Chilean authorities have requested the "preventive evacuation" of the country's northern coastline, the country's ONEMI emergency office said on its website, following the earthquake near the mining area of Iquique.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said its readings indicated that a tsunami had been generated, and it has warned of possible destruction along coasts near the site of the quake. The centre said the tsunami wave activity measured between 5.6-6.3 ft (1.7-1.9m).

"It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts. Authorities should take appropriate action in response to this possibility," said the Center.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 has struck off the coast of Chile, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was issued following the quake, which was centered 49 miles west-northwest of Iquique, Chile, and was 6.21 miles deep, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a 6-foot tsunami that hit Pisagua, Chile, at 8:04 p.m. ET. No damage assessment has been made at this time.

ABC News producer Helen Hughes in Santiago, Chile, said there is a tsunami alert for all of Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Evacuation orders have been issued for the cities of Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta. All cities are along a low coast, and each has a significant climb to higher land further inland, Hughes said.

A powerful earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck off northern Chile Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country's entire Pacific coast and much of Latin America.

Chilean officials say two people died when the earthquake struck at 8.46pm local time and several others are seriously injured. While it appears the area escaped major damage and casualties, landslides blocked roads, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire.

About 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in the city of Iquique, and officials said Chile's military was sending a planeload of special forces to guard against looting.

We're doing just fine.

We didn't feel a thing down here in Valparaiso. Thanks for all your thoughts! I'd still prefer earthquakes over a collapsing welfare state, any day of the week.

Glad To Hear Your In Good Spirits

The U.S. Geological SURVEYinitially reported the quake at 8.0, but later upgraded the magnitude. It said the quake struck 61 miles (99 kilometers) northwest of the Chilean city of Iquique at 8:46 p.m., hitting a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.

The quake was so strong that the shaking experienced in Bolivia's capital about 290 miles (470 kilometers) away was the equivalent of a 4.5-magnitude tremor, authorities there said.

At least eight strong aftershocks followed in the first few hours, including a 6.2 tremor. More aftershocks and even a larger quake could not be ruled out, said seismologist Mario Pardo at the University of Chile.

Some roads in northern Chile were blocked by landslides, causing traffic jams among people leaving the coast.
