Pope Francis proclaimed in his Midnight Mass homily to love our brothers and sisters and to reject pride, deceit, and self-seeking as Christ, true man and true God has entered our history. But he also acknowledged that "the spirit of darkness enfolds the world" and that today's pilgrim "is bound by duty to keep watch" - and "do not be afraid." The Pontiff, celebrating his first Christmas Mass as Pope, noted that "The shepherds were the first to see this "tent", to receive the news of Jesus’ birth. They were the first because they were among the last, the outcast. And they were the first because they were awake, keeping watch in the night, guarding their flocks.
