Glenn Greenwald lauds bravery of RT’s Abby Martin, then NY Times outs her as 9/11 Truther

Let’s follow the bouncing ball on this one as it takes some unpredictable rebounds.

On Friday, PandoDaily’s Mark Ames revealed that Pierre Omidyar, the billionaire funding Glenn Greenwald’s new journalistic effort, First Look, had helped fund efforts to bolster the opposition groups in Ukraine responsible for ousting President Viktor Yanukovych. Ames wondered about Greenwald and documentarian Laura Poitras, two people with access to the full cache of Snowden documents, working for a billionaire who was using his money to affect global politics.

On Saturday, Greenwald fired back, ridiculing Ames for suggesting that Greenwald wouldn’t act completely independently as a journalist, regardless of who was writing his paychecks. In fact, he said, he didn’t even particularly care about Omidyar’s political activities: “Prior to creating The Intercept with Laura Poitras and Jeremy Scahill, I did not research Omidyar’s political views or donations.”

At a superficial level, Abby Martin’s outburst seems admirable. She is a journalist who is not afraid to express her opinions, even if they are in opposition to those of RT management. The Glenn Greenwalds of the world are quick to hold her up as an admirable example of journalistic independence.

The NY Times, however, soberly points out the pitfall of this position. Martin is a 9/11 truther – should she therefore have the right to express those crackpot views as well? Free speech extremists would say yes, but journalists must also report responsibly. The credibility of a journalistic institution can easily be destroyed if their correspondents start using their broadcast platform to disseminate their own hare brained theories. The lone cowboy vigilante reporter is an appealing figure, but adults recognize it as a myth.

At established news outlets, senior editors consult with experts and national security officials. They then adopt editorial positions which reflect reality and ensure their staff understand and present the issues in a balanced light. Martin’s problem was simply that she worked for an institution whose goals are to advance Russia’s national interests.

Organizations such as RT have ulterior motives, but journalistic independence is not the answer. Nor can the government mandate that certain organizations simply be barred from reporting, due to the pesky First Amendment. However, the bill currently being drafted by the NSA, which will shortly be presented to Congress, will solve these issues. The NSA has unrivalled information gathering capabilities; this information is then analyzed by the world’s top experts; the President himself then chooses the course of action which best represents US national interests. So the bill will ensure that reporters simply be held accountable for what they write or broadcast. In other words, disseminating any information which undermines US national security would be criminalized. This would not affect free speech – only the action of undermining national security is being restricted. Nor would it affect responsible reporters at outlets such as The Washington Post or the New York Times. But it would mean that the US could no longer be held hostage by any reporter with an agenda.

There is always a push-pull between reporters and editors

Reporters never have complete editorial freedom, because nobody should EVER provide a control-free environment for anybody with a pen and an imagination. Otherwise what you end up with is the Ron Paul newsletters...

On the other hand, editors can't do it all themselves. Reporters provide editors with the raw information from which editorial decisions are made, so reporters have a lot of power to influence what eventually gets disseminated.

He who pays the fiddler calls the tune. Glen Greenwald...take notice.

Abby Martin (like Glenn Greenwald) is a socialist. But I suppose we need to form strategic issue based alliances with people like these. (How Ron Paul formed alliance with Bernie Sanders & Alan Grayson over Audit the Fed.)

Abby Martin banned me from her Facebook page, after she posted video praising Seattle's socialist Kshama Sawant.

I was horrified & criticized socialism. I posed her a challenge to host debate between 2 Seattleites of Indian origin: Kshama Sawant & our own Vijay Boyapati. Abby couldn't take my criticism, proceeded to delete all my comments on her post & outright banned me from her page. Oh well. I notice she has kept up with her Kshama Sawant Socialism worship of late.

Immoral funding of Military Industrial Complex by Federal Reserve and US taxation system must stop!!!! End illegal/unconstitutional wars! Preserve US currency!

some socialist

who considers ben swann a hero.

people are never one thing. she also supported ron paul.

Half story

Abby Martin has clearly stated that the only reason she supported Ron Paul was common interests against Military Industrial Complex, bank bailouts, erosion of civil liberties (NDAA, Patriot Act, NSA...) etc. She also has lot of alliance with us on corporate Monsanto-GMO corruption, poisoning of tap water with Hexafluorosilicic acid etc issues. But she has always hated and distrusted free market theories, Second Amendment and is a shill for increasted taxation, social welfare state, minimum wage mandates, medicare, socialized medical plans and on and on and on. She has attempted discussing Federal Reserve in the past, but her understanding of monetary policy is very weak with solutions supported by big government.

Abby Martin We already incorporate aspects of socialism here in the and all across Europe. Stop fear mongering that simply entertaining socialist ideals into a political system equates to genocide all that does is make you look ridiculous

Abby is in the same socialist camp as Dennis Kucinich, Alan Grayson, Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibi, Noam Chomsky, Laura Poitras, Jeremy Scahill, Amy Goodman etc. I'm ALL for alliance with these leftist socialists when it comes to exposing evil corrupt foreign policy, banker bailouts, civil liberties being destroyed etc. Past that point, their solutions are all big government, ALL the time.

Ben Swann praise you cited is a no-brainer. They both have communicated many times & have common-ground being in alternative media talking against illegal wars, NSA, banker bailouts, all sorts of common topics.

However: Abby has also stated that she REGRETTED voting for Ron Paul in 2008, since she figured out he was never serious running for election & only doing it as a free-market education campaign. She felt extremely queasy about free market philosophy, and decided NOT to support Ron Paul 2012, presuming it was a Koch Brother like co-opted movement. She stated all such things in a Joe Rogan podcast interview while back. I'll cite source after I can locate it. Regardless, her shilling worship of Kshama Sawant cited clearly so far itself is enough incriminating material.

nobody is perfect

the liberty movement would be smart to applaud and work with her and others on the issues that are agreed on. look at ron paul and his work and alliances with kucinich, frank and ralph nader. he has had both greenwald and scahill on his show. abby is a 9/11 truther (big plus) and pro snowden, and anti empire/war. besides she is not hard to look at :-)

If she's a 9/11 truther that only makes her more awesome

Off topic but...

I think the current situation bodes well for Russia's motivation to continue to shelter Edward Snowden.

Abby Martin

Referred to us as gun nuts.....

Ron brought the Liberty movement together, Rand is expanding the crap out of it! :)

that's the thing about opinions...

everybody's got one.
I still respect her for speaking her own mind.. agree/disagree.

I often wonder about whole

Snowden story. I think the cat was out the bag for most governments around the world realizing the capabilities to suck data out of the internet. Hell even South Africa (not verified though) sold snooping equipment to Gaddafi so he could listen in on his own people.

This was basically revealed to the public, but don't think it was no big deal to governments around the world.

After 13 years of lying about September 11, 2001, Wow.

Instruction to jury. A witness that lies is not credible.

After 13 years of lying about September 11, 2001 why consider NYT credible.
