"There will be a libertarian president." - Joe Trippi

http://youtu.be/ZYhgoBaxONA

Interesting conversation about the prospects of libertarian candidates at the presidential level in '16 and beyond by prominent operative Trippi.

The school choice part

We won't be able to have school choice until the tax method for school funding is changed. The general problems of government intervention cause the unintended consequences of school quality segregation. If a rich neighborhood has good schools because they pay more in taxes to fund those schools then the vote of the public during board meetings and such will keep the money and the kids separate. Most problems cannot be fixed without curing the root cause of the issues, which incidentally usually gets the least focus. Maybe an interim fix of something like a 'premium' charge for moving schools could be done. It would probably shed light on the root problem and help move along a real cure. Out of the box thinking in many areas might help shed light on issues of free choice without scaring people to the point they won't listen.

This was an excellent interview full of tons of info

I'm grateful to Reason.TV for producing such an informative and authoritative interview. There is much to learn from it. Thank you gee_blee for bringing it to us!

Dogmatically, I disagree with various statements here and there throughout the video, but what I gained in new perspective is tremendous. Watching this and pulling out what truths I found, I was able to apply a fresh perspective to many of my firm views.

While I think that our current system makes votes virtually worthless politically, they are still virtually "free" to do. For this reason, I encourage you all to vote your conscience, even if only for the purpose of helping you identify to yourself what your conscience actually says. As a method of speech, I hope you value your vote as something incredibly valuable. As a method of enacting change, I hope you don't expect anything productive. Remember that the way to change the country is through hearts and minds.

If a Libertarian is elected president, don't consider it a means to an end but rather a sign of the times.

Bump

For the fist comment I agree with on this thread. Thanks

i guess it was squished under the heal of the establishment

...so well that he missed the big fight at the Republican Convention the last time around. With that in mind, I think change will come faster than he thinks. I do agree about it being a great opportunity for it to happen outside of the Democrat and Republican parties though. One way or another it will take the inclusion of the libertarian minded Dems and Independents. That or it will take longer for the young to take over. I am hoping people stop letting themselves be divided however.

When Trippi is on a talk show he speaks for the "left"

to counter the "right" so the show is fair and balanced. Because of the candidates he has represented, I usually mute the channel or dismiss the majority of what he says. After viewing this post, I actually listened to the entire interview, then, looked at Michael's comment below, and did some internet searching about him. I found his knowledge of political strategy very interesting. Too bad he doesn't use his expertise to support liberty candidates.

That's like saying

there will be an atheist pope: theoretically possible, but quite improbable.

Too late

Pope Boniface VIII was supposedly an atheist.

can you provide a reference for that?

that sounds interesting

It seems it was an accusation

It seems it was an accusation by one Guillaume de Nogaret aka William of Nogaret. I had said "supposedly" because William was a Counselor to King Philip IV of France who had a feud with said Pope over temporal authority (specifically taxation). He may have been an atheist but it does seem an awfully convenient accusation; and the extent of the disagreement can be seen in that Boniface was given another trial posthumously - he was dug up and tried by an ecclesiastical court for sins, crimes, and heresy. Some of his wrongs were well known at the time - such as simony (selling Church offices/positions) - for which Dante wrote him into Hell.

He's wrong.

That simple.

It's not even possible.

A true libertarian would not agree to be president in the first place, and in the second... The populace would rather download the latest so-and-so's sex tape than to trouble themselves with the boring job of defending themselves.

Sick.

Disagreement

There is nothing wrong with principled leadership and engaging the political arena--be it Libertarian, Anarchist or a new ideology which I call Dignitarian (exercising the prerogative of individual choice concerning public domain).

In fact, such a lack arguably has led to the current predicament facing politics today

You're very right about the

You're very right about the second part, sadly.

As for the first part, you seem to be confusing libertarianism broadly with anarchism specifically.

Really?

Only way this is happening is if AIPAC & Israhell approve. If they do, you know which way it will go. They are at the money gates.

Trippi misses his own conclusion

He recognizes we need more choice for education; it's crazy to have one size fits all education.

Why did he miss this same point for government?

Why do we need a one size fits all government?

That's the worst thing we could possibly have no choice in.

I was reading Trippi back when I was starting the DP

How's this for a title:

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED: Democracy, the Internet, and the Overthrow of Everything

http://www.amazon.com/THE-REVOLUTION-WILL-NOT-TELEVISED/dp/0...

I'm still waiting on that last part, lol.

mike he said something very interesting about what a party does

And you could do it on this site with a few tweaks:

1)platform
2)money raising
3)organization

This site could be a headquarters for all three of the above.

Trippi pretty much said that party platforms are a joke.

The politicians do and say whatever they want in spite of the party platform. The platforms are only intended to sway voters with dogma. I think the DP is more about awareness and education not steering us into any stated goal.

When someone here feels strongly about a candidate they are able to post "money bomb" info. It stays at the top of the must read list only if others are willing to support that candidate.

As to organization, have you ever tried to herd cats? I think this is about as organized as it should get. When enough people feel strongly about someone or an issue they are free to work together to make it happen. That is the beauty of the DP.

ummm...

When you wrote this response to my post, what was your objective?

That is pretty Trippi

He speaks with objective knowledge of politics. imo

INTJ?

Analysts are common among libertarians (objectivists by nature).

Too bad he works for statist party candidates.

As I always say, some libertarians are born, but the rest are made by government, or, as he described, by their statist tools: the Establishment members of the dominant parties.

Gary Johnson seems to have been driven out by the unfair treatment he got during the GOP primary, just as Ron Paul was driven out back in the 1980's, so it's clear that this has become a battle between libertarians and statists, instead of the old battle between liberal and conservative. That's a good thing.

I look forward to the day when every party has a libertarian candidate on the ballot.
