Officer charged with voluntary manslaughter in death of mentally ill NC teen

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. —A North Carolina police detective has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of a mentally ill teenager last month.

Bryon Vassey was indicted by a grand jury Monday in connection with the Jan. 5 death of Keith Vidal, 18. Vassey is a police detective in Southport.

A judge set Vassey's bond at $50,000 secured and ordered him to turn himself in by noon Wednesday.

Vidal, who had schizophrenia, was killed Jan. 5 in Boiling Spring Lakes about 20 miles south of Wilmington. Family members said they called police after Vidal picked up a screwdriver and threatened his mother.

A "bad shoot" ... wtf, are they hunting or something?

Good to see at least CNN is covering this nationally:

"After I reviewed the case I found that a crime almost certainly did take place," District Attorney Jon David told reporters Tuesday. "It was a 'bad shoot.' A grand jury has agreed."

hopefully..

as more, and sadly more, of these cases draw attention there will be fewer who are able to skate.. I'm sure this cop will be saying he was "protecting" the other officers as the boy was "actively trying to stab them in the neck" but I hope him saying "we don't have time for this" before shooting the boy will bite him in the a$$.

Anyone want to bet on the verdict?

Maybe he'll get some cash or a vacation from the union. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/us/payments-to-albuquerque...

=blink=

That certainly does send the wrong message

It sure does

You'd think somebody would make a thread about it.

End to payouts

Should be......

MURDER at the very Least!!

murder/vouluntary manslaughter

"The essential distinction between the two offenses is that malice aforethought must be present for murder, whereas it must be absent for manslaughter"

I guess, in other words, since the cop didn't come through the door with the express intent of killing the boy they didn't charge him with murder.
