A Strong Breed of Men

by Nelson Hultberg | Americans for a Free Republic

As most Americans are now painfully aware, our Constitution was not a perfect document, for there were certain powers granted to the government that should never have been granted. But if interpreted literally, it was a magnificent beginning because it valued freedom so highly. It was, and still is in conception and meaning, the greatest single political work in the history of man.

Should it not then be our goal as a people to return to a literal interpretation of this Constitution that valued freedom so highly and then set about to perfect it where it was flawed? Is it not then our job to reduce the tyrannical power of government and once again allow men to live, and trade, and interact as they see fit?

If freedom is right and just for men to possess, why on earth are we tolerating a government that will not allow us to be free? Why are we enduring a bloated and arrogant bureaucracy that takes over half our earnings every year and refuses to let us make our own choices in life? Why are we allowing social engineers in Washington to dictate how our businesses are to be run, where our children are to go to school, what prices we are to charge, what wages we are to offer, who we are to employ, who we are to associate with, what type of charities we are to support, how and when we are to retire, what is in our best interests, and what is not in our best interests? Are we sons of the heroes of '76 who pledged their lives and noble honor for the right to live as independent men, or are we naught but modern-day vassals to be formed and cared for by condescending bureaucrats?

Can anyone imagine the Yankee traders of the 19th century allowing OSHA agents to inspect their clipper ships and inform them that their safety precautions for putting out to sea were not up to code? Would Jim Bridger, Sam Houston, the prairie farmers, the cattle barons, and all the others who tamed the west have allowed their congressmen to confiscate the huge percentages of income we now tolerate so subserviently? How far does one suppose a bureaucrat would have gotten if he had tried to tell the old stage coach drivers that they must wear seat belts at all times while on the trail? What would the fiery Patrick Henry or the robustious Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys be doing in face of the onslaught of state welfarism that our "brave new worlders" are sniveling so for today? Would not our ancestors be up in arms in face of the legislative indignities that our politicians are perpetrating upon us everywhere?

If we as modern day Americans do not possess the spirit and the moral fiber to face life on our own merits as our forefathers did, what kind of life have we really lived? If we do not possess the courage to want freedom and to fight for it, as the Founders of this nation so heroically did, what kind of men and women are we? And if we are not to have the right to freedom, what possible vestige of meaning can we then hope to find in our journey through this world?

Since government's only means to implement its policies is through the use of force, it is forever the primary threat to freedom. Sooner or later we must come to grips with this.If we are to be a free (and thus a just) country, we as a people must restore to our government its strict constitutional limits on the use of force.

Such a limitation requires a strong breed of men, however, with a quality of character and nobility of soul. It requires the willingness to get from life what one gives to life. There can be no socialist government programs in the dreams of free men – only the exhilarating lure of a life that justly rewards our strengths and virtues. Our country was meant to be a grand and sprawling marketplace with the opportunity to pursue the glories that entice our passions amidst the raucous goldfields of human progress.

America's society of freedom is not for the timorous in search of the static life. It is a vast, evolving carnival of ideological ferment and shooting star discoveries – where sodbusters grow up to be Presidents and drop out inventors startle mankind with entrepreneurial exploits never before conceived. It is a poetic, existential pageant of burgeoning factories and hullabaloo towns amidst a backdrop of stoic steel will and sirenic romance ripening on the vines of quiet human courage. It is a providential kaleidoscope of chance, and fate, and the excruciating salvation of being able to stump the countryside for twenty years to finally realize one's aspirations. It is a perilous Eldorado journey by stalwart men of ability, who know no such word as fail and are willing to gamble their precious youth on liberating gifts they intend to build for their fellow men. It is a gallant, independent life where those born to risk garner mastodonic prizes, but where all levels of men are raised up by the daring of these sodbusters, and glory seekers, and shooting star inventors.

Such a grand and sprawling marketplace will, by necessity, be filled with failure as well as riveting success, adversity as well as graceful comfort, and disappointment as well as sublime happiness. It will hardly be perfect – such a restless, visionary society of heroic dreams and backbreaking toil – for men themselves can never be perfect. But it will be infinitely richer in spirit, and material, and joy, and common decency than the drab oppressive anthill society we see forming around us today.

This is freedom defined, and its restoration must become our mission as Americans. It's a tough, demanding gift, this thing called freedom, which is why so many today choose to distort its essence in shameless sophistry. But if there is to be hearty and meaningful life for men on this earth, there must first be freedom unadorned and clear. This is a timeless law of our existence – never to be tampered with.

New Sons of Liberty

Do Americans still possess the spirit that formed and built this country? I believe at least 50 percent of them do. That spirit is battered and hidden in the recesses of their minds, suppressed by decades of socialist / fascist propaganda in their schooling. But the great part of it is still there, and it can be reawakened if we will explain to America how the source of our political-economic problems lies in our one-party monopoly of Demopublicanism.

To do this we must build a massive vanguard of Jeffersonians, new Sons of Liberty to become the hub of freedom's wheel generating millions of dedicated activists to proselytize their fellow Americans about the need for a second political party – the National Independent Party – to challenge the Democrat-Republican monolith in Washington. America cannot be saved without such a challenge to the big government mandarins that rule so obtusely over our lives.

Who are these new Sons of Liberty? All those in this world who understand the power of ideas in the unfolding of history. You may be a teacher, a pastor, an entrepreneur, a banker, a salesman, an artist, a doctor, or a laborer. But whatever your calling, the common fabric you share is the understanding that ideas matter, that history moves toward the good because of right ideas, and that it moves toward evil because of wrong ideas. It is fallacy and sophistry that are the main precursors to dictatorship.

This is how the American Revolution was launched. Only a small portion of the colonists were actually for independence from Britain at the time. But they were highly dedicated, intelligent, and caught up fervently in the requisite ideas for a free country. Their cause began in the 1760s via Patrick Henry in Virginia along with Sam Adams and John Hancock in Massachusetts.

Out of this came the Boston Tea Party in December of 1773, which led to Patrick Henry’s famous “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death” speech to the Virginia legislature in March of 1775, then the battles of Lexington and Concord a month later. Thus began our fight for independence. The Sons of Liberty, acting as the hub of the wheel and its intrepid spokes, galvanized the colonies with the desire to challenge the tyranny of Britain. Their provocative thinking spread the idea of revolution throughout the land.

This kind of grassroots uprising can be launched again to challenge the tyranny of Washington, not with physical war, of course, but with political reform. AFR has a powerful plan for such reform, which is outlined in our Tea Party Patriot Report.

A very important point to understand is that the National Independent Party is different from all other "alternative party challengers" out there today such as the Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, American Patriot Party, etc. All these challengers marginalize themselves with radical policy proposals that the country is not ready for yet. This scares the daylights out of 95 percent of the voters, which prohibits these challengers from being attractive to nationally prominent candidates to head up their campaigns. No big league candidates will ever run on the LP, CP, APP tickets, or any other alternative party ticket. This dooms these parties to perpetual obscurity and 1 to 2 percent of the vote every Election Day.

The National Independent Party, however, does not succumb to this flaw. We have a platform comprised of Four Pillars of Reform for America's tax, monetary, immigration, and foreign policy systems that are crucial to the salvation of the country. These reforms will stop the growth of government cold and restore sanity to our way of life. Ironically these reforms are desired by 45 to 50 percent of the voters right now, and they can be implemented tomorrow, yet they are continually ignored by the Democrat-Republican monopoly that is interested only in more collectivist power for Washington.

Here then is why the National Independent Party is unique. Since we will not scare the voters with our platform we have the potential to recruit a nationally prominent candidate such as Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, or Scott Walker. This, no other alternative party has. It will make all the difference in the world because it will get our campaign into the national spotlight. It will mean the difference between 2 percent and 45 percent on Election Day.

We are far from a majority in America at this time. But as Sam Adams told his fellow countrymen in the build-up to the Boston Tea Party, "It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men." This is the purpose of the National Independent Party – to set American minds on fire with the ideals of freedom, justice, and restoration of the republic.

Fundamentals of Truth

The political and philosophical principles that spawned America are not transitory. They do not somehow melt away with the age of computers and high technology. Ideas of this stature never fade; it is man's will that wanes. If we are stumbling down the path to decay and authoritarian government, it is because we have deserted the wisdom that first formed us.

The National Independent Party is an effort to recapture that wisdom and show that there do exist some “fundamentals of truth” around which to build our lives. Not all is fleeting, incomprehensible, and perverse. Our modern world does not have to be a mass bureaucratized world where demagogic politicians and oligarchic judges dictate the conditions under which we are to live. It can be a free and beautiful world where we determine those conditions ourselves by the choices we make and the good we create in the marketplace of manly endeavor. But only if we regain our reason, only if we come to realize that individuals must be sacred and governments must be servants – for our times and tomorrow's times as well as those of our ancestors.

For all those men and women who still value the original legacy that our Founders bestowed upon us, for those strong-minded Americans of this dawning generation who are not about to relinquish the world to the squalid intellectuality of collectivism, there is a choice to be made and a great battle to be fought. Our cause is about that choice and that battle. The stakes have never been higher in our entire history. Come join the National Independent Party. Help us defeat the dark forces taking over our lives. Help us restore sound money and fair taxation to our land. Help us restore the shining city on the hill that Jefferson and the Founders so brilliantly envisioned.

Debate Challenge

Dear Mr. Hultberg,

As Chair of a new political Party also called Free Dominion
http://facebook.com/FreeDominionPoliticalParty
I firstly would like to commend you on this article's insightful critique of many issues currently facing the American public.

As another citizen involved in the political arena however, I do believe that some points of the National Independent Party persist untenable ideas
(ex. continuing taxation, credit fabrication as opposed to open civil standards, language mandates etc)

In the subsequent spirit of refinement while believing that the ideology of Dignitarianism proffers unique ideas such as public Trusts

I cordialily invite you to a historic civil debate which could possibly be arranged here on Daily Paul Radio with a willing host, and then to promote it through other liberty outlets as well

While ultimately acknowledging that we do share the common cause of free agency, I also believe that such a public event would be quite enlightening, informative and engaging.

Sincerely,

Thank you, Mr. Hultburg, for your true patriotism.

And thank you once again for one of the most insightful political books I have ever read, The Golden Mean - Libertarian Politics, Conservative Values.

It is obvious to me that you are a very intelligent and sincere patriot. I have every confidence in your character and motives, I just wish I could be as confident about your third party strategy.

Assuming that you could attract a first rate, high profile, libertarian candidate such as Rand Paul, I would work my tail off to help him win the election, especially if he were running against a conventional Demopublican line up.

Unfortunately, I fear it is more likely that your candidate would merely act as a spoiler, in a year when we have the best chance (since Goldwater '64) of actually nominating a decent candidate for president. The last thing I would want to do is burn our bridges within the GOP only to find ourselves the proud owners of yet another nonviable third party fighting over the table scraps of the liberty movement.

I believe this is a very reasonable way to go.

I believe this is a very reasonable way to go. If no other.

I've been begging people to consider the idea of going back to interpreting their Constitution literally - with ZERO social OR economic agenda - for two years now on these forums.

I am glad to see someone appealing to the same way of restoring America, and who can write in English better than I do wrt. politics.

I can only hope enough that your fellow Americans will be capable to understand the importance of the point, to set these irresistible fires of liberty in the people's minds again.

This country was blessed with one of the simplest texts ever written as the foundations for a conscious nation of a free people, and guess what had to be destroyed first... in a process which started decades and decades ago?

The betrayal always starts against language.

Noun: lie.

You don't want the lie to poison the very document which brought people together around a central new idea - liberty.

Yet, that's exactly what happened.

Q.E.D.

Give your literal Constitution a second chance, indeed.

She deserves it, IMO.

"Cyril" pronounced "see real". I code stuff.

This is a call to arms, Nelson!

I like it.

A real third party has not been tried in a while.

But these are times in flux. All the elements are falling into place. The absolute disgust with both parties, the uncertainty - economic and otherwise. We know the old way isn't working.

Time for a new way. Time at least to try.

There hasn't been a credible third party candidate in the internet era.

I think Ron Paul showed what is possible. He was the match that struck, but didn't quite catch.

There is a match that is waiting to be lit. There is a lot of pent up energy. The trick is to find the release point, and then manage to catch the energy.

It is possible. The timing is right.

The trick is getting all the factions to unite. Ron Paul was able to do it. Rand isn't. That is Rand's primary weakness, at least in this backwater of the movement. For whatever reason, he is divisive. And people here want to hang on to the ghost of Ron Paul, or chase after the promise of Rand.

It's like they're barn sour. Don't want to go out into the daylight. Like it in the dark barn.

We need to give them an experience to get excited about. A third party run for the 21st century.

He's the man.

Questions

1)"for there were certain powers granted to the government that should never have been granted."
-Which powers?

2)"But if interpreted literally, it was a magnificent beginning because it valued freedom so highly"
-Which parts value "freedom" so highly? Does he mean freedom for the individual or freedom for the governmental?

3)"Would not our ancestors be up in arms in face of the legislative indignities that our politicians are perpetrating upon us everywhere?"
-They were up in arms...are you ready to be up in arms? They picked up arms and killed the kings men.

Don't Give me Liberty, I'll get up and get it myself!

NIP it in the bud!

I enjoy the party name for the above reason exclusively. Aside from that, the term "National" makes me throw up a little each time I read or hear it. Nice piece though, your enthusiastic speechwriter style is filled with funky imagery* and did inspire me to click the links and [again] review your four pillared platform. It's quite straightforward. Simply mind our borders and money [-that shall be the extent of the law! :D]. Sounds rather Constitutional.
