Portrait of Nystrom as a Young Man

I was looking through some old papers today and came across this blast from the past.

This is me in the kitchen of my apartment in Tokyo, probably in 1991 or so, which would make me about 23 years old. I had just graduated from college and rented that old, single room, second floor flat in Tokyo. There was only a squat toilet, and no shower or bath. Every other day or so I'd ride my bike to the sento, the public bath, where it cost about $3.00 to get myself clean.

The sliding wooden windows and doors had huge cracks at the jambs, which made it extra cold in the winter. The wind would blow right though, and everything would rattle and shake during earthquakes.

The Daily Paul was not even a twinkle in my minds eye. I'd never heard of Ron Paul.

I had those sunglasses that were just like the ones Andy Warhol was wearing in the poster on the wall behind me, and I thought the picture was clever.

Just found it today, and thought I would share.

:)

What were you doing in 1991?

The picture *is* clever!

I've always wanted to do the same with my Maxell poster.

Mike Tyson Punchout!

My cousin in Japan, who was about 12 at the time, loved that Mike Tyson game on the Nintendo. LOL! We used to play that all the time.

Yes!!!!!

My dad used to go over to my uncle's house to play Irish music when this game was popular. I used to get so excited about playing this game for hours in my uncle's basement as we didn't have video games.

Then I grew up and realized that I wanted to become a professional Irish musician, and that I had wasted countless hours playing video games, meanwhile some of the greatest exponents of the tradition were some of the ones I had passed up for "Punch out".

I get the idea, lol

These guys were trying to invent the iPad back in 1990 or so.

Unfortunately, the technology wasn't quite there yet, but this is a great read!

Apple got onto them, and tried to beat them to the punch. They came out with the Newton. LOL! Remember that thing? They had the right idea, the technology just wasn't there yet.

I was either in the womb, being born, or doing baby stuff

I was born on February 10, 1991. That was back when we lived on the big farm and all the roads around my community were still dirt. Most people from Tennessee talk about how much they love dirt roads, but those people probably haven't been on one. I still remember to this day everyone around bragging on the county and being ticked pink when they laid down the asphalt.

Another young man!

Your avatar makes you look so old!

Please excuse my ignorance, but who is that?

Why No. 7?

Here is a song for you.

What happened to the farm?

No.7's picture

It all started as a signature.

My name is Jack Daniel Clayton, and I've lived in Tennessee my whole life. Naturally I've heard about Jack Daniel's distillery down the road in Lynchburg more than once. One day I made the famous "Old No. 7" on the bottle my signature on my cell phone. So many people were curious as to what it meant I ended up making it one of my online user names. Eventually people on the DP shortened it to "No. 7".

The man in the picture is a young Andrew Jackson, President number 7, also from Tennessee. I consider Jackson a hero because of his rags to riches story. He made several mistakes as President but he was a fascinating man and definitely the coolest President.

As for the farm, well we moved off it in 95 when the old trucker that owned it died and his family sold it off. My dad built a house a few miles down the road and we've all lived there ever since. The old farmhouse has been restored but all the old cow pastures and hay/tobacco fields are lots filled with double wides.

Hrmm

Tennessee + No.7 = Jack Daniels
Avatar= Andrew Jackson ?

Those are my guesses!

Beginning to realize girls weren't so gross

Oh gosh and I really had the biggest crush on one in Sunday School. And if I dare say so Michael, you've made a bigger impact on me that Andy Warhol ever will.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Girls are definitely not gross

But a bigger impact than Warhol. Come on. You flatter me.

But someday, hopefully.

I hope all of us Ron Paul Alumni do.

A baby!

That makes you about 24 today. Young man!

I guess I'm about 22 years older than you now, and the only thing I can tell you is that the years go by in a flash! Above all, enjoy your life!

What's up in your neck of the woods these days? Still in Ohio?

We bought the house

We currently live in. 42 years young at the time.

On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Nice

I can't wait to settle down and live in a place for 20 years. I need a place for all my stuff!

I'm a pack rat!

I have every piece of mail ever sent to the Daily Paul. I need a basement for it, for safe keeping.

So you must be around 64 years young at this time?

The years go by fast, don't they? I can see them racing towards me.

My Wife's the pack rat.

Detroit is a cheap place to retire

Awesome pic Michael!

I think I was picking up a guitar for the first time around 1991.

How's the guitar playing going now?

Remind me what you're in for on the skill acquisition, Kevin?

It was probably more like the fall of 1991 but the overall point is the same. :)

I was waiting tables in a restaurant in Tokyo

When I heard that the bombs had started falling.

Emotional young man, I started crying, but there was work to do, tables to serve.

I remember Desert Storm. Were you actually there?

Ev'rywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy
Cause summer's here and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy
But what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
Cause in sleepy London town
There's just no place for a street fighting man
No
Hey! Think the time is right for a palace revolution
But where I live the game to play is compromise solution
Well, then what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's no place for a street fighting man
No
Hey! Said my name is called disturbance
I'll shout and scream, I'll kill the king, I'll rail at all his servants
Well, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
Cause in sleepy London town
There's no place for a street fighting man

I Remember the MSM Version Being Broadcast...

a year later on CNN. I missed out on the propaganda fed to the people in the States. I was at a bar watching the tube and thought to myself, "This is not how I remember it."

"Civil War"

"What we've got here is failure to
communicate.
Some men you just can't reach...
So, you get what we had here last week,
which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N' I don't like it any more than you men." *

Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D'you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of Deceased to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin'
For their promised land

And
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM
AS POPULAR WAR ADVANCES
PEACE IS CLOSER" **

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
And I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war
Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway
