Socialist: City of Seattle Should Take Over Taxi Business

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle city councilmember Kshama Sawant advocates a bold idea for ending the dispute between taxi companies and rideshare businesses - she says the city should take over the taxi business.

Taxi drivers feel they’ll be crushed by competiton, despite the limits on rideshare companies that city council members voted to approve last night.

Because rideshare companies use high-tech service to lure customers away from taxis, councilmember Sawant says the city should step in.

“The real solution to this problem is for the city to have the app, the smartphone app and the dispatch system and to employ taxi drivers as unionized living wage workers,” Sawant told KIRO-7’s Natasha Chen.

The idea is not a surprise coming from Councilmember Sawant, who was elected as a Socialist.

As if Sawant hasn't learned

As if Sawant hasn't learned from the mistakes the socialist government of India have made that left the country impoverished.

A universally shared human capability

To choose to live by deception and fraud is indeed a universallly shared human capability.

Thank you Seattle "/" India, for the refresher.

She's the only honest elected official in Washington State.

Or possibly in all of government in the USA.

She ran as a SOCIALIST - which is what she is.

Meanwhile, the rest of the rats in the republican and democrat parties claim to believe in the Constitution of the USA and in freedom and the free market system.

But they're liars, thieves and hyppocrites.

Sure, Kshama Sawant is a THIEF to be sure. All Socialists are thieves.

But at least we KNOW she's a thief because she RAN as a thief in her campaign for city council.

In ohter words, the devil you KNOW is less dangerous than the devil you don't.

She provides another reason for abolishing the caste system.

Too much inbreeding. She's crazy.

For the love of ....

YOU DON'T LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD! You innovate or you die; period. That is how capialism works and that is how it should be. Innovate or die; if you can't compete based on a better product then get the hell out of the way.

Could you imagine where we'd be right now if the government had stepped in to level the ISP playing field so that dial-up businesses could survive?

Send her back to India ASAP

Send her back to India ASAP

Oh so she really is openly socialist!

Not sure how someone can advocate for "Constitutional Rights" AND socialism in the same speech, but she apparently doesn't have a problem with it!

And she's an economics teacher too!

Wonder what she thinks about that?

"Break the power of Wall Street and Corporate America! Take the giant corporations that dominate Washington state such as Boeing, Microsoft, and Amazon, into democratic public ownership to be run for public good, not private profit."

Not your brother

Go back to hell socialist scum.
Every socialist is a wanna be dictator.

Interesting. So they can make room for competition

or Seattle might impose NO COMPETITION along with NO OWNERSHIP for...anyone. No profits, just a paycheck. No investment, just fill out this employment application. You had a business, you wouldn't complete and now you have a job...

I dunno. Just might work. Maybe they'll understand that all they have to do to compete is improve. If not, if free enterprise isn't allowed to raise the bar, the public will be getting exactly what it deserves.

Most of those who think so actually don't and most of those who think sew actually rip.

Don't know which is worse...

...The City actually owning the Taxi's, or just enforcing everything the "private" company's tell them to by shutting down their competition.

Obviously both are horrible, but I can't say there's much difference.
Seattle mostly sucks not matter which way you slice it.

Isn't this the same idea that

Isn't this the same idea that new york has? I know the companies are "private" but it's essentially government ran and regulated. 750k for a medallion so I hear. I'm sure they won't pass the cost on too.

That's right, the government already regulates the Taxi biz...

...so much, that it's already a Mafia run corporatist industry, just like the carting business.

Basically, the Mafia, who have long since owned the Cab companies, have now long since owned the city politicians (at least in the northeast, like CT, NY, RI) and they make sure it's nearly impossible for anyone else to get in the business, unless they pay a hefty troll-toll.

So it's hardly a free-market system now. I tried to start a Cab company. Not happening unless I have all kinds of capital. Should be as easy as slapping a sign on your car, and putting some ads out. Not in this corporatist economy run by a criminal socialist government.

There's hardly a difference between what Seattle is proposing, and what Seattle already has, if it's anything like NYC or CT.
The difference would be the elitist, corporatist, Mafia owners would just be finalizing the monopoly they've already created.

I'm not sure what you want to

I'm not sure what you want to hear but I have often felt for decades that the taxi service in "Toronto" where I was raised and lived for most of my adult life was so disgusting that I often mused how it would be better for tourists and residents if the City took it over with properly kept cabs and more publicly acceptable drivers. Seats held together with duct tape, broken springs in the seats themselves, drivers who could not understand or be understood with whatever native dialect they were speaking in, radio distraction on foreign language stations, driving cars like they were trucks...did not promote confidence in the public taxi service. Getting a taxi to the airport was dominated by a particular culture who somehow cornered the monopoly on taxi service to/from airports. I always admired the specific London cabs with their chauffeur driven clean taxis...I don't think they are that way any more. Travelling by public transit or cab in Toronto has long become a stresser for me. I no longer have to live in Toronto ...so goodbye dirty cabs, buses, subways. Sorry about the long harangue but a button pusher for me!

Here's an anecdote of a Vancouverite

Here's an anecdote of a Vancouverite of not atypical Canadian political views discovering how his city has attempted to dupe him into accepting bad taxi service as normal.

From what I can tell, it would be particularly frustrating to be a poor person in Vancouver or an unconnected entrepreneur with so many decks stacked against the customers and innovators. Of course, the socialists would be fine with that if they can claim to have a plan to alleviate the problems they (and whichever statists are their political rivals in choosing which deck to stack next) cause.
