Austin Police Chief forced to issue apology regarding Jogger arrest comments

Austin police chief Art Acevedo has issued an apology for comments he made during a press conference yesterday concerning the arrest of a female jogger near the University of Texas campus on Thursday.

Acevedo dismissed the controversy over police handling of a jaywalking jogger, saying 'Cops are actually committing sexual assaults on duty so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas.'

the WORST thing to come out of Cali and settle in Austin. Would LOVE to see this jackass get the boot.

Was this a public safety issue or just revenue collection?

So the cops in Austin just sit around with nothing better to do but wait for pedestrians to cross the street illegally? Wow, Austin must have such little crime that they otherwise can't justify the size of the police force they keep and therefore must have a need to write citations just to pay the officer's salaries.

On the initial post there was info

saying there was, actually, an issue with jaywalkers, in particular college students wearing headphones (or was in on cell phones?), in any event, neither observing the traffic lights nor paying attention, expecting cars to just slow down or stop... in time! Apparently it was reported just after the incident with the jogger than some pedestrian was hit by a bus. Nonetheless...

none of that justifies the treatment of that women, ARRESTED and HANDCUFFED. What a horrible thing. I'm so grateful it was caught on film.

Did you read below, people's experiences in Communist China? That America is becoming *more* repressive than communist countries is tragic.

Observably, the notion that "two wrongs don't make a right" is still foreign to some "public servants".

Or what did I miss?

Pretty mild apology. He said

Pretty mild apology. He said it was a good thing he wasn't on scene because he wouldn't have been so easy on her. My God don't these idiots even think of what's coming out of their mouths?? They are so used to lording over the mundane that they really don't see the stinking attitude they have. I'm traveling back to US from China today and I have to tell you that something like this would NEVER happen in China. The mean "commies" would never treat a jogger like this not to mention I've never seen anyone told not to cross the street wherever and whenever they want. Yes, China is a BE-itch if you try to protest but at least in the little areas of life there's a bit MORE "freedom" here...

Beware the cult of "government"...

i had the same experience in China

I knod exactly what you mean. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Commie at all. But what you say about the everyday freedoms and freedom from harassment in China for petty things is 100% true.

There weren't traffic cops everywhere, no seat belt laws, no red light cameras, etc. One of the things that really stood out was when my wife & I bought tickets on the sleeper train from Shanghai to Bejing, we paid CASH, no ID required. Try doing that in the USSA on greyhound or any other long-distance bus service. Because freedom to travel anonymously is a benchmark of liberty and the US has largely lost that right.

also, we stayed at a very nice hostel (4 stories with gym, sparkling clean, etc) right near the bejing train station. no reservation required. $21 a night cash!!

it was an awesome time. how long were you there?

We go about twice a year to

We go about twice a year to visit relatives. The big problem is China is copying the US in big brother tactics. The train ticket will require valid ID starting sometime this year. Still, my wife did a lot of banking for her mother this last week after her father died and she was able to do all kinds of cash transactions at the bank with no ID. She even cashed a check (6000 rmb I think) at a bank with no ID, just endorse the back of the check.

oh.

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

He sure did 'put the situation into context'

The situation is that cops are out-of-control, and cannot be trusted all over the country, and that their superiors (like this chief Fart Acevado) will only take it as a joke, when forced to acknowledge the situation at all.

Good news is more and more people around the country are beginning to realize that cops are the enemy. That paying and equipping low IQ kids with barely a high school education and quasi-military training, and giving them legal immunity over any situation is probably not the best way to 'protect & serve' the community, keep the peace, or uphold the laws.

There is a reason our Founders made the 2nd Amendment explicitly clear and said that "A well regulated MILITIA..." is "...NECESSARY to the SECURITY of a FREE state..."

They were mandating specifically how we as American citizens are to protect our communities, states, and country, and how to enforce the laws. With citizens' militias, not the British Royal system of Constables On Patrol (C.O.P.s).

When this nation is turned around again by the patriots who will not take this corruption and criminality within all levels and ranks of government, one of the solutions will be to implement citizens' militias as per the founders' vision, and outlaw corporatist police departments.

The title is misleading
