Media Blacks Out New Snowden Interview The Government Doesn’t Want You to See

This past Sunday evening former NSA contractor Edward Snowden sat down for an interview with German television network ARD. The interview has been intentionally blocked from the US public, with virtually no major broadcast news outlets covering this story. In addition, the video has been taken down almost immediately every time it’s posted on YouTube.

In contrast, this was treated as a major political event in both print and broadcast media, in Germany, and across much of the world. In the interview, Mr. Snowden lays out a succinct case as to how these domestic surveillance programs undermine and erode human rights and democratic freedom.

He states that his “breaking point” was “seeing Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, directly lie under oath to Congress” denying the existence of a domestic spying programs while under questioning in March of last year. Mr. Snowden goes on to state that, “The public had a right to know about these programs. The public had a right to know that which the government is doing in its name, and that which the government is doing against the public.”

i'm very impressed with him. he's seems to be extremely careful about only disclosing info that is in the public interest and not disclosing classified info that would put America at risk. he's very professional and much more mature than i was at his age.

Video gone; but I found a full transcript.

German TV put huge pressure on Liveleak with copyright issues, and the video is gone. A full transcript of the interview is still online here.

My favorite part is this:

Interviewer: "President Obama obviously is in the very moment not quite convinced of that because he said to you are charged with three felonies and I quote: "If you Edward Snowden believe in what you did you should go back to America appear before the court with a lawyer and make your case." Is this the solution?"

Snowden: "It’s interesting because he mentions three felonies. What he doesn’t say is that the crimes that he has charged me with are crimes that don’t allow me to make my case. They don’t allow me to defend myself in an open court to the public and convince a jury that what I did was to their benefit. The espionage act was never intended, it’s from 1918, it was never intended to prosecute journalistic sources, people who are informing the newspapers about information that’s of public interest. It was intended for people who are selling documents in secret to foreign governments who are bombing bridges who are sabotaging communications not people who are serving the public good. So it’s I would say illustrative that the president would choose to say someone should face the music when he knows the music is a show trial."

Thank You for posting!

That was so good! Young Snowden speaks extremely well!

I really like the part about the magnificent search engine. That is some toy! Maybe we shouldn't blame them so much? ;) Sounds amazing! Maybe we can turn the NSA into an amusement park and pay off the world debt by renting out use of that search engine. I'm sure there would be a long line of people waiting to try it out even if no info was breached or kept. We should be complaining about their monopoly on getting to have all the fun and experience all the wonderment. I'd like to see it work...Journalists? (show it to us)

Thanks for posting!

You just gave me an idea...

Maybe we should, like Asange did in Australia, help him run for a senate post.

Is this interview old? I'm pretty sure I already saw this on the DP a couple weeks ago. Or maybe even last month.

Nothing Gets Past the DP!

Yes, we all liked it the first time.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

Yes, it was posted before. But

maybe for others, too, they weren't able to play it at that time. I forget what it said, but if I recall correctly, it was a non-friendly message that came onto the screen saying I couldn't access it. I tried a few times, same thing. I left a reply to that effect. But then at some point either it started working or I found the clip someplace else. Anyway, it's a good interview. For those who missed it, I'm glad it was re-posted.

The most powerful point is the very last answer

(Start listening at 29:00.) Obama said that if Snowden believes what he did was right, then he should return home and make his case in court. BUT the crimes Snowden is accused of committing would NOT be tried in open court -- the Espionage Act (and presumably the Patriot Act too) forbids a public trial. Snowden would be tried in secret by a kangaroo court. Right there is why the media isn't carrying this story. The American system of "justice" is a dirty joke.

I have yet to see this

I have yet to see this interview. I tried to watch this one and there is no audio. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd see the day the United States resembles the Soviet Union more than a free America.

Aaahhh! I finally found a

Aaahhh! I finally found a good copy with audio. Parts most important points I guess.....president is the one keeping it going. Is not useful for stopping actual terrorists. Being used for corporate espionage. And the government empowers individuals with special skills to be used in corporate espionage with little oversight. He used to work for CIA so probably knows quite a bit. Well, no wonder he's being threatened by govt. officials.
