Time OpEd: Sen. Rand Paul: U.S. Must Take Strong Action Against Putin’s Aggression

By Rand Paul | Time Magazine | March 9, 2014

Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is a gross violation of that nation’s sovereignty and an affront to the international community. His continuing occupation of Ukraine is completely unacceptable and Russia’s President should be isolated for his actions.

It is America’s duty to condemn these actions in no uncertain terms. It is our role as a global leader to be the strongest nation in opposing Russia’s latest aggression.

Putin must be punished for violating the Budapest Memorandum, and Russia must learn that the U.S. will isolate it if it insists on acting like a rogue nation.

PUTIN is not who the Press has painted him as---

In fact, the Oligarchs literally HATE PUTIN---I will tell you why. Forgive me, but I re-posted some of this from the Reagan post. I found a great book that Lew Rockwell's site recommended, "Russian Populism", and it's about President Putin and his fight against the Oligarchs. Russia has no fascism with big corporations anymore. Did you know that?

The Oligarchs HATE PUTIN---why?---because he refused to allow NGO's into his country which do nothing but hire brainwashed, self-aggrandizing, self-seeking, self-promoting intellectuals for money (not too smart though to "question" or "criticize" the oligarchs), and because he does not support the EU & US meddling. These NGO's have tenticles in many societies, except Russia & China and a few others like Argentina. You always wondered just HOW the Oligarchs did it. That's how. They put groups of these organizations, many of them into countries, to upset the balance, and to destroy the countrie's "unity" & whatever bound them together.

This "unity" was their enemy. You see, if they could only have the power over a country, if that unity was upset and destroyed, leaving a lot of bickering and feuding between factions. So, that's what the oligarchs did. In fact, they have an "Independent Russia Task Force" of the CFR. I have the list of people on it, if you want it.

The NGO's were organized by the Rich & Powerful Oligarchs, and we all know who they are--the ones who are the Ruling Elite over the Bilderberg Group---and again, these NGO's were set up to brainwash and to upset the cultural values of a country---to divide and conquer, so to speak---that's why they allowed so many "other" different cultures & religions to immigrate into America since the 60's & 70's. It has worked unfortunately, and now we have much division, and no cohesive religious morals pulling us all together like we used to. Religions are turning increasingly more pagan, as a result.

Rand Paul is a NEOCON in sheep's clothing, and I won't ever vote for him or support him financially. RON PAUL is more of a nationalist, and he would have put the country and our values first, IF HE COULD HAVE BEEN PRESIDENT in the 70's. We know about the gold standard. He wouldn't have let that go away. Russia has gotten out of debt, unlike America.

There comes a time (like Putin realized) when the "State", IF LED BY SOMEONE WHO GOES AGAINST THE OLIGARCHS, can unite his country. As things turn around like in Putin's case, Russia needs the "state" less. Just think of it. Putin has enjoyed INCREDIBLE HIGH POPULAR SUPPORT & RATINGS for 10 years. That's because he made the state building project nothing other than a means to "correct the rigged privatization". I'm not for one ruler alone, but I'll tell you that if I did, I'd pick RON PAUL to get us out of this mess we are in. Then, we could talk about what kind of government would work best. However, Putin still has to get approval like he recently did from his "Congress" for putting the Russian troups in Ukraine.

The US has literally destroyed all remnants of our patriotic ideals with the trashing of the Constitution and our cultural moral values, and I am sickened by all this. Putin united Russians through their sense of patriotism, their religion, and their cultural values. It was SO SELF-EVIDENT in the opening & closing ceremonies at the Olympics.

The "West" made plenty of predictions about Putin, but literally NONE turned out. He has been a big success. And, one other reason was his determination & goal of getting Russia OUT OF DEBT---you heard me right!

So, these are just a few thoughts I've had based on what I've read about the REAL Putin. He's not perfect, but I'll tell you his ratings are 75-80%, and they've been that way for years!

RAND PAUL-----is ignorant about Putin & knows nothing about him & Russia----and THAT alone is a crying shame. He just strikes me as an opportunist, a competitor of his father's success, and someone who speaks with a crooked tongue. But, I do believe that President Reagan would have gotten along with Putin and have respected how Putin was able to change his country around economically. JMHO.

"sanctions are an act of war"

how often have we heard Ron say this??

i understand rand is working on his image and playing to republican constituents, but i much rather he just speak the truth. lets have a real choice. why use the little bully pulpit he has to appease Washington elite? i mean there is so much illogical rhetorical nonsense in this op-ed. russia is violating ukraine's sovereignty? what about the west working to overthrow the elected govt in ukraine? what about the sovereignty of crimea? good grief! this is making me root for jesse ventura!

Style v. Substance

Style---The Republican press is currently pushing the narrative that Obama and the Dems are "soft on Putin," yet there's no substantive difference between the positions of Obama and the Republican hawks (e.g. McCain). This media narrative is not about Ukraine, it is about domestic politics. It is about the war party trying to reassert itself, exploiting the Ukraine crisis to revive the mindless rah-rah nationalism that supports their foreign policy generally. And the real target is not the Dems, but those Republicans who oppose the war party: especially Rand Paul. So how does Rand deal with this problem? He needs to appear "tough on Putin." And that's the purpose of this op-ed.

Substance---Beyond the rhetoric, what is Rand actually proposing that the US do vis a vis Ukraine and Russia? In his own words:

"This does not and should not require military action."

---Good, no war

"We should also suspend American loans and aid to Ukraine"

---Good, less foreign aid

"I would immediately remove every obstacle or current ban blocking the export of American oil and gas to Europe, and I would lift restrictions on new oil and gas development in order to ensure a steady energy supply at home and so we can supply Europe with oil if it is interrupted from Ukraine."

---Good, free the energy market

"The U.S. should suspend its participation in this summer’s G-8 summit and take the lead in boycotting the event in Sochi. If Putin’s troops remain in Crimea at the time of the summit, Russia should be expelled from the group."

---Good, get out of these international organizations

"I would reinstitute the missile-defense shields President Obama abandoned in 2009 in Poland and the Czech Republic, only this time, I would make sure the Europeans pay for it."

---Good, let the Europeans defend themselves

"Economic sanctions and visa bans should be imposed and enforced without delay."

---Here's the only potentially objectionable proposal: economic sanctions (though we don't know what specifically Rand has in mind). Most likely, any economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the US would be symbolic. There isn't that much trade between the US and Russia to begin with, and the EU and China (Russia's most important trading partners) are not going to play along with any sanctions, beyond some tokens to appease Washington. So, yes, economic sanctions are bad, but I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch over it in this case.

CONCLUSION --- This was an excellent op-ed. Rand managed to appear tough through clever use of rhetoric, while the actual substance of his proposal is extremity non-interventionist. Boom! That's why he'll be the next President of the United States.

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

Let's see where to start....

1. Anyone who thinks that the militarization of outer-space, a.k.a. "missile defense", is some sort of route to our physical safety does not know either the history of mankind or technology very well.

Such systems can never be 100% (and are typically have a 0% effective rate), and so there is no security here. Furthermore, decoys can always be made to fowl any such system. The only true missile defense is missile disarmament - like what Mikhale Gorbechev did in the 1980s, and John Kennedy tried to do in 1963. You can't profit from disarmament though, which is why the War Establishment always goes in the opposite direction. Are we to have inspiring and positive leadership like Gorbechev and Kennedy? It looks like Rand Paul is saying.....not.

2. Sanctions may appear "tough on Putin", but of course they never accomplish any political change (example: Cuba, Iraq, etc.), and instead they always hurt and cause suffering to innocent children, women, men that have nothing to do with government actions. Even worse they hurt our own economy, trade status, and our own people -- so this is not an act of "toughness" at all, but yet another act of self-inflicted pain and international hostility. Sanctions are also considered an act of war, so once committed ... you know what this always eventually leads to (we had sanctions on Iraq).

When Kennedy faced neighboring Missiles in Cuba, he refused both War and Sanctions. Instead he bought time with a blockade, and negotiated a mutal disarmament arrangement with Russia. Will we ever see leadership like that again? Funny, how we always do far more severe and violent things today, over things that are clearly much less threatening.

3. Visa Bans, in this case probably don't hurt us (who wants to travel to the Ukraine?), but once again this accomplishes nothing and is just another case of an unnecessary self-inflicted restriction of our own freedom.

4. Ronald Reagan had a horrible foreign policy (no role model).

As long as any leader continues to play the same unnecessary game of equating self-injury and hostile escalations as being "tough", we will never have a Country that can ever stop the bleeding, and is finally secure enough to stop burning itself out trying to chase so-called 'monsters' overseas.

...for logic.

Thanks for taking the time to explain politics to the naive child-like absolutists.

LOL ...

You are right the EU does not want sanctions ... LOL

You Have "Nailed It"

...in a brief concise assessment of the real story.

It's 3-D Chess within the political framework, and media "narrative".

I am weeping

with joy that others see the light :-)

What confuses me is why can't others on the Daily Paul understand.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

Because they have their "I

Because they have their "I hate Rand" blinders on.

Under the Guise of "Sanctions"

...Rand has taken the position to "sanction"....

In reality these "sanctions" are a withdrawal of BILLIONS "offered" to Ukraine by the US-NATO-NWO-GLOBALIST-EMPIRE.

These BILLIONS are "derived" from DEBT imposed upon AMERICAN CITIZENS.
*DEBT that will be OWED to China.
*Wealth that will be "confiscated" by Russia as "payback" for the interjection of US-inspired "dissidents" whose utilization is a direct violation of the BUDAPEST MEMORANDUM.
*MONIES that are "NOT THEIRS TO GIVE", IOW more debt upon the US taxpayer.
So......Follow the money......Rand surely has.
Those BILLIONS were just a "carrot-on-a-stick" to compel UKRAINE's complicity and association with the US-NATO-UN-WAR MACHINE-NWO.
A violation of the BUDAPEST MEMORANDUM, on our part.
So...Rand is essentially acting Constitutionally within a limited framework....of REALITY.

"Beyond the blackened skyline, beyond the smoky rain, dreams never turned to ashes up until.........

That was a well written rant. Enjoyed that.

All within my first cup

...of coffee...boy, do I need another cup of joe.

Good to see ya here...good morning.
I've been absent for a few days "digesting" the "facts" and felt it was time to start swingin' away.

Truth is the power of a line-drive-home-run.
We are overrun with psudeo-libertarian-anarchists, much of the same characters as were present "within" the Ukraine riots.
And it's all happening here.

Congrats on your wedding...hope you are enjoying the honeymoon phase.

"Beyond the blackened skyline, beyond the smoky rain, dreams never turned to ashes up until.........

I'm working on my twelth cup

according to the manufactor's markings on the pot.. I've had a thing for cuban style coffee since the 70s.. Cafe Beustello 12 cup Italian Stovetop espesso pot. Makes two American sized cups of robust coffee. GOOD to see you too!

I've got to start swinging the weed dragon away to burn the gravel so I have gravel and not a lawn where there is supposed to be gravel.

It's all a learning opportunity. Studying Israel gave me a global reality check. All this Israel bashing is "Entertainment", people don't know what Palestine is.. they don't understand that Islam makes refugeees and millions of people live in refugee camps, like in Palestine.. people are supporting palestine and the last place you want to live is in palestine, and it has little to do with Israel except unlike the neighboring countries whence the refugees came, Israel is producing.. Israel has jobs, Israel HAS what Palestinians want, but Jordan isn't going to give it to them.. Egypt isn't going to give it to them.. so the demand is from the UN Israel give it to them.. and for what?

Because the world has grown very small, and the globalists with the UN Agenda have their bets on the table.. heads, Islam rules a world of ruins; or tails, Communism enslaves the industrial global population that remains after generations of population purges (they learned that you can not dispose of too many bodies in a single place for too long, the area becomes a wretched stench whether you burn, bury or bomb them, it's expensive and a lot of work).

Israel was established by people who said "Never again", and doing the exact opposite of the rest of the world, which they have to constantly defend themselves physically and ethically.

Thank you for the congratulations (((((Danton)))))

Me too :-)

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

The only thing I would change is NWO.. we were all born into the NWO, what's happening now is the UN Agenda because of all these treaties that we've signed, why the Patriot Act trumps the constitution.. climate change. Know what gets me about climate change.. they never figure in war, and the climate isn't just about the environment, but social climate. I would love to see the UN challenged for neglecting war affects from their climate change agenda.

it all comes down to us, and educating others. People are typically good, but have come to rely on others to provide solutions that they can fix on their own.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

I think it comes down to us educating ourselves, being open about our perspectives, and striving to materialize viable solutions.

I came up with a design for the headlands here.. I'm trying to figure out how to take a map of the area and then scale the buildings, that already exist.. like photo shop.. I never did photoshop.. man.. it's got me stumped.. oh well.. 9 am time to burn. ((((PAF))))

Thanks, One Good Turn...

check out this NY Times article on Victoria (fuck EU) Nuland, aka Victoria Noodleman's father, who recently died.

It gives you another point of perspective into her "influences".

Thank you for the article.

"Dr. Nuland regarded him with fear and shame, emotions that would take a deep psychological toll."

...he wrote, “what is to be salvaged of our hope for the final memories we leave to those who love us? The dignity we seek in dying must be found in the dignity with which we have lived our lives.”

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

What a hypocrite!

Has he ever heard the phrase "Clean up your own yard before b*tching about your neighbors"? What are we doing throughout the whole world?

And besides that, he will b*tch about Russia while in the same breath keep slobb gobblin Israel and give them all the money they want while they take over Palestine!

NOT Hypocritical..

...but working within a limited framework of the reality of the situation.
See my above comments...they will clear up any misconceptions being foisted upon the public.
Rand is playing it smartly within this limited political framework.
This may quell some of the rand-hate that is blinding many.

It's all about the money.
One BIG chess game.

Rand Paul sure isn't any Ron

Rand Paul sure isn't any Ron Paul. He clearly believes we should be a global cop. Unfortunately this is precisely what makes him much more acceptable to mainstream Republicans than his dad.

Fracking the Ukraine...

Even THIS is a ploy.
Yes, there are 2 huge reserves in Ukraine ripe for the picking.
even FULLY developed, they would/could supply all of Europe's needs for:
(wait for it)
3-4 years.
This is not EVEN about plundering the Ukraine (which Chevron is ALREADY under contract for $10 Billion w/ the OLD regime... that's right Yanukovich had signed the agreement BEFORE being ousted).
and encircling Russia.
It's about the American/Global empire taking on the impediments to absolute dominance over the planet and its people.
Ukraine is simply an appetizer.

How can

people on this site even remotely except this as 'playing politics', when Dr Paul's Texas Straight Talk, staunchly destroys Rand's selling the globalist agenda on Ukraine? Rand just totally dismisses the facts stated by Ron 'So what happened in Ukraine? The US government and media claims that the US must save Ukrainian democracy from an invading Russian army that is threatening the country’s sovereignty. But in reality the crisis was instigated in part by US meddling. Remember the intercepted telephone call in which two senior Obama Administration officials discussed plans to replace the elected government in Ukraine with US puppets? That is exactly what happened. Is that not a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty? Is that what democracy is all about?'

Rand's name could also be inserted for Obama's in his next statement 'The Obama Administration’s policy toward Ukraine is hypocritical. The overthrow of the government in Kiev by violent street protests was called a triumph of democracy, but when the elected parliament in autonomous Crimea voted last week to hold a referendum to decide its future, President Obama condemned it as a violation of international law. What about the principle of self-determination, which is also enshrined in international law?'

Ron then goes on to state 'Congress next week will likely vote for sanctions against Russia. Though many mistakenly believe that sanctions are a relatively harmless way of forcing foreign countries to do what we say, we should be clear: sanctions are an act of war.

Cooler heads in the United States are not currently prevailing. There is a danger of an unimaginable conflict between the US and Russia. We must demand a shift away from a war footing, away from incendiary rhetoric. We are broke and cannot afford to “buy” Ukraine. We certainly cannot afford another war, especially with Russia!'

I warned Rand supporters that Ron would soon have to come out against Rand's foreign policy position, indirectly at the moment, but he will soon be forced to do so directly. Rand even made reference to misdirection propagandists GHW Bush and Kissinger on Fox News Sunday, two of the formenters of the neo-communist foreign policy agenda (these people follow Trotsky the communist and have nothing to do with consevatism). Rand, not only is being dishonest, he is making a huge political mistake, probably being pushed by Benson. He is focused too much on pleasing the evangelicals, and the establisment GOP, when he will need to have independents in order to win the nomination and the general election. Don't fall for the media and other politician tactics of calling Rand an isolationist, this is being done to divide supporters, and hopefully keep him from calling out the fraud being presented in the Ukraine against the Russians.

Micael Rozeff tells like it is:
