How is the race for president like the NFL playoffs?

This is just a free form brainstorming session, not to be taken too seriously. But the similarities are pretty overwhelming:

  • The NFL has two divisions: The AFC & NFC; the Presidential race has two as well: The Reds & Blues
  • Both competitions have a playoff system. The NFL has games; Politics has "debates."
  • In both competitions, the object of competition is to destroy the opponent. In the NFL it is through physical dominance and strategy; in politics it is through lies and strategy.
  • Both are nationally televised events with huge advertising dollars and sponsorships at stake.
  • Both are winner take all events.
  • Incredible resources are mobilized in order to win.
  • Winners are showered with admiration and respect.
  • After the winner is determined, everyone works extra hard to take the winner down in subsequent competitions.

Those are some of the similarities. Can you think of any others? What are the differences?

Sports / Politics / Business / War. All expressions of the same thing.

Good comments everyone! Thanks.

And after the big win

You get to hear about all the players committing crimes and going to jail.

And when the Politicians commit crimes you get to see....

Oh, hey, there's a basketball game on!!

Ha! Good one

allegory - ˈalɪg(ə)ri/ - noun - 1. a story, poem, or picture which can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.

Similarity:

It doesn't really seem to matter who wins.

Here is a difference:

In football, the winning team doesn't go around stealing from millions to kill hundreds of thousands.

Don't mean to be a sour ass, I have a history in the military...

It is a good post.

Another Difference

In Pro Football if you do not do a good job you get fired.

Tribalism.

The NFL, politics, social cliques, nation states, and many more are products of tribalism.

Racism is not primarily about thinking another ethnic group is genetically inferior, it is about that person/people not being a part of my tribe, therefore I will invent the justification as to why they are of less value.

When MSNBC paints all non-democrats (outside of their tribe) as racists, it is not really about racism. It is about justifying why those outsiders are of somehow lesser. That outsiders are less intelligent and evolved, hence inferior, hence disposable.

War cannot take place when your tribe sees people outside of your tribe with the same value, you must first dehumanize them in the mind, which at the same time is reinforcement that you yourself are somehow more valuable. A little more godlike.

It's always a football team that wins

They always play football, it's always a football team that wins the superbowl, and it is always one from either the NFC or the AFC.

I find this similarity striking, as in an election it always seems that we get to vote for government, that a politician always wins, and it's either from D or R.

Currently consuming: Harry Browne, Free Domain Radio; JT Gatto and Holt; Wii U

They do have a lot in common.

They do have a lot in common.

- Both are entertaining to watch.
- A participant can get seriously hurt in either.
- Most people usually don't really care who wins or loses unless their "team" is in the game, but even still, most pick one side or the other to root for.
- In both "games", participants have no problem cheating to win (though in the NFL cheaters are more likely to get caught and punished).
- Most fans have teams they root for as well as teams they always root against.

Here's one difference - in sport, a true fan can and usually does respect the opponent, even when (and perhaps even more so when) that opponent kicks his team's rear end. That's almost never the case in presidential politics.

some others

In football, the coach has a master plan. In politics, the coach has a plaster man.

In football, I get to enjoy a battle in front of me. In politics, I get to enjoy a frontal lobotomy.

In football, the winner doesn't leave a lack of tries. In politics, the winner does leave a track of lies.

In football, a player under pressure = he can choke. In politics, a player under pressure = chickenhawk.

NFL

doesn't pay taxes either.

yes it does

yes it does

Actually... you are wrong

NFL is tax exempt and doesn’t have to pay taxes Because of it’s Non-Profit status

NFL is a corrupt organization run by the Mafia. I could care less if you don't believe me. I know for a fact!!

Roger Goodell is a Government shill and has been a criminal for 20 years now. I know all about him. All the dirt that the NFL carries too.

Is it still fun to watch? Yes.. but it's a crappy league run by Criminals.

Vega Vegas Vegas Vegas Vegas.. That is really what the NFL is all about.

I guess you're technically

I guess you're technically right that the NFL doesn't pay taxes, but that's misleading because all the teams in the NFL, which is where the real money is made, do pay taxes. the NFL league office has even been losing money the past couple of years so it wouldn't have paid income tax regardless of its nonprofit status.

I got one.
All are directed by someone on top,the rest,is the illusion
for the masses,so they think something is really happening
then there is something called reality.

Media Circus

One similarity could be the infinite amount of talking heads predicting future results.

One difference is in football the outcome is decided on the playing field despite whatever the media talking points were heading into the contest. However in the presidential election, the media talking points often influence the outcome.

"My country is the world, and my religion is to do good."
Thomas Paine

Michael Nystrom's picture

Exactly!

One similarity could be the infinite amount of talking heads predicting future results.

Probably more people make a living off of talking about football - from all the newspapers, blogs, magazines, local radio hosts - than actually play it. Same goes for politics.

Beyond that, there is a near infinite, rich ecosystem that is supported by government and politics. DC is the richest city in the nation! Its like a tumor.

People would say the same about professional sports: It is like a tumor. I don't see it that way for a simple reason: I like sports!

- - -

Yes, and you're right about your second point, too! In football, there is an ultimate reality: The final score. And nothing said during the game will influence the outcome. Though media pressure certainly plays its role on performance.

In politics, there is definitely that media interaction. The media can help either make or break the candidate.

But knowing that, candidates should be able to understand and maneuver that landscape as well. That becomes part of the game - part of the competition. It becomes a multi-level game. One aspect of the game is all about gaming the media, and keeping that beast tamed and entertained.

I think Reagan was a master at that. Basically he made people laugh and feel comfortable.

Nope. Too light and airy.

The big news tonight is it is SO ON with the Randians. Mega line drawn. Once again the conversation turns to GUT THE BIPARTISANS.

Oh Funk!

That Rand thing is that big a deal?

I'm tuned out. Tuned in to a different frequency. Tuned in to the NFL playoffs, as a matter of fact. Among other things.

But the frequency for politics for me is a broken note. It doesn't sound right. A little too schreechy for my taste. So really. Why endure it.

So GUT THE BIPARTISANS! What does that mean. Can I get a translation?

All art is only done by the individual. The individual is all you ever have, and all schools only serve to classify their members as failures. E.H.

I can try to bring down the mother ship without landing it on ya

Yeah it's a flashpoint. The implicit but inescapable result is a permanent rift. There's NO WAY it's gonna "happen" for Rand now.

Was going back and forth a bit with Lyman on this, expressed my feeling this was gonna happen and he said he hoped I would be wrong. Well burn that wagon cause it ain't rolling.

I was in it with Ron, among other reasons, to destroy the GOP from within. I really didn't care about remaking it, my vision was a battered and smoking ruin. I have no interest in building it back into power. The Randians are presently demonstrating their subservience and intent to do exactly this. They don't wanna ruin the vehicle of state, they wanna drive. Hey dad can I borrow the car?

So be it. Now there's a war on. It's gonna be classic: old alliances and friendships suddenly terminating, everybody picking sides, wild accusations thrown back and forth and I'll do my best to contribute. The rest of the world is watching and they are gonna see we're no more uniform on this than gay ducks, the risen Lord or...whatever the heck we were arguing about before that, I forget. The War On Christmas which is back into it's seasonal detentes. Rather like football and hockey I suppose. Ritualized warfare.

Yeah, well, likewise

I pretty much knew it was going to crash and burn anyway. I need to catch up with Lyman. For that matter, I owe you an email as well. All this moving around really put a crimp in my schedule.

Yeah, see - it is just like football. Fight! Fight! Destroy! Dominate! I just want people to be honest about it. I have no intention to get in the middle of it.

I didn't watch the video clip that's got everyone up in arms. I tried to, and I guess it would be like trying to ask one of these NFL haters to watch the highlight reel from this weekend.

South America? That Galt's gulch thing? You going? Send back the report and I'll think about it.
