Dallas Police Union is Asking Cop Watchers to Put Their Cameras Away Because Someone May Get Hurt

Reason: Dallas Police Union: Recording Cops ‘Creating a Major Officer Safety Issue’

The Dallas Police Department (DPD) is warning its officers about encountering citizens recording them while on duty, according to CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, which also reports:

Dallas Police Association President Ron Pinkston wants citizens to stop taping because he worries someone will get hurt. "It's creating a major officer safety issue," he said. "We don't know who it is pulling behind us. We don't know they're there to videotape, they might be part of…if that guy has has just done a kidnapping they could be part of the kidnapping. You don't know."

The warning from the DPD referenced one officer's encounter with a woman, affiliated with Cop Block, who followed him with a video camera and—gasp—refused to give him information. What information did the cop need? He ought to be at least as well versed as she is in whether recording police officers in public is legal. It is, and to the DPD's credit their warning did include the reminder that residents have that right.

These people are crazy!

Can't stop

We'll Stop Taping

When the cops stop initiating the use of force and barking orders to 'stop resisting', which are clearly meant for the camera.

Cops today deserve, by and large, to feel unsafe - they are the aggressors and the tip of the spear on the war on liberty.

'someone will get hurt'. That sounds much more like a threat than a safety warning. Why don't DPD wankers put up some safety procedures on the net like 'safe filming of cops' if they're that unsafe. One of which is not 'stand sufficiently far back that neither visual or audible evidence can be recorded in such a way as to create evidence admissible in a court of law'.

They really come across in

They really come across in the wrong way when their focus is on wanting citizens to stop taping them. What they should be requesting is that any citizens taping them do so in a way which does not jeopardize anybody's safety, including the cop's safety. They should say to "please continue recording us from a safe distance with a good view."

One troubling example might be a citizen recording who is behind or standing in a location which is vulnerable to the officer during a potentially risky encounter. Because that officer will need to keep in mind that the person recording them might actually be an accomplice who is there to try to help those who were caught, etc. The person recording will probably not be a conspirator in nearly all occasions, but it's that one time where the guy with the camera is not really there to record.

I'm all for recording the police and what they do, just make sure it is done safely and it does not cause a safety concern for the police.

The Dallas Police Association, meanwhile, insists that dashboard cameras and planned body cameras are sufficient monitoring for cops and, according to the CBS affiliate, "are asking citizens to put their cameras away."

They obviously do not understand why the citizens with cameras are recording them. It's not to monitor "for cops" as in helping the cops monitor what happened. They are there to monitor THE COPS to get evidence of criminal acts committed by cops during the course of their duty.

Live Feed

if those cameras are enough, then feed them live to the net. Why is it that only cop cameras are enough, and why are cop cameras inherently safer than citizen owned cameras? If cops aren't doing anything wrong, what's the problem? It sure ain't safety.

They say that cop cameras are

They say that cop cameras are enough because they completely misunderstand the true reason why so many citizens are recording them.

I don't think

it's encounters with real criminals like kidnappers they are doing recordings for.

I'd think it was a reasonable point to mind your positioning that you're not mistaken for an aggressor if the argument hadn't been taken in the silly direction of putting the camera away.

Defend Liberty!

Typical crap.

Something that might possibly occur in the most extreme situation being used to try and justify unjust action across the board.
