Say Goodbye To Your 40 Watt Incandescent Light Bulb 1/1/14

A Real Turn-off: Last Phase of Light Bulb Ban Takes Effect Jan. 1

As Americans watch 2013 fade away, they must also bid a fond farewell to Thomas Edison’s most famous invention courtesy of Uncle Sam. Beginning January 1, Edison’s classic incandescent light bulb will essentially be banned in the country that gave it birth — all to please environmental and corporate lobbyists.

Under the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, only bulbs that meet certain energy-efficiency standards may be manufactured in or imported into the United States. Incandescent bulbs cannot possibly meet those standards, and so they are, for all intents and purposes, prohibited.

LED's look to be the way to go vs. those CFL's.

60 watt bulbs also

The 60 watt incandescent bulbs are being "banned" in 2014 also. The 100 watt incandescent bulbs will be "banned" in 2015.

Sure the compact fluorescent lightbulbs save a bit of energy, but I don't like the type of light they emit, and the fact that they typically contain five milligrams of mecury.

While that isn't all that much, it is still mecury. The problem comes when a bulb breaks. Mercury escapes as vapor that can be inhaled and as a fine powder that can settle into carpet and other textiles. Cleanup has to be done carefully and then you should dispose of it at a proper disposal site, where ever in the hell that is.

Whats next? This is getting to be too much nowdays.

Soon CFL bulbs will soon be banned also

which is a good thing as they contain mercury. Everything is going LED. LED bulbs are cool and they pull half the watts of a CFL

It's only a matter of time before the police will bust....

down your door, make everyone get on the floor, while they trash your house in the name of the "War on Incandescent Light Bulbs."

I don't mind switching to LED bulbs once they become competitively priced with incandescent bulbs.

I need to go ahead and order

I need to go ahead and order a couple hundred bucks worth of 40w and 60w incandescent bulbs and stack them in a corner somewhere.

I have four lamps I love that take 60 watt bulbs,

I will never purchase CFL bulbs. I'd use candles first. So... guess it's time to do the same.

Edit: See joeinmo's comment above. The old kind will continue to be available.

So the time has come...better stock up.

Those CFL bulbs contain mercury, and are damaging to cells.
