Officials: Man who was carjacked, robbed of shoes gets frostbite walking to police station

A 29-year-old man who was punched, carjacked and robbed of his shoes got frostbite while walking to the Ypsilanti Police Department to report the crime early Tuesday morning, officials said.

As of Thursday, two of the three suspects were in custody and expected to be arraigned on carjacking charges, Ypsilanti police Detective Sgt. Thomas Eberts said.

Police say the 29-year-old picked the three men up to give them a ride in the area of Ballard Street and Michigan Avenue. It's unknown why the 29-year-old decided to give the men, whom he did not know, a ride, investigators said.

Eberts said at around 1:30 a.m. the men attacked the 29-year-old near the intersection of South Mansfield Street and Michigan.

“He (was) punched and pulled out of the car," Eberts said. "They (took) his wallet, his shoes and his car.”
