This is what $16 billion looks like.

Right here. Click it.

I just saw that Facebook bought them for $16 billion.

GULP! Sixteen billion!

Sixteen billion is a lot of dough

Here's a little info, from Wikipedia.

Every time I use an application like this (Line is similar, and is what I used in Taiwan, and its primary innovation seems to be weird emoticons called "stickers.") I feel like I'm getting that much closer to becoming a robot.

It is very virtual. You feel like you're that much closer to becoming a robot when you use it, using hieroglyphs to communicate with other humans.

Here's Peter Schiff's take

http://www.lewrockwell.com/2014/02/peter-schiff/is-mark-zuck...

So, he says there's no way the user database could be of much value to Zuckerberg because he already has contacts for most of those people.

But, could it be worth something to him for google NOT to get hold of the user database?

It's still either not worth $19 billion or $19 billion is a meaningless number.

Now all the cool kids will stop using that too.

Grandma on facebook. Mom following you over on What's App....

Someone needs to come up with a new one for the hipsters and keep it quiet.

Shhhh.

They could care less about the software

It's about the users. User count ranges from 190 million monthly active users to 400 million. That is a per user cost of $45-100 of some prime demographic consumers. Now they just have to monetize it.

"Monetizing attention"

That's what they call it.

I wish the DP could do that too, lol.

Whazzapp

by-passes SM card "WhatsApp "has done to SMS on mobile phones what Skype did to international calling on landlines."[8]
Don't axe me how.
I'm too stoopid to understand how they do it.

AND it's Facebook's ticket to China where they are currently prohibited. Whatsapp is there already. Dwarf's AmeriKa.

SMS market generates $150B year

Saw someone post that the global SMS market generates $150 billion a year. Whatsapp appears to be a much more legit utility than some fad like Snapchat. No one is managing a business via Snapchat.

Also Facebook using their inflated stock price to acquire it (well $12-15B worth) puts it more in perspective.

19B, for this ?

It's no angry birds, so what does it do that we don't know about?

So it does cross between varrious platforms/ phones, nice. But so does facebbok, it's IM, which Facebook didn't have, so it generally fits a void they had.

And: I prefer my people, pink, warm and face to face; I'm not a texter.

to launder ill gotten money.

That just occurred to me too.

Is Facebook dumping their dollars in anticipation of their eventual collapse? After they file for bankruptcy that $19 bil will be sitting somewhere waiting for Shmuckerberg and his cronies, untouchable.

Facebook's making a ton of

Facebook's making a ton of money aside from the fact their ads are very ineffective. If AOL is still around, FB will be here for decades...as many others noted, they're turning into Microsoft just buying up all the competition.

LOL Well, since I don't own a cell phone

I have no idea what I was looking at.
I LOVE being a cell phone luddite!! I can't imagine being enslaved by those things. They don't give you a moment's peace. I had some guy over the other day to look at doing some work on the house and every few minutes his 'chain of enslavement' was pinging him for attention, and he, of course, answered the 'call'. wow
I just kept thinking, 'How sad.'
Made me feel so free.

I don't see how that can be worth $16 billion

from just app subscription fees, especially considering someone might come out with a more popular one tomorrow. It must be money changing hands over something else, consumer data perhaps.

I don't either. Which means apparently

So, Facebook saw people

leaving their site in drones, freaked out and bought up one of the larger, worldwide mobile messaging apps. Great, now the Facebook/NSA are going to have a complete, real-time profile on pretty much everybody in the world.

However, if this is the step towards the development of a "modern equivalent of hieroglyphs" as Veritas put it below, I guess its a give and take. Ha.

"It’s not pessimistic, brother, because this is the blues. We are blues people. The blues aren’t pessimistic. We’re prisoners of hope but we tell the truth and the truth is dark. That’s different."

Re: Line

I haven't heard anything about this except for what is posted here, but I think these things will only further discount the meaning, effectiveness and genuine quality of verbal and written communication.

The text message slang detracts from language as it is.

To move to purely pictorial communication does seem like taking a step backwards, for all of the intricacies and specificalities that modern language is able to communicate can not conceivably be communicated with pictures. If we are to create a modern equivalent of hieroglyphs, this could perhaps have implications for the literacy of future generations.

Could we be looking at a sort of unified, digitized, iconographic world language if concepts like this "Line" are to further evolve?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

What you said at the end.

Could we be looking at a sort of unified digital world language if concepts like this "Line" are to further evolve?

There is no going back, to writing, and face to face communication. We're only going to go further in. Eventually, we'll all be living in the computer. That's my belief. Eventually we'll be dependent on the machines. Really, in a way, we already are.

Wall E!

That was an awesome movie! Its pretty deep, the robot is very likable, and the story told about the human race/technology/earth is very interesting. DPer's should dig it. Must see.
