Rand Paul: Without change, GOP will "not win again in my lifetime"

By Jake Miller | CBS News |February 14, 2014, 12:36 PM

Just days after warning his party that it will lose its electoral grip on Texas if it doesn’t broaden its appeal, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., offered an even more dire prediction on Thursday: Forget losing Texas – the GOP might never win a presidential election again if it doesn’t change its tune.

“I think Republicans will not win again in my lifetime…unless they become a new GOP, a new Republican Party,” Paul said during an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck that aired Thursday. “And it has to be a transformation. Not a little tweaking at the edges.”

The Kentucky Republican said the GOP needs to do a better job of tailoring specific messages to specific groups.

With young people, he said, he would stress an opposition to excessive government surveillance and a respect for personal privacy. And among minority communities, he said, a message of criminal justice reform – including changes to the “war on drugs” and sentencing laws – would resonate.

“There are many people who are open among all these disaffected groups, who really aren’t steadfast supporters of Obama or an ideology,” he explained. “I think they’re open to listening, but we have to have a better message and a better presentation of it.”

Paul said he welcomes a robust debate within the party about how to move forward.

Well I sure hope so...I'll do anythng I possibly can (Short of..

...voting for a democrat) to hurt the GOP.

Just the way they hurt Dr. Paul (and us) the last 8 years.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Very bold thing to say. Show

Very bold thing to say. Show me one recent example where a major party presidential candidate, years before he/she was likely to enter the fray, said his party will not win the presidency in his lifetime without "a transformation.. not a little tweaking at the edges." Commentary like that is reserved for longshots. Ballsy. Smart too. Brands him as the change that is needed.

10-15 million more voters need to believe in non-interventionism (liberty) at home and abroad to change America. Minds changed on Syria. Minds changing on privacy. "Printing money" is part of the dialogue. Win minds through focus, strategy.

Let the party die like it's

Let the party die like it's planned too.
At this point it would be easier to start a new party without the corruption than to "takeover" this corpse.
The people WANT something DIFFERENT, WE should be that different.
It almost happened with the tea party. Too bad that was taken over folded into the RATpubliCONS and demonized.

Change the GOP?

Here's my take:
Trying to change the GOP is like trying to reverse the Mississippi river.
Anyone (including Rand) who thinks they can suddenly change the GOP into something different than the Democrat party is living in a sunshine & lollipops dream state.
Look where the rubber meets the road. Look at the polls - the Republican base wants Christies and Huckabees. They want a firm government hand on their shoulder and gobs and gobs of welfare. A rogue candidate here and there won't dent the status quo.
It goes against everything we are taught, but a third party is the only viable liberty option left.
When a third party rises, as we see happening with the Libertarian party, one of the two current parties will die - their membership will drain away. Some will go into the remaining party and the rest will go into the new third party.

No Sh*t Sherlock! I have been saying this since the GOP supported McCain in 2008. And I was not to far off with the dimwit they supported in 1996.

Joined the Liberty Movement in Anchorage, Alaska, 1977. Ron Paul supporter since 1983.

Change! I'm telling you, we need change!

Rand isn't talking about

Rand isn't talking about changing the US of A like Obama did. He's talking about changing the GOP. More or less bringing it back to its roots. There's a big difference.

In other words...

Rand said, "Endorse change! Romney 2016!"

Rand ought to find support from these radio host

I think these two, highly-favored, conservative/libertarian talk-radio hosts, (my personal, listening political-labeling, not their known self-descriptions), had great things to say of Rand, and his stance during his 13-hour filibuster. It contrasts well against McCain and Graham's poor responses.

Here's the closing remarks from a brief interview with Mark Steyn, by Hugh Hewitt on his show:

HH: And with 30 second, Mark Steyn, it does seem to me as well that Lindsey Graham and Senator McCain are simply clueless about where their party is, and what is being, the communications revolution.

MS: Yeah, I think you’re absolutely right on that. You know, John McCain and Lindsey Graham are mercurial figures, but on this side, you know, Rand Paul demonstrated how to be effective, how to use the new media, and how to do yourself and the party a lot of good.

The GOP has to become the Libertarian Party

but still call itself the Republican Party and act like it's something new so their own people can swallow it.

Essentially, that's what Rand is saying.

Silly, fine, whatever, just hurry and catch-up already.

Too bad Republicans, even those that claim they woke-up, can't see the obvious.

we can't...

Rand and Glenn...

They both keep telling us we can take a hard-core socialist organization like the GOP and somehow change it's philosophy in a few short years...

I would agree if I didn't

I would agree if I didn't think the elections were rigged. Unfortunately, I do. My own district has computerized voting machines with no paper trails at all. When I questioned it in the 2007 primary, I was reamed over the coals. And after we all know now what the NSA does to suck up metadata from just about everywhere, I believe without a doubt there are controls over the elections. That's why the GOP wants to end caucuses so badly too. You can't quite control a caucus as easily. It's the same every election. People will start questioning legitimacy of machines prior to the election and the same answer is always given; it's too late to change them now......every single time. When Obama announced last year that Reince Priebus was going to help him "streamline the elections", I thought "oh no." And now Priebus acts like he's helping the GOP??? There are no two parties; it's one big corrupt entity (made up of many many corrupt entities) who don't want us to figure out nor regain our control. But I do believe the citizens of this country have the power to take it back but they have to see it first. It's kind of like what the good witch of the north said to Dorothy near the end of "The Wizard of Oz." You had the power all along, you just had to discover it yourself (maybe not those exact words).

Register to be a poll watcher/counter in your precinct

I did that last elections, and although I was a peon, if you stay with it long enough, you can be the leader in charge. At least I got to see some real numbers, so I would know if there was a major fraud taking place if someone got less votes then what I saw. It's a small start, but an important one.

Were you counting paper ballots...

or watching a computer screen?

We were counting the paper ballots

and matching them with the poll machine *receipts* which look like ticker tapes.

Initially, we would greet the voter, validate who they were by asking for ID, and comparing it to the list.

Then when polls closed, it's counting time.

When you finished, the team leader would verify your stack of ballots, Then, we would count other Teammates' ballots, just as a triple check...so you get to see a lot of numbers. then we get to see them go into the bins, and sealed.

Ultimately, it goes to the team leader, and they take it from there. THAT's the position we need to aspire to...

In rigged puppet elections how can anyone say this?

Follow the money that finances the media, polls, the two puppet parties and their sold out puppet pig candidates, follow the false compounding national debt issued federal reserve money past the layers of corporations to those who arrange the election puppet show.

Having a puppet make this statement is just incredible. Probably just some more of that betrayal chess stuff. But its ok after all he is the son of Ron.

PS. Rand if the Rothschild family decide to have a Repugnant party be the next shill puppet of the false debt slaves of America that's exactly what the zio-media, puppet candidates, shill polls, and fake vote count will reflect.

So its got to be more of the high level political chess that I hear some talk of. I call it BS and lies but hey political chess sounds better.

Guilt by association

Rand is being smeared for having associated with powerbrokers. Despite photos with a Bush, and money from Rove, Rand does not seem to have been changing his rhetoric. Instead, Rand seems to be changing the GOP.

I remember hearing a close advisor to Ron Paul saying, after the 2012 Republican Convention, that though he completely supported Ron for his principles, we needed a politician who could do the politics if we wanted to win.

I'm watching Rand carefully. Is he a sellout? Or is he mastering the art of politics? Time will tell.

Alex Jones

People who use to work for Alex Jones are bashing Rand right now.

Great stuff,

thanks! Been saying this kind of stuff for years now. You can't save the system, save yourself instead!

Rand's right.

I won't vote dem, I just won't vote at all.

That will do it every time. Let it burn.

Or, embrace the independent middle. Broaden the party and grow up, gop, or you will remain irrelevant.

Wrong Problem

I don't care what the message is. I expect them to lie.

The only thing that matters are their principles, if any.

Rand is taking on a big battle

I hope he has the stamina. The key is for us to be talking the same in our local GOP. He has to have support from the field.

Undo what Wilson did

Rand is right

The gop showed me that they don't want the Ron Paul supporter's vote. So I listened . . . . and voted Dem and I will again until they run Rand or Ron.

Thomas Jefferson

They are the dems hahaha

They aren't afraid of democrats they are one. They fear a real third party rising and they fear becoming irrelevant. Any rise in a third party kills their little click and it makes them irrelevant. If they change they are marginalized and have to share power. They are pinched and they know it. The question is which do they fear worse sharing power or irrelevance. Remember they still have their mother party (Democrats) and the mother party is loving stealing their power away from them. Si if they chose to hold their power the Democrats are going to eat them. and if they eat them a second party must rise. They really are in check mate.

You are hilarious. That is exactly what they wanted us to do. You fell right into the trap. Oh boy...

As long as Rove has a national media voice..

the GOP is dead. He is the biggest loser ever and somehow he keeps getting a voice; probably Bush money. Is there any new voice he supports? He has purposely torpedoed anyone outside of the Bush family establishment and purposely defeated them. Take Sarah Palin and Christine O'Donnell, whom he screwed as soon as she won the primary; I hold him and him only for her defeat...she had a chance but when her own party goes after her? What a pig.

and run Reince Priebus out of town on a rail.

Less govt. surveillance???

scaling back on the war on drugs? What Rand does not understand is that the GOP party hacks would rather have a democrat win, than either of the two aforementioned things happen. This party is toast, and deserves to be. I believe Rand is correct, they would have a chance if they did some of those things, but my guess is they will become more collectivist, and attempt to pander to groups with more "goodies".

problem is

they can't out pander the party of pandering without losing every conservative vote and causing a third party rise.
