the other Republicans (and Clinton among the Democrats). McCain favors amnesty for illegal immigrants, always a big selling point for liberal newspapers. And the liberal papers believe just as much as the conservative ones do that it's our job to play world cop -- they just want us to get involved in different wars, not stay out of other people's wars entirely.

They want MCCain

to get the nomination so the democrats can win the white house.

Plan

I think that is the plan and McCain knows it. He and Hillary just love each other.

Endorsing McCain

Just proves McCain is more of a liberal than a conservative.

second that, Liberal to the bone with a lot of neo-conism to go.

Ron Paul does NOT support gay "marriage."

Ron Paul does NOT support Gay marriage. He just does not support amending the U.S. Constitution to regulate marriage. Ron Paul stated he would have voted for the Defense of Marriage act if he had been in congress in 1996.

To be clear, Dr. Paul has

To be clear, Dr. Paul has said marriage ought to be a religious matter, and the government ought not to be involved at all. Therefore same-sex members of religions that allow it ought to be able to marry if they want to.

As for his personal opposition to gay marriage - again, it's a religious matter. But it's hardly out of keeping for a Libertarian to be in favor of legalizing things they personally oppose. He also opposes drug use, for example, but is for ending the drug war.

As with so many other issues, his position is too nuanced to fit on a bumper sticker, and both the right and left have tried to spin it one way or the other. But it's actually quite consistent.

supports gay marriage...really ?

...you mean each state would decide. right?

Here's a reasonable

Here's a reasonable breakdown.

Just like with abortion, I believe that marriage is an issue best decided by the states, not the federal government. I’m opposed to a federal ban on gay marriage, but it also goes both ways: I’m against the courts at the federal level pressuring the states into accepting same-sex marriage licenses. What we’re talking about in both cases is the redefinition of an ancient social institution by the federal government that’s best left to the people to decide at the local level. I have introduced legislation called the We the People Act to remove deeply personal social issues like marriage and abortion from the jurisdiction of the federal courts so the states and local governments can make the decisions, as the Constitution intends.

Muckraker Report: So if the city council of San Francisco, if the town assembly of Burlington, if the state of New Hampshire decided to legalize civil unions between gay couples, you would be okay with that?

Congressman Ron Paul: Yes, if those decisions were made by legislatures, and not by courts.

Right - to be clear, as a

Right - to be clear, as a matter of policy, he'd leave it to the states. That's why he supported the defense of marriage act - all which didn't ban gay marriage, it just prevented one state from having to recognize a gay marriage from another state.

But Dr. Paul has also stated unequivocally that gays should be allowed to marry if they want to.

Nice rebuttal

I'm not surprised at the Chronicle. They are endorsing McCain for the same reason anti-war liberal and moderate primary voters have been voting for him: they know he's going to govern from the center-left just like Bill Clinton and will not hesitate to raise taxes if he "thinks it's the right thing to do".

nice!

I think you nailed it! ---sure be nice if it were printed....sigh....

Why McCain?

He is the best Republican candidate to ensure a democratic victory.

That's not true - quite the

That's not true - quite the opposite, actually. He out-polls Hillary nationwide, and is very close with Obama. Romney or Huck would be the dream nominee for Demos.

If the choice is Clinton vs McCain

it's a win/win for the elite. He's practically a democrat. Close enough at least.

maybe...

but San Francisco in no way can support the 100 year carpet bomber -- so in the view of that city, McCain is the most vulnerable
