Opening #TeamRenaissance’s Mailbag

One of my goals for this year is to be better connected to our community. This mailbag is an experiment to strengthen that connection. Straight Talk consists of social media posts (in bold) from my facebook and twitter feeds, followed by your questions & comments . I pick content I believe to be the most interesting and respond the best I can.

Please write to my inbox at dylanratigan.com, tweet at me with #TeamRenaissance, or post a facebook comment under one of my posts.

Wife and I have

Two 10x15x10 Quonset greenhouses, and three smaller outdoor beds on 1/2 acre, for our organic vegitable. We buy what seed we could not, or did not harvest from organic seed company's in Oregon " Victory Seed " and " Territorial ".

I have rain collection barrels that collect and store our vast amounts of NW rainfall, and irrigate our gardens with it.

We've been at it three years now, and have learned quite a bit. Like what veggies grow best where, sush as Cukes love the bright morning and noonday sun but prefer shade in the afternoon, that our bell peppers and jalipinos love the green houses as do the cherry tomatoes, but bigger varieties of tomatoes want sun, sun, and more sun.

We've also started raking the leaves INTO the beds rather than tossing them into the yard waste, free fertilizer that slowly breaks down returning valuable nutrients to the soil. Oh, we also compost year round and produce about 150 LBs yearly of good, naturaly rich fertilized compost back into our beds. Obviously we have to augment this small amount, and try to use manure.

In between my summer of fine woodcrafting, still on the curly Cherry dining table and gardening our spring, summer and fall days are full and rewarding in many many ways; not the least of which is the hundreds we save by growing our own delicious tasting and nutrient full veggies !

God bless

Do you use lime to facilitate

Do you use lime to facilitate the composting?

How do you get the compost 'hot'?

We use a organic composite of enzymes

In which there is some lime. We've also discovered, quite by accident that the bone meal we use to supplement our roses is well recieved by the veggies as well. We buy the enzymes at Lowes, and must admit I've never searched for a more " organic " source.

The " heat " is a natural by product of the chemical process's involved in the decomposition, so it's not really "hot ", it just steams, thusly appearing " hot ", so it is a igure of speech.

God Bless

Love it! Fresh, highly

Love it!

Fresh, highly nutrient dense food is the key to good health (and to avoiding the growing nightmare known as Obamacare).

Gotta love these folks bucking the government/corporate food/drug fascistic system so responsible for the poor health of so many Americans.

Not enough of this is going on in my community which is one reason why we're planning a move for later this year.

I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be. Albert Einstein

"bucking the government/corporate food/drug fascistic system..."

Is becoming big business!
INSPIRING VENDORS
Our local farmers and purveyors are important to us - they’re the core to our ethos of building good food.

The clean fish that produce

The clean fish that produce fertilizer - which is then filtered by the growing greens - is a great ecosystem compared to commercial fish farms that allow the fish to stew in their excrement.

If you haven't seen StillWater's extensive post,

let me be the first to tell you that his sections relating to permacultre are quality and they're in abundance:

Stillwater has another thread on Alternative Cancer therapies. Again, quality and in abundance:

Joel Salatin

Is the best!

But...

He doesn't grow produce in winter like these guys do.

Good call.

I remember reading about an Irish farmer that could grow exotic fruits all season long.....in Ireland. He doesn't plough the fields and he says the same kinda language as Salatin: "Establish a symbiotic relationship."

I'll have to find the link for ya.

Such an interesting subject.

" The stock brokers are going to be driving taxis. The smart ones will learn to drive tractors so they can work for the smart farmers. The farmers are going to be driving Lamborghinis. I’m telling you."

"There Grows The

"There Grows The Neighborhood!"

Heyoooo

Now we just need a Co-Op for Cannabis.

Wait....

If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

No. No. No.

We need to get out in front of the locomotive and lay NEW track.

Maybe find a way to make dried fish poop into a hallucinogen.

The government would take decades to figure it out...
No tax
No regulations
No raids

... as long as some band doesn't come along and write songs about it.
