Ever wonder why Rachel Maddow stays on the air with low-ratings? Here's why...

Not Enough to Boycott A&E; You Have to Cancel Your Cable
by John Nolte 19 Dec 2013

For reasons of my own, I neither participate in, encourage, or organize boycotts. This piece isn't about that. The A&E boycott over the suspension of "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson for expressing his Christian beliefs does, however, give me the opportunity to talk about a subject near and dear to my heart, which is the legal tyranny of bundled cable that means that any boycott against A&E will have little to no effect.

If you are wondering why low-rated cable television shows and networks not only stay alive but also manage to be profitable, it is due to the bundled cable racket that forces over a hundred million Americans to pay for dozens of channels they don't like and/or watch. For example, if you want Fox News but have to get CNN and MSNBC in the package, chances are very good that CNN and MSNBC are getting a chunk of your cable bill.

The real travesty

The real travesty is that A&E has been on the air for 30 years without ever producing ANYTHING worth watching. A real testament to the corporate welfare state.

If you apply this theory to politics, you may see how Ron Paul envisioned the rEVOLution forming and why he insisted in the GOP.

There is a nifty gadget that is called a Roku box. You select your own programing and it functions off your wireless internet.

Pay for what you want and let the free market close the propaganda channels

I have a ROKU too.

Between $8 for netflix, $8 for hulu plus, redbox and grocery store dvd rentals, I have more content than I can watch.

When I want to watch my tribe's warriors (seattle seahawks)engage in combatants with another tribes warriors that I hate (because they are not of my tribe), I walk next door to my brothers house and sponge off of his directv that he pays out the ass for. If he wasn't there, I would go to a bar and watch the game.

I wonder if media whores wake

I wonder if media whores wake up some day when they are old and realize their part in selling out and destroying America? Or I wonder if you pay them enough....if they even care?

Insightful and thought provoking

You make some excellent points about paying for channels/content you neither watch or care for.

Sounds eerily similar to the way the rest of society is arranged.. Classes you neither need nor want, Healthcare, General Insurance (car, house, etc).. perhaps these are merely symptoms of a market that needs less government intervention and mandates.

Great points in your article!

She does't have low ratings.

I agree with you on your overall sentiment, but she does't have low ratings. She is one of the highest on MSNBS..

And yes bundled cable sucks... like combined bills in CONgress.

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

That is very interesting, Brian...

I went through the list of all those different shows and I'm happy to say that I don't know what most of them are!! I've seen Robin Meade in the morning...I know who Velez-Mitchell is, but don't know what her show is even about (it should go away, along with that other blonde awful woman is...her voice makes my skin crawl...and it's all trials, all the time...crap that doesn't matter)...oh, I know how Bill O-Reily is and want to set him on fire....never watched his show...not even for a minute.
I do watch RT quite a bit, if I want to hear about world news...or "Breaking the Set". Other than that, it's the Weather Channel. I just don't 'do' TV like I did years ago.
BTW, Brian...Love the "MSNBS" too...I will send you a couple bucks in order to use it a few times! LOL

One of the highest on MSNBC?!

One of the highest on MSNBC?! That's not saying much, but I guess it's something. :) Good for Rachel.

I had the same thought.

Well duh. Most of the

Well duh. Most of the channels that currently exist would evaporate overnight if they offered them individually.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

you know what, they can have

you know what, they can have their networks, their cables, as long as they leave the damn internet alone.

the natural sucessor, as long as its able to grow without constraints

Yes, you can still use the internet to critizise them, im not calling to absolve them, but to speed up their irrelevance, but their trying, oh yes, their trying, under the guise of regulation, their trying

Cut that Cable. Keep the

Cut that Cable. Keep the internets.

I never stopped wondering how people keep the cable subscription. Basically you keep paying money to view commercials.

Engage in Secure Exchange

I wish I could

But I'm a big sports fan. I can get everything online except live sports (at least reliably). I know, I know, bread and circuses, it's all a distraction, it's all fixed, blah, blah, blah.

Stop consuming the bread and circuses

Sports is the absolute worst mind pacifier.

(I say this with all respect for a fellow liberty lover and I apologize for the passion of it's presentation)

Spectator sports is designed to make you feel like you have accomplished something that you haven't. It's the most sad pathetic thing imaginable.

You are literally watching someone else work, someone else getting paid, and feeling like you did something. You didn't.

Along the way you are learning to think you are 'connected' to someone who dresses the same and 'enemies' of someone who dresses different.

Learning to pick sides for no reason.

If you like contests and challenge, engage in them yourself. Join a league. Play video games.

Otherwise, read, love, produce, hang, think.. hell drink or masturbate, anything is better than the dehumanizing, emasculating, adulation of the achievements of another man.

i mostly agree

but i do love the ufc and i have been known to watch the nba playoffs from time to time.

i have friends though who are totally obsessed with football and they get emotionally upset for day's if their team (dallas) loses a big game. it's very weird and mentally unhealthy. they know nothing about politics and live in a dumbed down fantasy land full of bread and circus.

"Otherwise, read, love, produce, hang, think.. hell drink or masturbate"

Hey, I can multi-task. I do plenty of that stuff too, some more than others.

I don't feel like I'm accomplishing anything. So if that's the point of sports, I'm clearly missing it.

I don't feel "connected" to any of these athletes unless I know them personally. The true connection is with my friends and fellow fans. Having a few beers and cheering on our favorite team (or participating in some friendly ribbing with rival fans) is very enjoyable to me.

It's entertainment, plain and simple. Ron Paul is entertained by reading economic textbooks, I'm entertained by sports. It's just one of my many various hobbies. Sometimes life is stressful and a distraction like sports is what keeps me sane.

And if I'm watching college sports, I'm not watching somebody else get paid. Well, OK, that's questionable and a whole other debate.

I appreciate you taking the time to write this post and I respect your opinion, but you're not changing my mind. If you followed sports, you'd know that changing a Boston sports fan's mind is damn near impossible.

I won't change your mind

but you will:)

I'm not going to argue the case that Boston fans are less fanatical than other towns. They would be happy to do that job for me.

But you have heard my thoughts. And you will weigh them in light of the value of a finite lifespan. Will you idolize the accomplishments of others? Or accomplish things yourself?

And I know you understand I do not at all mean purely pecuniary accomplishments.

It may be that you can enjoy spectator sports without internalizing the doctrine that is served with it. But you do know what they are trying to teach you. It is a message of collectivism, of idolizing the parochial, and demonizing the foreign. It is a message of nationalism, it is a message of dehumanization, or slavery, of loving the lionized hero, of attaching your feeling of worth to the accomplishments of another man.

Is this the activity of a man? Is this the activity we should want our sons to engage in?

i hear you

Cable is for my wife. she likes the entertainment. i have to respect that. Me? i watch everything on the internet.
