Trollology - Internet Trolls Really Are Horrible People, Narcissistic, Machiavellian, Psychopathic, and Sadistic.

Ha! Slaps Knee. It's about time somebody did a paper on what we all already know, and especially those of us behind the scenes here know, first hand. (Honestly from the inside, it's almost comical in a sense.)

In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics.

...surely is good at recognizing trolls.

Because he is one HIMSELF!

Time to INVESTIGATE the investigators of 9/11. PROSECUTE the prosecutors. EXPOSE the cover-up.

Anonymity is the biggest

Anonymity is the biggest factor contributing to internet trolling. People say nasty stuff because they don't experience any social backlash because at the end of the day nobody really knows who they are.

Additionally it's a lot harder to look somebody in the face in person and call them a $%@#^%#!& than it is to post it on a web forum.

Does anyone want to create a group?

Hey does anyone want to create a group to counter the trolls? I think we should. I do what I can to go on as many news sites and others to counter the pro-government responses dealing with subjects as the NSA and others. Anyways anyone up for it, message me.

We can be the bible thumpers of liberty.

If they're the kind of trolls the article is about

then that's what they want you to do. They're hurling insults and being abrasive to provoke a response. If there's a clear message from that slate article it's that the kind of mindless trolls who do nothing but insult and disrupt aren't paid trolls, because there are enough people out there with a personality disorder that drives them to do that kind of thing for free. They're the kind of person who would be equally happy spewing bile on dailypaul as on dailykos.

Now, if you mean people who post anti-liberty sentiments and seem to genuinely believe what they're saying, and aren't being insulting about it, and seem to be open to discussion -- that narrows it down to a small percentage! -- then okay, a clear response made in a polite manner could be effective. In theory anyway, I don't know that I've ever seen it actually happen. With everything else going on in a typical comments area it's like trying to have a serious conversation in a very, very loud bar.

I Wonder...

I wonder how much the "Hired Trolls" make an hour?

Why can't we delete these?

Don't listen to that lying b-a-st-a-r-d!

I said NO!

Listen Lol.

I say yes! Lol. :)

I'm amazed that he never brought up the maturity factor. I mean, this trolling post, while hopefully amusing, would fail the maturity test and is an obvious case of trolling.

Wow, trolls

" Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others)."

So, are they saying that Obama is a troll??? That sure describes him.

What I gather from reading that article is that internet troll = politician.

Hey dude, I bet you could write a chapter in that book;-)

Don't feed the trolls. It will make you feel good to ignore them.

This research suggests that feeding trolls encourages them.

Thanks, bigmikedude!

Sounds 'bout right.

This cracked me up good: "The more beautiful and pure a thing is, the more satisfying it is to corrupt." Since I was trying to put that into the context of an internet thread, a beautiful and pure internet thread.

Interesting stats

To be sure, only 5.6 percent of survey respondents actually specified that they enjoyed “trolling.” By contrast, 41.3 percent of Internet users were “non-commenters,” meaning they didn’t like engaging online at all. So trolls are, as has often been suspected, a minority of online commenters, and an even smaller minority of overall Internet users.

But it goes to confirm what we have seen here. Selective banning of 'trolls' has made this place a much more pleasant place to be.

I typed it in all caps. That means I'm right.

Things I learned at the Daily Paul number 127; if I type in all caps I am right. Especially with the word troll.

'nuff said.

How about that? Does that make me a troll? Or a Paultard? Paultard 2.0? Randtard?

I do wonder if we'll see a repeat of that particular phenomenon.

No, it makes you correct.

For Ron would have won, excepting the trolls also steal things as we all learned.

Frankly, untill we learn to " steal " better, I think our goose is cooked. But considering the very best and brightest of the younger generation of voters is coming our way, I'd say we have an outside chance of out hacking the hackers in the future. At least I hope we do, as I'm to damn old, and too dam sick, and too damn tired to fight Quixoiti's windmills.
So I'm not as good as I once was, but if need be I can be better than that, once.

God bless
