Downtown Detroit hit by massive sinkhole

"Irony" is the word for this sinkhole. How big will it get?

Officials learned there was a water main break about 14 feet underground, which caused the surface to collapse.

Officials say it could take days to repair a massive sinkhole that has opened up in downtown Detroit.

The sinkhole, which opened up Saturday just blocks away from the North American International Auto Show, is now about 14 feet deep, WJBK reports.

Traffic in the area is being disrupted as crews work to fix the hole, which is 10 feet wide, according to WWJ-AM.

When asked about the cause of the sinkhole, Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross said the city has “older substructures underneath the roadways.”

That's Nothin'

A guy in Florida was swallowed by the earth in his bedroom. He was never recovered.

That's not a sinkhole.

It's ancient aliens.

I thought ...

This was a public restroom in Detroit? ;)

Paul Krugman was contacted

Paul Krugman was contacted for his opinion on this matter. His statement, "This miracle came at the right time. As Detroit faces bankruptcy and an over-whelming exodus of citizens, these sink holes provide jobs. Jobs stimulate the economy."

We asked him if he believes the trend will continue.

"Well I absolutely hope so!" He spouted off with childlike intensity, "Detroit could be completely saved if we had a sink-hole show up at every intersection in Detroit. Just imagine the jobs! Why isn't the government funding research to create more sinkholes?"

This sinkhole is just a pothole to Krugman.

The $17.5T debt is also just an annoyance to Krugman. Keynesians are minimalists with these things, but maximalists about printing money.

o.o

And that sink hole has a name, Rothschild!

That is one way for the devil to

come in and out of Detroit unencumbered. Give Detroit back to the native Americans and get out...While at it...take Cleveland, Flint, Dayton, and Gary Indiana with you...

This hole may get big enough to swallow downtown.

Starting over will then be a lot easier. No demolition costs will be needed.

Detroit's street plan was

Detroit's street plan was platted out by Woodward around 1806 when Michigan set the Point of origin and became a territory.

When the interstates came through in the 1960s they targeted poor neighborhoods and divided them. Detroit became a town where commuters came and worked and fled to the suburbs.

Especially, after the 1967 riots caused by dislocation and corruption gave people cause for fear.

Eventually the Interstates pierced Pontiac and Flint leaving urban 'renewal' disasters there also.
