Bill Maher and Glenn Greenwald clash over ‘totally batsh*t’ Edward Snowden (video) *updated w/full interview*

FULL INTERVIEW:

http://youtu.be/YgG-WoQQ7Io

Bill Maher acknowledged his respect for former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden during Real Time‘s return episode on Friday, while comparing him to former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) during an interview with journalist Glenn Greenwald.

“I agree with what he says, I nod along,” Maher said. “And then he says something totally batsh*t.”

Maher then quoted from Snowden’s “open letter to the people of Brazil” last month, in which Snowden said programs like the NSA’s surveillance efforts “were never about terrorism” but were instead about “social control, and diplomatic manipulation.”

Maher is pure trash, foul language from a foul man.

On scale from 0-10, Maher is a zero. He actually makes Glenn Beck look exceptional.

Maher

was thrown to the ground with the bat,,,t comment so he had to use the "F" word to appease his supporters. What a bought off sack sucker he is.

NOSHEEPLE

What is a "terrorist"? Another unachored and co-opted word.

"“were never about terrorism” but were instead about “social control, and diplomatic manipulation.”"

By my definition, at least, a terrorist would have to be someone who attempted to CONTROL through FEAR.

By that definition - which I think is reasonable - our government is a terrorist organization, working overtime to control its population in all ways and by all means ; notably including fear-mongering.

Our government and the elite can't stand the light of day. But the day is coming regardless.

the sheer brilliance, self-control, and courage of some people

...humbles me. And makes me want to better myself.

Paul, Manley, Snowden, and now Greenwald. What do these guys have in common?

(1) They are able to see past all the BS and see the stuff - and the long term consequences of that stuff - in our day to day which conditioned people like Meher can't see. How are these few able to escape conditioning and actually SEE? They are brilliant.

(2) They exercise EXTRAORDINARY SELF CONTROL. People push my buttons and I get angry. I get angry and my mouth opens up. My mouth opens up when I'm angry and I start to say things which can be used against me - and our cause. How are these guys able to map so instantly from provocation to calmness, humor, or incisive logic? They have extraordinary self control.

(3) And courage? Can you IMAGINE the courage it took to stand up and be counted as these great humans have? They didn't stand up because they were ignorant of what could happen to them or because they didn't realize that the US government has no problem with assassination without a trial ... they knew full well that their life might well be forfeit by their disclosures and actions and proceeded anyway. Incredible courage.

meh

Maher is a schmuck. Plain and simple.

Even after Greenwald

Even after Greenwald corrected him, Maher still held to his unnecessarily inflammatory language. Maybe this is the comedian in him but why was it necessary to call Snowden nuts?

I still don't understand what he meant. At most, he could accuse Snowden of using hyperbolic language. But this whole bulk data collection, "slowing down the Internet" etc all supports exacting what Snowden said.

Why did Maher endorse and vote for a known felon and traitor?

Maher gets paid to crack jokes to conditioned Democrats. He doesn't appear to have much in the way or real perception, self control, or authentic courage.

He didn't even have the courage to call our Obama - our current Criminal in Chief - as Bush III. He can't see, or think or say ANYTHING which is outside his neo-liberal conditioning. He is, in his own way, a complete stooge.

I used to watch Maher all the

I used to watch Maher all the time and never missed an episode for years, but he got so partisan over the years I just couldn't stomach him anymore. he was the only reason why I kept HBO, which I have since got rid of.

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

this video is a great example of good liberal vs. bad liberal

I view Glenn as the good liberal: motivated by a sense of right and wrong, passionate about justice, and just uneducated about free market economics.

Maher, on the other hand, comes across as the typical bad liberal: motivated by an aura of self-perceived moral superiority, and more interested in squashing the opposition and protecting the status quo, than in sorting out right from wrong.

“The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants.” — Albert Camus

Devils advocate what I see Maher is confused on.

I think what Bill Maher is confused about is that when Edward Snowden says that "The government can go back in time and see everything you've ever done online" He thinks that is crazy. It's not a crazy statement because Edward Snowden crazy it's crazy that the government has this amount of capability to do such a thing. So yes the situation is crazy but the originator of the crazy is not Snowden its the NSA. It sounds crazy until you realize that it's a fact.

Breaking the Schlep indeed Abby!

Ms. Martin did a great deconstruction of this iconic piece of empty rhetoric!

Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them. - Frederick Douglass

Wow

She laid into him good. Well done.

Batsh*t Crazy??

I'll tell you batsh*t crazy. It's anyone who thinks these surveillance programs has anything to do with tracking, listening, discovering what a "red dirt" Arab is doing from a cave on the other side of the world. You could take every Al Qaeda activist in the world of 7.5 billion and fit them into my horse corral. And then to spend a trillion $ to track 'em? Who would believe that? Bill Maher?

The elephant in the room is and has always been (can you say Watergate?) about keeping up with and identifying political dissent. It's about them knowing what WE are thinking... not DOING. Hell, WE don't DO ANYTHING, but just in case WE might they will have nearly ALL the info needed to control a situation as it might unfold. Control is so much easier if YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONTROL and LEAD IT,(can you say war on drugs? arms smuggling? OWS? Taliban? Al Qaeda? Insurgents... anywhere in the world?). There you have it... and why.

God forgives always. Man forgives sometimes. But Nature never forgives.

Maher has always been a loathsome advocate of Power

I still remember his treatment of Ron Paul in his first appearance of 2007. Maher was surprised at how much criticism he (Maher) wound up getting and had to have Dr. Paul back on, and was a little more respectful.

Frankly, the good sign was that I don't think Maher's audience was too comfortable with his statement that Snowden's comments were, in Maher's words, "fuckin' nuts."

Maher is paid to propagandize for collectivism, all the while pretending he isn't. Thankfully, he isn't any good at it.

I liked Maher..

until the past couple years. I've gotten more conservative or something. He isn't as funny.

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

he gave a bunch of money to Obama

and he continues to try and justify it. He might be the last to admit he was wrong.

I've added the full interview

At the bottom of the post.

I give Bill a B+

Bill M is just naive!

Kind of like.. if you don't have anything to hide."How naive"
If your a target you would love to take back some of what you said.

The American people are naive children.

maher would rather

listen to the endless lies of obama, clapper, feinstein etc
isn't that what's totally batshit?

Of course Bill sees it as

Of course Bill sees it as batshit crazy. When you live in a cave, and he obviously does since he can't wrap his brain around the facts here, then you tend to see everything as bats and their sh*t.

Everything J. Edgar Hoover

Everything J. Edgar Hoover did was to fight terrorism.

And Bill Maher totally misses the point. The entire debate is about what he says isn't true or "nuts". They want to record everything so in the future if they suspect you of a crime, they can see everyone you called or e-mailed or said for as many years as possible.

Maher's just distorting Snowden's words.

So sweet to see Bill get all flustered

Glenn just smiles and makes Bill look like the one who's nuts.
