Forbes: Great Article About the GOP Rule Change Against Ron Paul

There’s an unspoken storm brewing in the Republican Party—a storm whose seeds were planted in the first days of the 2012 Republican National Convention.

For those who may not recall those late August days in 2012, the Republican Party arrived in Tampa dedicated to creating a seamless launch for the national presidential campaign of its standard bearer, Governor Mitt Romney, and to do all it could to insure at least the appearance of a united party as it moved toward the November election.

To make that happen, Chairman Reince Priebus—along with a number of national committee members on the Mitt Romney bandwagon—made the determination that anyone or anything associated with libertarian Ron Paul was bad news for the GOP’s chances and, as such, were to be avoided at all costs.

To meet that goal, Paul was denied an opportunity to speak at the convention unless he promised to allow the RNC to edit his speech.

But that wasn’t all. An additional condition for obtaining some recognition at the convention for Paul and his followers required that Dr. Paul be willing to publicly endorse the candidacy of Gov. Romney.

These were conditions the Texas Republican was unwilling to accept, preferring to simply see his name left out of nomination.

GOP Rule Changes: My comment over at Forbes

There was so much cheating in Washington State you should be ashamed of yourself Apollo. There was not much enthusiasm for Romney at all except by the OGREs. But you are right about the final count of Paul delegates after all the wheeling and dealing-grass roots be damned. Due to the treatment of the Paul delegates at the convention by their fellow delegates and the shenanigans of the Rules Committee, and the scripted outcome there is such a backlash going on in the state the WSRP has a big surprise coming, especially in King County-where in defiance of state statue the grassroots elected precinct committee officers are not even allowed to elect their own legislative district chairmen. By law, and the national party should learn this, the power rests in the grassroots elected central committee of each county, and when you mistreat the grassroots and deny and cheat them out of their power it will eventually catch up with them.

;-)))

This Party is a POS!
40 year straight ticket Republicann Voter!
Woke up because of Dr. Paul!!!
Will never NEVER vote for these things again.
Only if these POS are out of the GOP .!!Reince Priebus!!

Wisdom Strategies

The thing I personally remain

The thing I personally remain most curious about is what exactly was said between Ron and Ben Bernanke in their semi-secret meeting that then led to a series of very strange decisions by Ron.

Many scenarios have run through my mind

since that day. In a way, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who remains very curious about that fateful day. My latest theory, right or wrong, makes me believe we had an even greater impact than we know and, perhaps, Rand was the compromise. Compromise being the operative word. He (Rand) would have to compromise on a few things important, or should I say "vital" to their interests to be in the running this time around. I do have a good imagination, so don't take that as truth. Just the latest speculative guess.

“It is the food which you furnish to your mind that determines the whole character of your life.”
―Emmet Fox

or they will use him to keep the libertarian Republicans...

in check and within the party and offer him a VP position. Then when Rand's time comes to run for president, they'll have him blackmailed into control or dump him.

The sad truth to all of this is the fact that...

some believe they can still work with the establishment in power to change the Republican party. That somehow this last minute rule change was some one-time fluke that will never happen again if enough people will vote them out.

Whenever the establishment feels threatened, they will change as many rules as necessary to prevent their power from being stripped.

Like marriage and business, sometimes you have to part ways to bring real change.

Okay Granger, tell me how I'm wrong.

Having to cheat to win.

Just oozing with integrity (NOT!).

Setting a good example is a far better way to spread ideals than through force of arms. Ron Paul

The Author's Logic is Flawed

The party establishment will cheat in enough states to ensure their preferred candidate meets the threshold and Rand Paul does not. This will not backfire. The author should have focused more on the fact that the party changed the requirements for being nominated from the floor in the middle of the convention, after Ron Paul had already passed that threshold. That's the real story--making the rules up as they go to ensure their guy won. Why wouldn't they do the same thing in 2016? They're already emboldended, having gotten away with it in 2012. The real story is how as a Republican rank-and-file member, your vote means absolutely nothing and you're only allowed it so you'll keep donating money.

I was about to make this point

He says they are 'stuck' with the rules for 2016 because they can't be changed until the convention. Well that clearly didn't stop them in 2012. Why does he think cheating poses a problem for cheaters?

They didn't cheat

it was majority rule. Simple and dirty. Subjugating the rule of decency and fair play. Nobody will have such an advantage to press in 2016. They changed the rules to fit 2012. With such a wide field because 2012 failed, well, the rules no longer fit. Oh well ass hats. You live by majority rule, you suffer under what you wrought. Seems like Karma is going to bite the pub bosses. I love an upturned convention. Bring on chaos or a Rand landslide.

Roll up your sleeves, time to represent without an anointed candidate to distract and muck up things. Pols sure do resort to all kinds of dirty tricks to prevent we the people from fully expressing ourselves. Sort of says it all. Maybe the Pols don't take us seriously?

Why won't cheating backfire?

You said "The real story is how as a Republican rank-and-file member, your vote means absolutely nothing and you're only allowed it so you'll keep donating money."

The point is, all people aren't ignorant of what is happening and will stop supporting this with money or otherwise. Many young conservatives do not support the Romneys of the world. My guess is that if they are smart, they will attempt to appease people with someone like Cruz, who is a neocon wolf in sheep's clothing. If they aren't smart, they will just push Christie, Jeb Bush, or Paul Ryan and go down in flames.

The RNC is determined to limiting choices to Coke versus Pepsi. Until they offer a real alternative, I predict that they will continue to lose support. Unfortunately, they can probably maintain the facade of support for a long time, and once we all have the chance to get to the polling station, we will be given the Coke/Pepsi option with a ton of voter fraud to boot.

sounds about right

Yes, you want a seat at the table, give $$. The more $$ the better the seat. As to determining what will be served and by whom, that has been predetermined.

Tough times...

At the Colorado State Convention, Paul and Santorum delegates formed a coalition against Romney. The Romney camp responded by distibuting out fake "Paul/Santorum" delegate slates with the names of Romney delegates. They looked identical to the real slates, only the names of delegates were changed.

I was an alternate delegate. I got bumped up to vote as a primary delegate. After waiting around for an hour or two, they had made a "mistake". They cut off the alternate delegates from voting before my chance to vote. The alternate delegate immediately in front of me was the last. I still wonder if they had really "made a mistake", or if it was my open support of Ron Paul that they were avoiding.

Either way, there was a lot of douchebaggery to be seen at the Colorado State Convention AND the RNC in 2012. God Bless America, the land of the free...

Yes, that's right

I actually busted an old lady who was distributing those fakes. I handed the people she was taking to the real slates, then followed her back to the Romney table and watched as she handed the fakes into a 20 something boy-child, and was given the real Romney slates. You should have seen her face when I confronted her and demanded to know why she was committing vote fraud by passing out fakes. I think she peed herself a little. I'll never forget it.

P.S. I have one of those fakes in my collection right next to the real one!

Its interesting how little attention this got in the MSM

I had to laugh when I read this is in the article, "Apparently, it never occurred to the majority of the Rules Committee that there might not be a President Romney in 2016 to protect".
They should have checked out the DP where is was predicted, "They can't win without us"

Bad News,

This is bad news for the GOP, this gives the liberal media all the ammunition they need to portray the GOP as a disorganized, incoherent group filled with infighting and bickering.

Because in reality...

The GOP is not a disorganized, incoherent group filled with infighting and bickering?

I remember it well

April 2012 was the first Republican Caucus I attended.

A few months later, it managed to be the last Republican event I'll ever attend.

By the way, recall that duly elected delegates were stripped!

Specifically, the husband of a former co-worker had his delegacy "awarded" to the owner of the Kowloon Restaurant, on Route 1 northbound, in Saugus, MA.

When I learned of that, I vowed never to eat at Kowloon again, and to share my decision and the reasons for it. The wife and I drove by it today, and we discussed it, so I am recalling it here as well since it was a direct result of that April 2012 Republican Caucus.

Good article!

Thanks. There will be huge repercussions from this..but we knew that was the case when it happened.

I think this will backfire

The more the RNC tries to shove more of the same down everyone's throat, the more likely it is for them to lose support. There is a large and growing population of people extremely unhappy with the status quo. Rather than try to grow the party, the RNC just craps all over anyone who advocates for real change. I predict people will get tired of getting crapped on. I did.

Check your Assumptions

Backfire would be the proper word if (big if) the RNC actually cared about growing the party. My belief is that they could give 2 shits about that, all they care about is towing the line of the real people in charge to make sure the Merca keeps going the way it's going - toward full collapse and the total end of Freedom and back to the dark ages.

looks like it's going to bite them in the butt in 2016

The sheer hostility of the party that shall not be named

was shocking and disheartening. It was such a low. I vowed to never support the Republicans after that. Now Rand might run, TMOT is running. Maybe Ron Paul was right and his was a quest to change the party. Maybe we should embrace and be the change?
